FM Broadcast 9.3 and Audience 7.8 - The FM tape is very good but the Tokyo show is suffering from what seems to be too low recording levels meaning once you turn the volume up the tape hiss comes along with it. When you do turn it up, you at least hear the band playing and pretty much get a good idea of everything but there is some hiss to deal with. Audience 8.7 - Pretty clear and close to the main PA it sounds like. In the face guitar, very cool drum sound, thick and hard hitting with a satisfying thud giving the music a lot of body and force. Audience 9.0 - An interesting recording, it’s not a board as far as I can tell, but the vocals are panned over to one side (and they sound like they are right next to you, literally!) but the rest of the music is not hard panned. Audience 8.4 - A smooth recording, pretty stable, but does lack some punch therefore it is recommended to “season to taste”, but thankfully the pallet is there to lay on your coloring. Some minor tape hiss pervades but is kind of background, my hunch is that this tape went through some mastering process to add boost and it helps a lot. It’s a good tape and a great show! Audience 8.2 - A tape that has only recently surfaced, and had some problems that would have relegated it to the dustbin of history if it were not for some diligent and careful re-mastering. The before and after is a testament to the modern renaissance in the music collecting world. Treasure troves of music is being restored and remastered and a lot of that stuff would have been considered unlistenable once upon a time. This tape suffered from a narrow bandwidth incapable of containing drums, and a lot of the bottom end was a mess. It was excruciating to listen to in that state. This tape has been given a new lease on life, and thankfully so! FM Broadcast 9.1 (Seattle) and Audience 8.3 (Fresno) - Two very cool shows with the first one taking the cake for fidelity but the second one is a stomper. It is pretty clear with guitar being very good and loud (screaming in fact!) but not at the expense of everything else. It’s lacking maybe some lower end definition and separation of instruments during their jamming parts (might lose some of the drums in there, and keyboards are absent sometimes) but these are not going to bother you when you start listening to this gig because it’s a thriller. Audience 8.4 - A barn-burner gig and maybe one of the best of the tour (recorded, anyway) with some unbelievable jamming. The audio is decent, some mid band clutter was equalized to allow less noise and more music to permeate your space. I think that made the difference with this tape. It’s worth getting and will impress you even more than you might already have been with these guys. Always gave their best. Audience 8.1 - In the pantheon of ’69 Stones audience tapes, this one ranks as one of the more listenable ones. The recorder levels are low, so some tape hiss comes up at volume, but it is relatively clear, no murkiness (which historically is a sound killer), and you actually distinguish very well the two distinct guitars (but still sometimes can’t tell where Taylor ends and Keith begins (which is kind of what they strove for anyway). Audience 8.0 – 8.5 This is one of those “right in the thick of it” tapes. Immersed into the crowd, you become part of the experience of the concert along with the tapers themselves. Is that good or bad? In this case it starts off a little shaky and gets better, and better, as the show progresses until at the end you realize you had a great time. This music is pretty basic, but will remind you a bit of Bob Dylan, and will entertain you endlessly with the lyrical wit and story-telling nature of the songs. Audience 8.8 - I like these kinds of audience recordings where the taper is kind of close to the speakers yet the sound does not distort. It makes for a very realistic and intense sound, closer to what it would have been like in person, rather than the soundboard feed which is not representative of the sound that came out of the PA system. Also, I like the Jean-Luc Ponty period, the jazzy workouts were sometimes incredibly intense and not necessarily traditionally jazzy, but progressively jazzy. This is one such gig. Audience 8.7 - Every audience tape has a certain unique “timbre” to it, a quality hard to define – it encompasses distance from source, surrounding ambience, equalization, harmonics, and more. So, this recording is what I would call “very good” but different than other 88 Euro Zappa tapes in timbre. I find this one leaning too far in upper mid band and treble, not irritatingly, but wanted more bottom end. My ears were telling me that is what it wanted…yours may not it is all very subjective. Audience 8.8 - Back in the cassette tape trading days, many tapes would be passed around containing the Mick Taylor period and those were the ones I most gravitated towards. A lot of those shows I have never listened to again since the cassette days for fear they would still sound so weak…but this one has blown me away, literally. It is not the old multi-gen, hissy and muddy clusterphuck like so many of those audience recordings were, this one is really pretty friggin’ good. Not perfect, but VERY damn good. CD1 FM Broadcast 8.8 A little hiss present, and a little “compression” but a good tight sound nonetheless. The Miami 78 is Audience 8.3 With some big hall boom in the kick drum. CD 2 Audience 8.5 Thin in some places, but opens wider as it goes along. Taper possibly moves closer, and sound improves. CD 3 Audience 8.6 A loud, boisterous, beer soaked rock and roll affair with sound quality that I would describe as clear but missing some mid-band punch. It’s nice to have a chronological history sometimes, you get to hear a band just gain more and more confidence (not as if this band ever lacked any). This band’s sound and style really was custom made for these years but after that it dropped off the map. Too bad really, it’s a good time rock and roll music and transcends time. Soundboard 9.7 - This is what keeps me excited about collecting…this right here. I was not very knowledgeable of their live catalog (whatever is out there, IDK) and so I did not know what to expect with this. Man, just man, it literally BLEW me away! Just amazing in every way – and the playing, along with pristine sound quality, it’s just a no-brainer. I did not know how accomplished these guys were, the musicianship is off the charts good. Very tight, very professional, and great songs for the style they play in – they even cover Lynyrd Skynyrd as a nod to their counterparts. Good, I mean, GREAT stuff! Audience 8.6 - A kind of bumpy ride at times, being immersed in the middle of a rowdy audience, but the music comes through surprisingly well for such a massive cataclysm it must have been! It’s kind of fun, it’s a time capsule, and as long as I can hear the music in a clear way, even if it is not “hi-fi”, it’s fine by me. Audience 8.4 - A very rare treat, to hear a complete “Preservation” era show. There’s really not a lot of 1973 recording around. This one sounds just fine, while not venturing too far in either direction dynamically, and some lack of clarity down low in the spectrum…but the upper mids and highs seem fine. It’s a good recording that could use your own EQ flavoring to round it into shape. I am happy to have this as I have not heard many, if any, ’73 tapes as good as this.
