Milwaukee 1980 FM Broadcast 8.7 - This was broadcast, the question is, was it recorded professionally and did it sound like this when it was aired?  Probably it did not sound like this – because this is below the threshold for what is acceptable for a legitimately broadcast live performance which means it is probably an off-air tape that has suffered from degradation. That being said, it’s been re-mastered and it sounds decent enough to be included in a set which features all soundboards so that says something for it. Vancouver 1981 FM Broadcast 8.8 - This is another one of those not quite living up to radio broadcast expectations probably due to a capture off the air onto cassette tape, regardless it still sounds fine just a bit dated. A re-mastering helped considerably and that is why the show is included in this set. Dortmund 1982 Soundboard 9.1 - Sounds like a large, open air stadium and that atmosphere is preserved onto the tape. A really decent one for the collectors out there. Daytona 1984 Soundboard 9.2 - Wow, the 80’s, and the unique obsession with that (now very dated) certain drum sound that can take any song and make it “new wave” ha ha!  Thankfully it’s not the case on every song otherwise I would have said skip this show, but it’s a good, well recorded one so enjoy it. Raleigh 1985 Soundboard 9.4 - Good hard panning of the guitars so that you can distinctly hear each of them as autonomous instruments. A hard rocking sound was mixed on this evening. Audience 8.9 - One thing for certain, you can’t knock this recording for not having enough wide open and bright atmosphere!  Holy crap it’s got that in spades, at maybe at a little expense of the lower register – although the bass is present in a sort of brassy and sassy kind of way. If you want to hear that guitar detail and don’t mind that the recording favors that sort of mid band/upper high range of sound and less emphasis on deep bottom end (most people would prefer not being overloaded with bass as it tends to muddy the sound) than you will like this a lot. I did not miss having phatness in the bottom end because I cranked up my bass on the EQ and lo-and-behold there was bass! Audience 9.3 - The great thing about this performer is that his sound and style is timeless – it might as well be 1976 because after listening to his shows from the 70’s, I can’t tell much difference between then and this 1990 show. The show sounds great, it is rich and full bodied with an especially beautiful drum sound and bass is meaty without being overbearing although it sometimes shakes your speakers!

Audience 9.2 - I rate this one highly because it has a unique quality to it. First though, it’s a good recording, but interestingly it gives a clear and powerful representation to the often overlooked and seldom FELT kick drum. This instrument is kind of crucial to the sound of a heavy metal band, especially one whose primary power source is closer to the bottom end of the sound spectrum. So, a nicely defined and powerful kick drum propels this show in ways others do not. Highly recommended!

St. Austell 1980 Audience 8.4 - In the pantheon of early Maiden live recordings this one is far from the worst, in fact I would say it’s worth a good listen because one thing is a grimy, muddy old tape and another is a relatively good tape that is NOT muddy but maybe does not have a wide dynamic range…and I’ll take the latter every time.

Stockholm 1975 FM Broadcast 9.2 - Clear and bright, the only thing my ears notice that could detract is the slight overcrowding in the upper mid frequency but typically that only seems to happen when there’s furious on stage jamming (which I guess when it is this band, that is a lot), but this is minor, this is a great recording and a pleasure to listen to!

Millersville 1975 Audience 8.9 - This is a hot tape! Maybe lacks a little mid-band clarity, but this, again, is kind of being nitpicky seeing as how there’s a lot of soundboard tapes of this band (not so much from ’75 though). This show has seen very little circulation, if any at all, but it deserves to be in every collection and thankfully it is presented here alongside another great sounding show. Yes!

Pinkpop 1984 Soundboard 9.6 - Excellent, crystal clear and surely one helluva great performance make this probably a must have for fans.

Dublin 1985 Audience 8.8 - A really good and spacey recording loaded with crowd ambience, as guitars and synths float just overhead. Drums sound pretty tight here, and vocals are perhaps the most prominent next to keys. Good one!
