Audience 9.5 - Thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. The only thing that prevents an even higher rating is some occasional conversation around the taper, not that it ever rises to an infuriating level or anything, but it sometimes calls to your attention. I still can’t figure out the concertgoer who simply cannot focus their attention on the performance they have spent good money on seeing and hearing. Audience 8.7 - A solid recording, some flaws including tape noise that lurks in the background at all times but only really makes its presence known when music is very quiet. Middle frequencies get just a touch crowded, still it is pretty clear, this is a very good, but not great, recording. Audience 8.5 - Pretty middle of the road, not annoying or bad, but not crystal clear. Hard to hear any detail in the guitars, it’s on the bassy side, so it’s bass and Jagger, and some locomotive sound which could be Keith and Ronnie. I mean, it is clear enough, it’s not a “bad” tape at all – in fact listening closely I am tempted to say this was pulled from a video source. Band was opening for Badfinger, and this is the earlier of the two performances that day. This is one of the only extant live recordings of Big Star playing in the ‘70s that has not been officially released. Audience 8.9 - Very lively, great atmosphere! Sound is very very good, and the mix that gets to your ears includes everything happening on stage but what I really love is the sound of the drums. Fills the arena yet is pretty tight, with that slight bouncing off the walls effect that gives an almost 360 degree experience. Audience 8.6 This is a pretty common Who boot, and, well, it’s fine but to me I thought guitar was too low in the mix. It’s a rollicking good show, bass, vocals sound strong followed by Moon, and to be fair, during quieter parts Townshend’s guitar is clearer. It’s during the heavy parts where guitar loses force (it’s there, it’s not completely gone!) and probably it saves the tape deck from overloading so I’d rather it a little behind in the mix than completely distorting the tape. Mick and Keith really project, the sound is forceful, and even though you do get the rest of the band (and yes, Mick Taylor for sure), they are playing second fiddle to the Glimmer Twins. Audience 8.4 - This tape takes a song to find its sweet spot (relatively speaking), so I give full credit to the taper for having the sense to make sure he was going to get the best capture he could get. What I like about this is that it’s not a muddy mess, it is bright, it’s present, and I think a very worthwhile addition to the collection especially considering it’s from 1972 which was, arguably, one of the Stones’ best tours.
