• Audience 9.3 - Yes, it is that good – and there is, I believe, a soundboard which is the source for the pro shot video but the audience tape is used here because, quite frankly, it is better. You need the atmosphere, you need the sense of space, distance, and vibe that a well-done audience tape can produce. The dynamics are good, the sound is round and warm, lush if you will.  My only complaint would be the lack of the crisp highs, but there are highs present just a little rounded off maybe. I am nitpicking!
  • Audience 8.4 - The Roundhouse in London was not the ideal place to make a stealth recording, and this one barely wins the struggle between room and distance to present a surprising, clear picture of a very early Dire Straits show. Songs “Me And My Friends” and “Real Girl” would be dropped from the set soon after this show, so having a tape like this should be considered important to the collector. • Soundboard 9.3 - Fantastic! Now I was not familiar with this band, but I must say, it’s pretty good musically with emphasis on their white-hot lead guitarist. The songs aren’t anything super duper, and their singer isn’t sensational either, but in combination all this works together to become a little more than the individual parts. I like this guitar! I already made that point but it’s worth repeating. • Audience 8.7 and 8.8 - Both of these recordings are quite good, and most welcomed. Each feature Bob Welch, although the ’72 also has Danny Kirwan still on board (but not for much longer). You can tell he is drunk, but even with all the stuff happening on stage (some clearly audible), the band still manage to put on a good show. • Audience 7.8 – 8.5 - Why the variable rating? Because the music was excessively loud and during extreme sections of music, there is distortion right in the middle frequency. What does this mean? Well, before the re-master it meant that you could not hear what was going on except for quieter passages (which incidentally sound great, and there is a lot of it since this was a band that played complex, dynamic music) but thankfully now a lot of that has been mitigated. It is still cluttered a bit when at full volume (really gives you an idea of how loud this show must have been) but MUCH better and easier on the ears now. Is it worth it?  I would say probably yes, but I know most prog enthusiasts are also critical of audio fidelity so there’s that. For me, I still got into this one, knowing the improvement made to the tape allowed me to give it a chance and I am glad I did. • Audience 8.6 - This is just fascinating. They could have easily billed this show as “The Aerosmith Blues Band” or something because they really were all about playing gritty blues and rock. The guitar work is cleaner and very articulate, it’s quite a revelation to hear them when they were really so conscience of the music, the notes, and not the glam.  I was impressed with the sound quality too, this is a certain keeper! • Audience 8.7 - It’s getting harder and harder to find recordings such as this. For one thing, it’s something that I never heard before, either it has been hidden in someone’s shoebox or just got overlooked but either way it’s a GREAT find and sounds real good, with plenty of atmospherics without being washed out or boomy. • Audience 9.5 - This recording is special, each instrument occupies its own space and has great depth and tone, especially bass which is woody and precise. This recording showcases one really intrinsically valuable characteristic lacking in soundboards – and that is the sense of time and place, distance and depth. In order to get a good feel of a live concert, you sometimes need to have those elements and this tape has them all. • Audience 8.1 - Tape is not clear but also not muddy, it’s just typical of early 70’s gear not being able to handle freakishly loud rock bands. This recording highlights drums, guitars, and bass and vocals are in the background. That being said, the drums and guitars are pretty clear, and there’s plenty of the dueling guitar pyrotechnics on display. I don’t complain to have this show to hear, it’s clearly worth it to the collectors out there. • Audience 8.6 - A lively and loud tape, with great atmosphere, in that you get the hall acoustics without unnecessary boominess or echo, just the right amount to give you that sense of being there. That makes for a unique listening experience because this show does not sound like the next show or the one before, the playing and arrangements are going to be different but so is the venue and acoustics. • Audience 8.5 - Despite being a clean recording (probably from a master), this is captured from possibly middle of venue meaning it does sound a little distant (vocals are the giveaway). At times, it sounds like the tapers try to adjust their position and the sound gets fuller, although the music is still kind of blended together and you don’t get distinct guitar notes, even though you get the overall impact of guitar – now solos are a different thing, because those seem to soar above it all and are actually much clearer and more present in the mix. • Soundboard 8.3 - I found a lot to sink into with this very early Megadeth recording. First off, it’s better sounding than the old tape that floated around for a while, as someone took the time to re-master it and pitch correct it which makes a big difference. It’s still a little narrow and thin, but you’ll be blown away by what you are hearing, if you have even a mild interest in the formative years of Megadeth, this show is a must. • Audience 7.9/Soundboard 8.8 - A rough and tumble recording for a rough and tumble show. Quite frankly, it’s a perfect match, but obviously when the soundboard portions kick in it is a relief to the ears. The audience tape is one of the better sounding ones of the tour – we’ve all heard the dismal sounding ones and this is by far better. The video footage gives you more appreciation for the tapers efforts, because it just looks like it would have been a miracle to have produced anything remarkable in that venue. • Studio Quality 9.6 - When you look at these multi-disc sets, you have to wonder if you are just getting the same old stuff recycled over and over again…well, to be sure, there is some song duplication – no way around that. On the other hand, there’s also a lot of stuff that might be new to you, and therein lays the attraction. You have to sometimes just go for it, and in the end you end up with a more complete assemblage of materials. I found this particular set rich with alternate versions and other uncommon outtakes, and well worth the effort. • Audience 9.6 - Hallelujah! This is just sublime, you get not only a band that sounds completely in lock step with each other (and I mean where even the improvs sound fluid and effortless), but also Frank being on top of his game. His tone, his attack, his feedback, his sound on the tape it’s just a really exceptional capture and performance to elevate this tape to MUST HAVE status. The 88 tour had its share of sleepers, but this is not one of those, by all standards this has to be considered one of the best nights. • Audience 9.1 - This recording is very very clean, and there is a ton of headroom where literally you can turn the volume all the way up and still get a very clean sound. There almost needs to be more mid punch, and at times, probably in sections that have been patched with a different source, there is a noticeable increase in volume/mid band. This could also be something with the taper, I do not know. Either way this recording is pretty damn good. Frank Zappa 1988-04-29 Helsinki, Finland Jäähalli Set 1: 01. tuning 00:50 02. • Audience 8.4 - I would call this a very decent recording, with bass and guitar being pretty defined, which is great because I enjoy hearing distinctive bass notes. The drums are not as well defined, but they are there and come more to the fore during Red House. This is a highly recommended show, and he really pays homage to Hendrix at this gig. • Soundboard 9.6 - Professionally recorded for broadcast, this is a pre-FM tape source. They say this is one of the best live Kinks show ever. • Audience 8.4 - A decent old (and by old I mean it sounds…old) tape that doesn’t have extreme highs or lows but is pretty consistent and clear enough to hear everything. The highlight to any Kinks tape of this vintage is the set list, they had some of their best songs ever and were playing all of them. Later set lists rarely visited Arthur material (there were some obligatory songs played at times) but here you get a heaping helping. THE KINKS Pierce College Woodland Hills, CA.
