Audience 8.6 - This is a surprisingly decent sounding tape. I was not expecting it to be anything close to this good, quite frankly. Clarity is reasonable, it’s not a muddy tape, there is some dynamic to it without distortion (although bass is not well defined). Studio Rehearsals 8.8 - Thankfully recorded on something other than a cheap boombox so the quality is there as far as being able to hear everything clear. Vocals are the only thing that does not ring out clearly, but other than that this is gold. This early Metallica is a far cry from what would be in just a few short years. Killing Time Released in '94 via a collaboration between KNAC and Ron McGovney, a number of these demos were debuted during the CLASSIC and ORIGINAL Mandatory Metallica show on 105.5 KNAC. They did a whole week with Ron McGovney in the studio and some of these gems were played on the air. Pat O'Connor, one of the DJ's from the Mandatory show, had his hand in putting out numerous Silver Bootleg CD's and promptly released Sucking My Love between '94 and '95 and then released Things That Should Not Be in late '95. Soundboard 8.7 - This is the kind of soundboard that was probably meant just for soundman audio reference. It’s fine though, and generally speaking, way better than any audience tape because Metallica, especially in 1986 (I know because I saw them in ’86 and it was the loudest concert I’d ever heard) was so loud there wasn’t any way to get a good capture unless you had excellent gear with mic level adjustment. Studio Quality 9.4 As expected, these are from studios sessions and having been remastered (to freshen the old tapes up), it sounds quite good. The material sounds a bit dated though, I mean I know it is Bowie but it’s probably not his best stuff in my opinion…some people like it though. David Bowie - Sigma Sound 1974 1. Young Americans [first take] 0:20. An incomplete version with no vocal. 2. Young Americans [second take] 2:57. An incomplete version which ends with David laughing after singing “President Nixon.” 3. Young Americans [third take] 5:40. A complete version with slight lyrical differences to the finished version. 4. Shilling The Rubes 5:09. Complete version. Audience 8.5 - A somewhat roughed up old tape with some hiss, and audience members who appear on the tape in their excitement (not too bad) but the music is here man, it’s relatively close to the stage and guitar seemed to be a little back behind the rest except when he used the talk box and it was front and center… very strange! Bass is sitting nicely in the mix (not a boomy sound, pretty defined). I enjoyed listening, especially because Joe was really good, he kept me engaged with this one. I found the audience near taper to be interesting and I enjoyed hearing them on the tape believe it or not. It is a real time capsule! So, all in all, I do recommend to fans because how much Joe/Barnstorm is out there anyway? Soundboard 9.6 - Excellent in every respect, including the fact that there’s some audience bleeding into stage mics which in my opinion immensely help soundboard recordings from becoming too sterile. No chance of that happening here, so what you get is simply wonderful including excellent performances by everyone. FM Broadcast 9.4 - This could be considered as one of the best live documents of the band I have ever heard. While there is the faintest amount of FM static in the background during quiet parts, this does not distract in any way the absolute mastery of music that this band delivered. Just stunning, and I can imagine how many young musicians must have been inspired after hearing this band live. Do yourself a favor and grab this, it’s phenomenal.
