Audience 8.3 - I find these early club dates fascinating. It sounds closer to Taste than anything he was doing on subsequent tours. The guitar work is more off the cuff, edgier maybe. This recording features a pretty clear and up-front guitar, with vocals next and kick drum following. It’s good, a little hiss present, but to have tapes like this to hear the early period Rory post-Taste is most welcome. Audience 9.2 - Some tapes from the audience, that are done well, give you a sense of where you may have been in the room listening, it’s a “visual” recording and I like those kind. Audience 8.9 - Another great tape of the band’s News of the World tour, this time the second night at the LA Forum in March of that year. Audience 8.6 - A surprisingly good recording, given what had to be less than ideal conditions – small nightclub, primitive gear, etc. But they pulled it off, and captured what one might think of as Roxy Music’s “rookie card” since it is like their 2nd gig of their first US tour. Audience 9.3 - Superbly done, even if it gets off to a slow start with taper getting into position…but from there it’s just an amazing capture with enough ambience and overhead to give you an excellent sense of space and time. Audience 7.8 - A recent remastering job has brought out much more of the music in this tape. It once circulated for a while in unlistenable quality, which is why you are probably unfamiliar with it. Now, it was rescued from the original reel to reel it was recorded on and spruced up a bit. I can honestly say it is MUCH better! That is all relative of course to the actual sound of this tape – which is average even though it’s clearer than before by far. What is happening is the music is all blended together with only vocals riding over it, to where you get distinct definition on them but everything else is hard to decipher…I mean unless you aren’t counting stadium bass/drum sound. To be completely fair, I listened to most of this show and my ears did adjust, and I started to get more out of it. Soundboard 8.8 - A real surprise, and a real treat this one! The band is playing a college campus and having been on the road for a while their chops are all finely honed. It’s so nice to hear a tape where Terry’s guitar is articulate and clear and not buried in the mud. This is NOT a muddy tape, if you are getting tired of hearing all those muddy early 70’s tapes out there, this one is for you. Chicago Stephen F. Audience 8.3 - This is your standard “decent” sounding 70’s audience tape. It does not offer a wide dynamic range, although it is pretty clear and you hear every instrument and vocals above all of it in good clarity (important when it comes to Free where vocals are a huge component). Nothing about this tape offends the ears sonically speaking. It could be argued by this time Free was sounding maybe a little tired, but that is subjective. Soundboard 9.5 - So I haven’t kept up with this band since Steve Morse joined. I’ve always loved them, but they just fell off my radar. It was with great pleasure that I reacquainted myself with them as I reviewed this show. It’s multi-layered, multi-dimensional music with some resemblance to the old band if Ritchie traded places with his Southern fried twin brother! I mean, it works, don’t get me wrong – but it can fool you because it’s not Ritchie’s band by any stretch. I like this one maybe a little better to be honest. This is a “deeper” Deep Purple actually, and the orchestra behind them makes it that much more interesting, if sometimes a little bit “cabaret” but it still rocks when it has to and the guitar work by Morse is impeccable. Audience 8.1 - Not only is this incredibly important in the Maiden’s history but it’s also very listenable too. That is gotta qualify as a rarity! The band is on another level, I am 100% sure that this gig was important for all of them especially for Bruce being it was his first gig with them. GREAT playing by all I mean really great! A mix of various sources but I find overall quality to be very good to excellent. In fact, it's strange but there are better sounding tapes from '75 than there are for the following year. You'd think audio quality would get better each subsequent year...alas one only need to listen to most of the 1980's audience tapes to know that is simply not the case.
