Private recording 8.7 - This is a cool piece of history, and the sound quality does not play that big of a role even though it is decent. It’s kind of loud, a little overloaded in spots, but just because it is raw, it doesn’t mean it ain’t great. I had this on vinyl decades ago and it was one of my favorite boots. A unique insight presented here, and I was totally absorbed hearing it as if I was invited to sit on the actual recording sessions with the engineer. (Can't Seem To) Get A Line On You [4:24] The Sotheby’s Reel are Glyn John’s working tapes when he was the Stones' studio producer during Let it Bleed through the Sticky Fingers sessions, the Stones classic rock period.  The tape reel was auctioned some years ago at the famous Sotheby's London auction house and featured some different versions of great songs. Something to point out; "Gimme Shelter" recorded here on 15th March 1969 and featuring Nicky Hopkins on piano, a version of "You Got The Silver" sung by Jagger from 16th February and an early take of “Sister Morphine” almost without piano. But remarkable is also "Loving Cup" that starts with a striking different piano intro and lasts more than 6:30 minutes. Minimal are the differences in the mix for songs like "You Gotta Move", "Dead Flowers" and "Sister Morphine" second version that all resemble the finished "Sticky Fingers" release. On the other side of the coin we have to put the many opening riffs of both "Brown Sugar" and "Bitch" that are tirelessly repeated by an engineer that rolls back and forth the tape looking for a better echo effect, it seems. When the Stones recorded "Brown Sugar" in Muscle Shoals Studios it is said that they tried the song the whole night to get it right, we can feel how they felt while listening to all these false starts. Anyway when the tracks are completed like version number 11 of "Brown Sugar", here comes an early take with Stu on piano and no sax or takes 19 and 20 of "Bitch" where you can hear Jagger ad-libbing over Keith Richards' guitar solo. Last track offered is a primitive version of "Shine A Light" called "(Can’t Seem To) Get A Line On You" that stems from Leon Russell’s session at Olympic Studios in early October 1969 with Jagger on vocals (different words) but this take was officially released in January 1994 on a Leon Russell CD.

Soundboard 9.6 - This tour was well documented with a plethora of expertly recorded board tapes. This is no exception, the quality, both in terms of sound and mix, is worthy of official release. Then there is the other measure of greatness – performance. Well, it’s Santana at their creative peak, where everything came together and they were riding the crest of a wave…which lasted a good long time. Soundboard 9.4 - Both shows exceptional quality, and performances are pretty exemplary. In fact, during the introduction to the Buffalo show a point is made regarding the last performance there at the venue that it was not their best due to an illness with a band member and that this show would be no such thing. Audience 8.8 - I can’t believe it was 32 years ago I attended, and recorded, this concert. It was my birthday present, although this actually went down one day before my b-day. It’s weird because Joe also sang “Birthday” the classic Beatles song (and it wasn’t for me although I imagined that it was ha ha!). This recording is only now being made available, and it sounds great and just how I remember it, with Joe being very animated and playing lots of numbers not normally played, and telling funny stories. It was a great night, I had a blast. Audience 8.8 - A very nice effort, sounds like the taper had pretty good gear. I hear a little bit of distortion in a very specific place in the middle band, not anything to ruin the experience but it is present and sounds like someone made an effort to clean it up in remastering. This is a worthwhile listen.
