  • Audience 8.8 - A fascinating recording, obviously with high quality microphones because there’s a detail here, especially with drums and bass (managing to realistically capture the depth of bass and the precision of drums). Guitar and to a lesser degree vocals get pushed slightly behind drums and bass, and the keyboards are a little bit behind those. Not to worry, even when the guitar work is almost tough to make out (taper must have been on one side of the stage) you have to remember Gilmour plays a lot of high notes which tend to carry across any hall so they are picked up here. My opinion is that because of the elegance of the way the bass and drums are recorded, when the guitar is really present it makes for something pretty amazing when it all comes together (and it does, just not all the time). • Soundboard 9.8 - I remember a few of the radio hits this band had, but honestly I never gave them a fair shake. Now I know what I was missing. Damn! At times I even think this band may have studied Frank Zappa, their stage banter is the giveaway. • Audience 9.7 - This was broadcast live at the time but I can tell you it is not a soundboard. There is too much ambience (a small club apparently) that gives you the impression they did not even need to run a board feed for this broadcast. It’s superbly captured, the detail, the depth, man…this is how they should record all concerts! Amazing stuff. • Audience 8.2 - This rare old tape shows signs of age, with the typical problems such as tape hiss and some dropouts occasionally but it is saved because there is music underneath it, I mean, you do hear the band reasonably well and it happens that, for whatever reason, there is no abundance of ’79 shows by this band. Plenty of 80’s, and some pre-’79 too but not a lot of 1979 gigs. Also, of note this gig was the one right before their appearance on Rockpalast.

  • Audience 8.7 - Recorded with reel to reel tape machine, this is actually very good although it begins with some fluctuations as the tapers settle in. They do an admirable job throughout as the tape stabilizes, they comment here and there but keep it to a minimum, as is the crowd noise. So, it’s a relaxing and enjoyable experience, the band sounding like they are not willing to sell out just yet as their set is not necessarily a top 40 showcase which is good actually. • Audience 8.8 - You know right away that this is a decent recording but it takes a song to find the sweet spot. You keep hoping it opens up more, and it does, and then just sit back and enjoy…until the power failure (hence the title). Things are resolved quickly though and the fun begins again. A delightful show! Rush Sports Arena, San Diego, CA February 3, 1986 This might be a new source put into circulation. This date has never been on TTD. This was the Power Windows tour, and ironically, the band has a power failure durng Marathon, after the power returns, starts Marathon over again. • Audience 8.7 - A nicely atmospheric recording without reverb which is nice. Sound mix is good, you hear everyone in pretty good detail. Sounds like it might be maybe 1/3 of the way back in the hall but it’s done with good equipment seems like. Overall a good recording here. • Soundboard 9.5 - So I haven’t kept up with this band since Steve Morse joined. I’ve always loved them, but they just fell off my radar. It was with great pleasure that I reacquainted myself with them as I reviewed this show. It’s multi-layered, multi-dimensional music with some resemblance to the old band if Ritchie traded places with his Southern fried twin brother!  I mean, it works, don’t get me wrong – but it can fool you because it’s not Ritchie’s band by any stretch. I like this one maybe a little better to be honest. This is a “deeper” Deep Purple actually, and the orchestra behind them makes it that much more interesting, if sometimes a little bit “cabaret” but it still rocks when it has to and the guitar work by Morse is impeccable. • Soundboard 8.8 - A real surprise, and a real treat this one! The band is playing a college campus and having been on the road for a while their chops are all finely honed. It’s so nice to hear a tape where Terry’s guitar is articulate and clear and not buried in the mud. This is NOT a muddy tape, if you are getting tired of hearing all those muddy early 70’s tapes out there, this one is for you. Chicago Stephen F. • Audience 7.8 - A recent remastering job has brought out much more of the music in this tape. It once circulated for a while in unlistenable quality, which is why you are probably unfamiliar with it. Now, it was rescued from the original reel to reel it was recorded on and spruced up a bit. I can honestly say it is MUCH better! That is all relative of course to the actual sound of this tape – which is average even though it’s clearer than before by far. What is happening is the music is all blended together with only vocals riding over it, to where you get distinct definition on them but everything else is hard to decipher…I mean unless you aren’t counting stadium bass/drum sound. To be completely fair, I listened to most of this show and my ears did adjust, and I started to get more out of it. • Audience 9.3 - Superbly done, even if it gets off to a slow start with taper getting into position…but from there it’s just an amazing capture with enough ambience and overhead to give you an excellent sense of space and time. • Audience 8.9  - Another great tape of the band’s News of the World tour, this time the second night at the LA Forum in March of that year. It’s just great, it’s a band that knows they are killing it every night. I never get tired of listening to the bravado.
