Audience 8.8 - A very pleasant, easy on the ears recording. There's a lot of positive atmosphere and some mild audience participation but this is definitely one you can get into. Soundboard 9.4 - Even though I am less of a hardcore metalhead these days compared to, say, when I was in my 20's, I can honestly say I still enjoy listening to Megadeth music. The fact is, when you get a recording this good, when you can hear everything clearly, you better understand the genius that is Dave Mustaine. Let's face it - the guy is just gifted. How you can sing and play those insane, complex chord patterns, I will never know. Audience 8.7 - Small club feel, and a good tape to learn what this band was about, since there's a strange sort of "Spinal Tap" mysticism about them that has endured. The old recording here sounds kind of dated, and there's a few occasional sonic oddities that pop up now and again (like gentle phasing) but thankfully these are short-lived. The tape here is not muddy or screechy, it is focused primarily on guitars and vocals in the mix, so season to taste with your EQ if you want to roll in some added low end. It is a very good tape and fun to listen to. ANVIL Golden Mask Bar Arvida,Quebec, CAN. 1981 Disc 1 01. School Love 02. Steamin' 03. 666 04. Flyin' Cryin' 05. I Want You Both (With Me) 06. Soundboard 9.1 - A decent if slightly muted mix, although drums and vocals retain more of an animated feel about their sound. I like this period, it sounds very 1970's (as if Frank ever really sounded any different) but I am not greedy and I take any board tape I can get, this one is certainly worthy of the collection. Audience 8.9 - This is a good, solid recording with a pleasant mix of deep bottom (and detailed kick drum) and clear highs. Definitely this has to be one of the best audios from this tour that is not a soundboard. STRYPER Austin Opry House Austin, Texas 1.22.89 01. Intro - Battle Hymn Of The Republic 02. Audience 8.6 - It sounds like this tape has gone through a lot of mastering trying to find a way to mitigate it's flaws, and by some extent I would say it was successful...but at the cost of taking out some of the good aspects of the EQ. What I mean to say is that if they had not taken the effort, you would be listening to a lot of screechiness, it is evident that this tape had overloaded high end. Now that some of the offending frequencies have been removed, it is much more listenable and can actually be enjoyed once your ears settle in to the odd mix. Not one of the best, but neither is it garbage and the fact of the matter is that we don't have an abundance of tapes from Stryper's first tour. This set list is also great, so I forgive the imperfections and applaud the mastering efforts. STRYPER Anaheim Convention Center Anaheim, California 3.15.85 Disc 1 01. intro 02. Loud 'N' Clear 03. Audience 8.8 - This is one of those kind of tapes that sound realistic. That doesn't mean to say it sounds lifelike, because your ears hear in hi-fidelity and detect all the nuance (as long as the volume isn't earsplittingly loud). Soundboard 9.2 - Some fiddling at the board to dial in the mix starts this recording, so bear with it because it does get better. Soundboard 9.8 - It's been a blast hearing all these killer Nuge board tapes that have surfaced recently. This one is a rip-roaring beast, within the first three minutes you know your going to just get annihilated. Audience 8.7 - Sometimes a recording that may not be rated in the 9's might be passed over out of hand by picky collectors. That would be a huge mistake in this case. These are both unbelievably cool in a variety of ways - and the sound quality is not even an issue. The audio is fine for a super loud British metal band that comes to Texas and plays smallish venues - you can hear everything clearly. I would say that you might not get the wide spectrum, the sound is going to be focused on the middle range of instruments which gives you good guitar/vocal action at the expense of maybe the kick drum, and definition of bass, so who cares? It's not a deal-breaker at all because once you start listening you soon realize how kick ass these shows are. This is the stuff man! NOTE: Both of these shows have different dates than the single CD releases found on this site. You won't be duplicating anything, they are different dates for both the San Antonio and Kileen gigs.
