• Audience 9.1 - Excellent fidelity, good and punchy with tight bass and airy vocals.
  • Audience 8.7 - Pretty decent with the only gripe being a lack of stereo sound separation but don’t let that deter you. This is a decent, powerful recording.
  • Audience 9.4 - If you can’t get into this rollicking, electric southern fried punk and roll then you aren’t alive. This kicks total ass!  Great sound quality and great atmosphere combined with a band that was unfairly ignored by the media at a time when new music and new attitudes were flourishing. Soundboard 8.8 - This recording, while being very clear and obviously recorded for a broadcast, is somewhat dated sounding…in a really good way. It sounds like a relic lost in time, but the band is good and tight. It’s the beginning of the 80’s, and their sound would soon get more FM friendly, here it’s still got that “proto metal” edge to it.

Soundboard 9.3 - Takes a minute to get a mix, but then it’s off to the races. Interesting to hear this very early period of the band. Very much a good o’l fashioned American hard rock band.
  • SDBRD 9.4 /Audience 8.1/Audience 8.8/Audience 8.3 - A comprehensive collection but not everything is represented here, but I would say the more complete recordings are…and so, well, what you get is a pretty mixed bag. The good stuff is very good, and the not so good stuff is…not so good. What does it mean? Should I get this 4 disc set?  Yes you should if you care anything at all about this seminal band. There just isn’t a whole lot of live “bootleg” recordings because they predate the era of the taper – not to say there aren’t tapes from 1967-1968 because there are, but not nearly as plentiful or as good as tapes that were made subsequently. That being said, I still found myself listening to everything in this set because you can’t argue the fact that hearing Jeff Beck or Jimmy Page before they were rock gods is immensely interesting. • Pro TV Studio 8.7 - A good live recording with atmosphere, it sounds slightly dated but has the ability to transport you to the time and place…I think that when a recording can do that, it overcomes some of the limitations that may be present. This recording does lack a little bit of middle band clarity. Yes Amsterdam Concert Hall Netherlands 1972 (Last track - Hollywood Bowl 1975) 1. I've Seen All Good People 2. Heart Of The Sunrise 3. • Audience 9.2 - A big and warm sound here, with excellent clarity and dynamics. The music at full blast gets just a bit of overload (not distortion, but just a sense of the wall of sound thing) all in all it is safe to say this one is highly recommended. • Audience 9.4 - Lively, crisp, detailed sound make this a MUST have for this tour.
  • Audience 8.4 - A really good capture all things considered. At moments it gets very immersive.
  • Audience 8.3 - Not too bad, with some telltale big hall boom (not that much) and maybe recorded from somewhere in the middle of the hall. It’s a welcome tape though, not that many decent 76 shows to choose from.
  • Audience 9.2 - Sweet “in the pocket” sound makes this a great listen!
  • Audience 8.8 - Very nice and clear, with a great low end presence and warm atmosphere. Absolutely lovely to listen to and besides that it’s from a relatively poorly documented tour. Very worthwhile!
  • Audience 7.7 - Somewhat compressed sound translating into a murky type mix, but sonically it is not offensive just not very detailed. There’s also some tape noise present. The selling point of course is that this is a very adventurous, musically speaking, set. Long long tracks with much bravado and brilliance. Worth it for that alone!
  • Radio Broadcast 8.8 - Well, this is one unique sounding recording for a radio broadcast. When I first began to listen I thought this was an open mic style thing but when the guitar kicked in I knew it was probably a live mixed open mic/close mic job. The engineer battles to get a decent mix but it doesn’t reach the levels of what you’d expect of a professional broadcast recording. Does that mean it is bad? No, it’s decent sounding for all intents and purposes…but it certainly could have been a lot better. That said, it’s a great performance by the band. I was introduced to the music of Yes not by the ubiquitous Close To The Edge but from the album Tormato, which they are touring here, and in particular by the song “Don’t Kill The Whale” which I love to this day and which is performed here. • Soundboard 9.5 - Fantastic, sparkling, brilliance! Right up there with the Cleveland show from 1978.
  • Soundboard 9.8 - Exceptional sound and performance make this not only a must have, but a desert island disc!
  • Audience 8.6 - Steve Howe guitar is prominent in the mix, which I am fine with.
  • Audience 8.4 - Good solid punch, a well defined mid band and decent highs. A keeper!

YES – Decades 1970-1980 (Deluxe Metal Canister 11 CD)

Original price was: $85.00.Current price is: $70.00.
This set was assembled with both the hardcore collector and casual collector in mind. The variety of material that will appeal to longtime Yes collectors is the immediate standout feature, aside from the beautiful design of the canister itself. Now, let this be the one and only disclaimer: The inclusion of the Dallas 1972 show, even though it may be considered below the high standards set by collectors of this venerable progressive rock band, was too important to not acknowledge here because, as you know, we lost Alan White not that long ago and the Dallas '72 gig was his first with the band. It's also kind of interesting to hear how well he did with only a couple of days to learn the challenging material. The rest of the set is an excellent combination of stuff guaranteed to keep you interested throughout the entire set. Highlights include the new to circulation Providence 1976 which is an excellent sounding tape, and the demos/alternates from Time And A Word. • Audience 7.8 - A little tape noise comes through, but the music has frequency intact giving it a pretty good overall sound field – maybe slightly compressed and not pinpoint accurate with the separation but one can get into this show. It is a “fine” audience capture.
  • Audience 8.6 - This is a very fine recording that has recently surfaced, a tour that had the band displaying their absolute mastery of the ultra complex progressive rock extravaganzas that sometimes took up nearly the entire side of an LP.  Audiences back then were fully engaged with such performances, unlike today.

  • Audience 7.8 - Interesting recording, seems like it was done from the keyboard side of the stage for sure as they come through clear and loud, followed by guitar. The rhythm section is somewhat indistinct and vocals, while pretty front and center too, are fighting for the space that the keyboards occupy causing a bandwidth battle. What you have is a fight to control the mid-band range, so while I think this recording is good and clear, it’s too much happening in the middle. One thing you may also notice, the feeling you might get is that this is still the 70’s, even though it is the end of the decade, the music and atmosphere here is still firmly planted in the 70’s.
  • Audience 8.9 - A worthy addition to any Yes fan’s collection! The selling point? A band absolutely firing on all cylinders, and a great “live” sounding tape!
  • Soundboard 8.6 - Needs a wider and brighter sound spectrum EQ job but it’s still a great listen, perfect for someone to remaster.
  • Audience 8.7 - Electric and palpable, from the band on down to the audience members, a solid gig and a pretty enjoyable recording with a terrific bass response especially. In the pantheon of Yes shows, I’d have to rate this performance as transcendent, and a great reminder of what Patrick Moraz contributed in his brief tenure. • Soundboard 9.3 - I enjoy listening to excellent recordings of Yes from 1980 and 1984 because  they are full of music that I always manage to find new depth of creativity in every time I hear it. • Audience 9.2 - A recording that does more than merely capture a live concert on tape, it captures the dynamics and palpable vibe of the event. This is lovely stuff, with the band delivering stunning readings of majestic progressive rock numbers like Sound Chaser and Close To The Edge. To be honest, sometimes the overly jazzy keyboards of Moraz do conflict with the style and sound of the band but mostly he is able to provide the correct sounds during the key parts. • Audience 8.5/8.7 - Both tapes are not well known, and are pre-Close To The Edge making them quite interesting to the fans of early period Yes. Both tapes sound pretty good, with the nod going to Tucson for just that little bit of clarity it has overall. There’s enough dynamics, atmosphere, and clarity to allow the listener to settle in to each show and appreciate the details (great ripping Hammond work by Wakeman throughout). Good to have these shows in the collection. • Audience 8.7 - A very high quality effort made here, with the only detracting factor being a little less than ideal clarity but nevertheless it is a very fine listen, with all instruments nicely separated, and a good mix from the mains (and good atmosphere) so yeah, get it.
  • Audience 9.3 - A very bright sounding tape, good clarity, and good depth of sound especially the toms, vocals, and a rather brassy but classy bass. Aside from any soundboards out there, this tour is worth re-examining and having very strong tapes to enjoy again is truly appreciated and you will love this one. • Audience 9.3 - Legendary Mike “The Mic” Millard recording and what a sparkling one it is. It’s hard to place Yes’s music into any sort of time frame because it is timeless, therefore a good 1991 show is just as “good” as a 1971 show, meaning as you listen you realize there’s no real difference in that the 1991 show might as well be the band during any time frame because it’s just as good. • Audience 9.6 - After allowing the soundman to adjust during the first few minutes of the show, what you soon will discover is that this is one of the best ’77 shows ever. Not just for sound quality, but performance. Just amazing in every way…and an absolute must have.

  • Audience 8.8 - A tape that does NOT suffer at all from narrowness as it is truly wide open and atmospheric… but at the expense of separation of instruments. Does that mean it is bad or not worth hearing?  Hell no – this is a VERY GOOD tape recording, I think for myself I always want to hear distinct bass notes because I am such a big fan of Chris Squire, and here he is mainly the “bottom” for the sound, and occasionally you get to hear his notes ring out and float above the sound but not always. I am spoiled though, because not all tapes are going to be Cleveland ’78!  However, since this is a 1980 show, I think it is one to get as I find this period of the band extremely interesting to listen to especially live. • Audience 7.9 - This is NOT a hi-fidelity tape at all, but for what it is you will find yourself diving in with all ears. Why? It is an INTIMATE capture, with a great warm bass sound, and just a real closeness and immediacy that overcomes what are some obvious tape limitations. The BEST average audience tape you will ever hear!
  • Soundboard 8.9 - A solid, gut punching recording that focuses in on some good midrange and a well defined Chris Squire. Good deal!
  • Audience 8.8 - A reasonably clear and even somewhat dynamic old tape, that sounds to me like someone did some work on it and thankfully so.  I’ll take as many of these 1980 tapes as I can because I think this is a misunderstood period for the band. I personally think this is incredibly progressive music, and of course they sound great especially here in front of a London audience.
