• Audience 9.1 - A fascinating document! Well, for one thing, it has that visceral, thump to your chest power and immediacy while you are immersed in the pit with your bros…but the crowd only makes this better. Such amazing atmosphere! The other thing is that this is NOT your mid 70’s blues guitar pub rock – it is much more along the punk/grunge aesthetic in how Rory is playing and his tone. Sure, he plays a lot of blues, but it does not come across the same as it did in ’74…it comes across as music that can breathe new life into what could be considered a dated musical form.

  • Audience 9.3 - A great, very lively and sharp recording. I love the mix here too, drums are prominent without being boomy, guitars are complimentary and tuneful. This is a really fun hour of listening pleasure and will get repeat plays in your player for sure. The inclusion of Prince on two songs is just the icing on the cake.

  • Studio 9.5 - A really detailed, complete set which contains just about everything you ever wanted to hear regarding the pre-Kiss band Wicked Lester. Is it necessary?  I mean, there’s a lot of repetition here, but I have to say it is kind of necessary when you call something complete, you should provide that to the collector and this set does. Quality is great.

  • Early Show Audience 8.8 - Not to be confused with another Chicago ’81, this is from the Uptown Theatre on November 27th, and it’s relatively new to circulation. The sound quality is very good, with especially nice meatiness on drums, and a close, warm guitar tone and presence which makes this one to have in the collection.

Late Show Audience 8.8 - Very similar to the early show, maybe just a touch less defined due to being in a different spot, but at times it’s also just a touch clearer – so this leads me to believe it’s just a matter of where the microphone is at any given time. Must have been a good recorder though, because the sound is good on the low end and the mids, and highs are not excessive but rather kind of toned down in a good way.  It’s the kind of recording that you can turn up real loud.

  • Audience 8.6 – 8.8  - All of the recordings here are good to very good audience recordings made on obviously portable tape recorders with limited capacity to hold the bandwidth needed for a loud, intense rock group. That being said, the tapes have gone through processing that allows more music information to come through, less tape hiss and background gunk, so you get to actually hear and decipher well what can only be described as groundbreaking experimental rock/jazz/prog by the band that wrote the book on it. Amazing power and finesse on display, and to reiterate my point on sound quality – this collection of live KC is still fundamentally indispensable to any self-proclaimed prog rock aficionado. • Soundboard 9.4 - Anytime you can find a soundboard of this band you really ought to grab it. I think it allows the listener to get all the nuance, the sound effects so-to-speak that make Ghost a little bit better than the competition. Plus the songs are interesting, and the voice is perfectly matched to the style.

Upper Darby 1980 FM Broadcast 9.5 - This is from a KBFH reel so yeah, it’s fantastic.

  • Dublin 1974 Soundboard 9.4 - This is a sweet one, it’s early in the new year (a year he would tour extensively during), and he’s in the beautiful city of Dublin, possibly thinking maybe this is how he’ll kick off the ambitious tour, and he just kills it!  I would rate the recording higher but for some sizzle on the highs (cymbal crashes, etc.) that don’t hurt the tape so much as they don’t belong on a professionally made for release recording, if indeed that is what this was for. So, that being said you can still dive into this with the full knowledge that it will live up to the rating and then some!

Limerick 1972 Soundboard 8.8 - Sounds like this originates from TV or local radio and suffers from some compression limitations and occasionally drop outs due to sheer age. It’s still professionally recorded, so it’s got bones to work with and you’ll be able to get into it but because it is made for TV (or radio?) there is interruption for interviews – so you have to take this short piece for what it is. It’s filler for the excellent Dublin ’74 and it is fine in that capacity.

  • Audience 8.5 - This is one very loud recording, and while it does not distort, it’s in need of an EQ job to tamper down some of the mid and upper mid to high band just to give it more listenability. As it is, it sounds very much like an early Iron Maiden tape…it just has that quality to it. There are very few live tapes of this outfit, so I take this with a lot of curiosity to hear what these guys were about and can forgive the fact that, while this tape falls below my own threshold of what I can tolerate more than once, it does live up to satisfying my curiosity. I find the band full of promise and potential, and I want to hear more, better quality live tapes but will start with listening to their LP release which I recently obtained.

Dublin 1985 Audience 8.8 - A really good and spacey recording loaded with crowd ambience, as guitars and synths float just overhead. Drums sound pretty tight here, and vocals are perhaps the most prominent next to keys. Good one!

  • Stockholm 1975 FM Broadcast 9.2 - Clear and bright, the only thing my ears notice that could detract is the slight overcrowding in the upper mid frequency but typically that only seems to happen when there’s furious on stage jamming (which I guess when it is this band, that is a lot), but this is minor, this is a great recording and a pleasure to listen to!

Millersville 1975 Audience 8.9 - This is a hot tape! Maybe lacks a little mid-band clarity, but this, again, is kind of being nitpicky seeing as how there’s a lot of soundboard tapes of this band (not so much from ’75 though). This show has seen very little circulation, if any at all, but it deserves to be in every collection and thankfully it is presented here alongside another great sounding show. Yes!

  • Los Angeles 1972 FM Broadcast 9.0 - This is a fine tape for the vintage, sounding maybe a little “dated” after all it’s older than most of the people who plan on listening to it!  But, if you remember the band like it was yesterday, expect to be transported back in time with this show.

Seattle 1973 Audience 8.8 - A fine tape, that brightens up as it goes and becomes a real charmer. The separation of instruments is really good, and that nice, tight, reverb after drum hits gives you a good sense of the hall.

  • St. Austell 1980 Audience 8.4 - In the pantheon of early Maiden live recordings this one is far from the worst, in fact I would say it’s worth a good listen because one thing is a grimy, muddy old tape and another is a relatively good tape that is NOT muddy but maybe does not have a wide dynamic range…and I’ll take the latter every time.
