No chance of that happening here, so what you get is simply wonderful including excellent performances by everyone. FM Broadcast 9.4 - This could be considered as one of the best live documents of the band I have ever heard. While there is the faintest amount of FM static in the background during quiet parts, this does not distract in any way the absolute mastery of music that this band delivered. Just stunning, and I can imagine how many young musicians must have been inspired after hearing this band live. Do yourself a favor and grab this, it’s phenomenal. Audience 9.5 - If the date of this show looks familiar, it’s because she’s opening for Black Sabbath! Now, while this music is a product of its time, it is not to say that it’s not worthy of examination – I’ll be the first to say I love this stuff. First, it’s just kick ass rock and roll, with loads of hooks and even though the majority of the song structures are standard barre chord blues-based riff rock, they have put enough creativity in them to make you take notice. Ruby is best known for being stage mates with Jim Dandy in Black Oak Arkansas, but whatever she learned from him she has taken very good notes and delivers primo stadium caliber boogie. Soundboard 8.7 - The mix here tends to lean on a darker side (meaning more low end but not boomy) with guitar being clear enough but not the prominent instrument which is fine as this is totally all about ensemble and vastly different than anything he was doing with Deep Purple. That in itself makes this kind of odd, if he’s touring with Deep Purple yet managed to play some gigs with other people and sound so totally different musically, it’s really a zig zag routine here as the music is so all over the place in a good way. FM Broadcast 9.7- Brilliant sound, and so nice to have this because you get the full on experience with a great band and the great back up vocals of Ruby Starr (I honestly would not have minded at all for her to be the singer and Jim the washboard player and back up singer!). Soundboard 9.5 - A great recording, with an occasional stumble caused by the soundman trying to balance things and tweaking a mic too much getting feedback but thankfully only here and there. Gordon gets a little annoyed at it too, but he’s a real pro and it shows. I get the feeling that although some of his music may have been familiar to some in the audience, he probably did not relate so much to the hippy generation. Audience 9.7 and Soundboard 9.3 - Opening for ELP, this is the short lived Robert Fleischman period just before the arrival of Steve Perry. Hard to find anything about this recording to complain about, it’s amazingly life-like and extremely dynamic – about the only fault is how short it is. Taper arrived late, but makes up for it with a stellar recording. The bonus concert is a KBFH broadcast of a show taped in New York in 1978 of excellent quality. Well, if you care about the lyrics, get a lyric sheet – meanwhile, the music is fine with a guitar clinic being put on by Clapton. Later in the set, the sound switches over to an audience recording (7.2) and the vocals and bass return. FM Broadcast 8.8 A tape recorded off air sounding its age but surprisingly it’s actually decent enough that fans of this venerable band will rejoice at hearing such an early gig in very good quality. If you compare it to a typical FM broadcast you’ll be less ecstatic, but I tell you this: in the year 1982 there were few bands that could match the intensity and precision of Iron Maiden.
