• Audience 8.8-9.2 - All seem to be recorded with the same gear but the Marseille show seems maybe slightly upgraded due to either taper position or just better acoustics. Over all this is a highly rated set of shows for the quality of the recordings. The stage mix does vary just a bit as to who is more present, but you hear all the stuff going on as it was live-mixed for the performance (meaning I don’t think taper error caused any lack of presence of, say, synthesizer or guitar on any given performance).  The taper used the first song, and in some cases part of the second song to dial in the levels (an indication of really good gear being used) and as such you may notice a volume change, albeit relatively smooth, and once he’s dialed in it is smooth sailing. The performances are sometimes a little hesitant but do gel during instrumental segments much more. I will say this: Mick Taylor is a fantastic player, but I would not call him “progressive” and this music wants to be more prog but it is constrained and maybe that is why it did not blossom much.   • Audience 7.3 - The sound field just won’t open up no matter how much you hope it will. However, this tape holds some rewards if you hang in there, there’s enough head room to sweeten the sound with Equalizer, so it does need a little boost on the highs – the mids and lows are all there and are not super well defined nor are they too boomy or muddy. There’s some muddiness but it is not a deal breaker. This is a good historic artifact.

  • Italy Prog Fest 1972:  Volume 1,2,3 Audience 7.5 - The stuff that dreams are made of! How long I have waited for something like this to materialize. I mean, I have been listening to and collecting these bands for ages and now I get to hear a full on multi-artist concert experience by all of the era’s top artists at the zenith of the prog rock movement. How cool is that? What a set this is too! The quality of presentation equals the unquestionable importance of this as a document of an important time for rock music. Thank you to whoever recorded this, and thank you to whoever packaged the recording like this.

  • Audience 8.8 - Every now and then a tape surfaces that really gets you excited as a collector. This one is just such a tape, because for one thing not only is the quality very good, but it’s super nice on the ears. What I mean is, the timbre of the recording is very comfortable, so it’s easy to listen to the entire show there is no fatigue on the ears at all. The icing on the cake is having both opening acts in the same kind of quality, in complete form. So, what more could you ask for?   • Audience 5.0 - Low fi, but so few good recordings from the early days. The lead work is the clearest sound on this, vocals non-existent. Can appreciate the dual guitars on this even though it is low-fi.

  • St. Austell 1980 Audience 8.4 - In the pantheon of early Maiden live recordings this one is far from the worst, in fact I would say it’s worth a good listen because one thing is a grimy, muddy old tape and another is a relatively good tape that is NOT muddy but maybe does not have a wide dynamic range…and I’ll take the latter every time.

  • Audience 8.9 - This is what I consider the best audience tape from the Somewhere In Time Tour. It’s got loads of atmosphere but not at the expense of the “directness” of the PA to the mic. It’s a realistic sound, this tape replicates exactly what your ears heard coming out of the PA at this show…without artifacts to detract. Get this!

  • Audience 7.0 - Indispensable for the Iron Maiden collector. Is it perfect? No, far from it. This is one of the earliest recorded gigs that you can possibly HEAR.
  • FM Broadcast 8.8 A tape recorded off air sounding its age but surprisingly it’s actually decent enough that fans of this venerable band will rejoice at hearing such an early gig in very good quality. If you compare it to a typical FM broadcast you’ll be less ecstatic, but I tell you this: in the year 1982 there were few bands that could match the intensity and precision of Iron Maiden.   • Audience 7.0 - Kind of like the Rainbow show, it is clear and one of the other decent early shows from an audience source. Again, not much bottom end here, but you can hear all instruments clearly.
  • Audience 8.7 - So let me put it this way – the recording is not perfect, but is near perfect for someone who needs to try and understand what makes Iron Maiden special. This captures a night, just another night (in fact this was a stand of shows at the Radio City Music Hall) on a long, never ending tour for the band but they play as if it was their last show. It’s amazing how night after night, town after town, tour after tour, Iron Maiden never gives a bad performance. I love this capture even though it suffers a few bumps and bruises, because it’s in the trenches from the hardcore fans perspective, it’s as if the taper is working as hard to capture the gig as the band is in delivering it. I LOVE it, and once I started playing this, I could not stop. I think you’ll love it too.   • FM Radio Broadcast  8.9 - This is not a typical radio broadcast, it is very raw and in-your-face loud!  That makes it much more enjoyable to me. The kick drum and bass are nicely present in this mix – but are not boomy or obnoxious so this is a great way to hear instrumentation normally not very defined.
