Audience 8.7 - A very good tape for the time, and what a good time it is for the Stones. What I really enjoyed the most about this recording is how clear Mick Taylor is in the mix. It’s not a super bright sounding tape, and it is not muddy, it is better than average but it shines in atmosphere, performance, and vibe. The band is clearly enjoying the show as much as the audience is. A keeper! Audience 8.7 - A rattling, rambunctious recording that you will LOVE because it’s the sonic equivalent of the Stones’ personalities. Sure, yeah, this recording is imperfect but it does NOT suffer from muddiness, rather the opposite, it’s very “sharp” and sometimes cymbal crashes irritate (not always), and yet I listened all the way through and had a great time with this show. The quality is not really an issue. This is a just a classic Stones gig and the fact we have the opening acts, man, that is amazing! Audience 9.3 - I found this to be highly immersive and exceptionally enjoyable. First of all the band sounds invigorated, breathing new life into the old catalog of songs but fiery with the newer material. I like how you can tell when the taper has to duck so as not to be discovered because at those moments (thankfully few) you hear the music suddenly seem above you and farther away, kind of cool actually. Studio quality 9.4 - There’s some strange audio artifacts on the first song but it also could be one of the vocal mics acting funny…I could not figure it out but it’s intermittent. Audience 8,4 - Somewhat distant, but not the kind of distant that means taper is in nose bleed section, it’s still pretty clear. Fidelity is decent, not a real “full” sound but I got everything including piano in this. There’s some hiss, in the background mostly while music is playing it’s not a bother. I think most fans are going to appreciate this tape, it’s good. The Rolling Stones - Mannheim, September 3. 1973 CD 1: 1. Intro 2. Brown Sugar 3. Bitch 4. Gimme Shelter 5. Happy 6. Audience 8.4 - This tape has been recently surfaced and is not bad at all, however it did receive a “refresh” in the form of a re-mastering which boosted the levels a bit after notching out some noisy mids. It sounds pretty decent, maybe midway back in the venue but hearing pretty much everything especially Mick and Keith which is fine by me. Audience 8.4 - This tape takes a song to find its sweet spot (relatively speaking), so I give full credit to the taper for having the sense to make sure he was going to get the best capture he could get. What I like about this is that it’s not a muddy mess, it is bright, it’s present, and I think a very worthwhile addition to the collection especially considering it’s from 1972 which was, arguably, one of the Stones’ best tours. Audience 8.5 - Interesting tape, it’s very clear concerning Mr. Jagger! I kind of like this kind of tape, because it’s a realistic sound, like probably what your own ears would have picked up had you been there. I really get a sense of the venue, and the mood of the day. The band sound really hyped, it feels they are playing with a sense of urgency and anger. The sound does sometimes slightly fade out but it comes right back and it is not very frequent. Myrtle Beach 1978 Audience 8.3 - This recording is not well known among collectors and has fallen through the cracks over time, the fact that it is not a great sounding tape is perhaps one reason why. That being said, I have heard much worse than this. St. Louis 1978 Audience 8.7 - The highlight of this recording is the nice live sound of Charlie Watts, with Mick being next up in the mix. Everything else is there, with decent enough clarity, but what makes the tape worth diving into is the cool “liveness” of it. It has the feel of a smaller venue (relatively speaking). It is easy to see why this was picked up by the Japanese bootleg machine, it is probably one that collectors want due to it being from the ’78 tour and reasonably good quality, and great performance. Audience 8.5 - Pretty middle of the road, not annoying or bad, but not crystal clear. Hard to hear any detail in the guitars, it’s on the bassy side, so it’s bass and Jagger, and some locomotive sound which could be Keith and Ronnie. I mean, it is clear enough, it’s not a “bad” tape at all – in fact listening closely I am tempted to say this was pulled from a video source. Audience 8.4 - This is a tape that fits the Stones image, it’s rough, raw, and loaded with chaotic energy. It has flaws, but it recovers and gets back onto your good side. You will get used to the screaming chick, thankfully her howls are spread out. Try not to get too wrapped up into the occasional drop out or glitch because you can really get sucked into this concert if you let yourself. Madison Square Garden New York, June 24th, 1975 Disc 1

Audience 8.4 Sourced from three different tape recordings, all audience, to make a complete show. Not that bad, but you aren’t listening to this for the high fidelity anyway. This was a celebration, a monumental event, as were pretty much all Stones shows from 1972 on. So, yeah, rowdy crowd, noise, all that and more. But, you know, I listen to these and I still enjoy them a lot. It’s the event that I hear, I really don’t care if I don’t get every detailed note I mean it’s the sloppy Stones isn’t it? Norfolk 1972 Audience 8.6 - A rough and tumble tape that surprisingly delivers the sounds you need to be able to hear the band play. The most important thing is this: Mick Taylor is the clearest! You wouldn’t expect that in a million years I know but here it is.
Indianapolis 1972 Audience 8.3 - Low end of the totem pole recording that is represented here because it is perhaps the best source for it. Is there anything salvageable at all? Yes. It’s distant and not distinct but for completists they will be happy to have the good source and complete their 1972 tour collections.

Audience 8.7 - A very well recorded show by all accounts. The sound is round, and has nice timbre. Pro Radio broadcasts 9.0 to 8.8 - Ok, so let me put this into some context: These recordings are incredible and an absolute joy to listen to no matter what vintage they are. These are so historically significant, and the quality is surprisingly good when you consider what had to be absolute mayhem at the shows. French Radio Broadcast 8.4 - The recording does not sound what you would expect a broadcast to be, it sounds like an audience recording honestly. Then, you have to listen past the announcer comments (in French) between songs, and sometimes chiming in at the end, and beginning of the next song. Annoying, but I guess a small price to pay for having the priceless recordings of classic live Rolling Stones of this early vintage. Audience 8.5 - Here is perhaps one of the best captures from the tour (not quite as good as Oakland or LA but this tape has some real power). This recording seems to be rather close to the PA, but there’s no distortion. Tape is not overly wide ranging from high to low but there’s plenty of meat and a good amount of dynamics nonetheless. Soundboard 8.6 - This is a tape of contraries – on the one hand it is very forceful, with a wall of intense guitar/vocal energy with a driving bass pushing the sound through your brain – but it comes at a cost…which is dynamic range. The music is all there, you will even hear piano in the mix, and it’s just kind of lacking overall clarity and dynamics. All that being taken into consideration, what you have here is still a very good piece of history, a fun listen and one that does slightly improve (after the beginning where the sound is still finding its level/mix. Soundboard 9.4 - This is a commercial grade soundboard recording. Soundboard 9.3 - A good, and raw board tape which perfectly suits the ramshackle, lurching Stones sound and style. Listen to how Mick sounds especially on Shattered – it’s perfect end of story but wait a minute Bill Wyman is actually present and accounted for in a way you never hear. Pro Studio 10 - Immaculate, pristine, sourced from master studio reels. A unique insight presented here, and I was totally absorbed hearing it as if I was invited to sit on the actual recording sessions with the engineer. (Can't Seem To) Get A Line On You [4:24] The Sotheby’s Reel are Glyn John’s working tapes when he was the Stones' studio producer during Let it Bleed through the Sticky Fingers sessions, the Stones classic rock period. The tape reel was auctioned some years ago at the famous Sotheby's London auction house and featured some different versions of great songs. Something to point out; "Gimme Shelter" recorded here on 15th March 1969 and featuring Nicky Hopkins on piano, a version of "You Got The Silver" sung by Jagger from 16th February and an early take of “Sister Morphine” almost without piano. But remarkable is also "Loving Cup" that starts with a striking different piano intro and lasts more than 6:30 minutes. Minimal are the differences in the mix for songs like "You Gotta Move", "Dead Flowers" and "Sister Morphine" second version that all resemble the finished "Sticky Fingers" release. On the other side of the coin we have to put the many opening riffs of both "Brown Sugar" and "Bitch" that are tirelessly repeated by an engineer that rolls back and forth the tape looking for a better echo effect, it seems. When the Stones recorded "Brown Sugar" in Muscle Shoals Studios it is said that they tried the song the whole night to get it right, we can feel how they felt while listening to all these false starts. Anyway when the tracks are completed like version number 11 of "Brown Sugar", here comes an early take with Stu on piano and no sax or takes 19 and 20 of "Bitch" where you can hear Jagger ad-libbing over Keith Richards' guitar solo. Last track offered is a primitive version of "Shine A Light" called "(Can’t Seem To) Get A Line On You" that stems from Leon Russell’s session at Olympic Studios in early October 1969 with Jagger on vocals (different words) but this take was officially released in January 1994 on a Leon Russell CD.

Soundboard 9.4 When you listen critically, you will discover that this was a great tour. Most of the time the band was on point, fiery, gritty, dirty, sort of like they were in 1978 maybe, which is what you want The Stones to be like. The playing in particular on this show is fantastic, and the mix allows you to get everything in great detail. Certainly this is one to have in the collection.
