Soundboard 9.7 - Terrific in every way this one will melt your brain. The engineer mixes this on the fly and works it out during Brown Sugar but there are some cool moments while he figures it out – like some stereo panning, and you’ll hear him juggle the bass a bit, but he gets the mix right and off we go! Studio quality 9.4 - There’s some strange audio artifacts on the first song but it also could be one of the vocal mics acting funny…I could not figure it out but it’s intermittent. The rest is spot on. Audience 8.8 - A very clean, clear tape which to my ears only needs one thing – more “fatness” – but I found myself getting used to the more midrangey sound as I listened and then I realized it’s a very good recording that requires you to stick with it until it kind of normalizes. I mean, there’s bass here, and it’s actually somewhat detailed…that is what this tape offers more than anything is that each instrument is pretty distinct in this mix. Pro 9.7 - This is a professional recording and I am not sure if it is a board tape but an open mic seems more logical after hearing. It’s great, and the band is a happy, jangly, fun, rollicking, well-oiled machine producing songs that make you want to dance…and then slit your wrists. Soundboard 9.4 - This is a collection of all soundboard recordings and they all vary but all excellent. I gave a generally very high rating because all in all I think it rates at least in the mid 9’s based on not only quality of sound but of content as well. Pro 9.7 - One has to wonder with all the various BBC recordings in the Bowie catalog, what do I get from having one more? My take on that is usually there is always something overlooked or that could have been better – and with this collection all I hear is sparkling perfection. Someone did their homework here. Audience 8.7 - This is a fun recording to listen to, sure it’s a bit ramshackle being as if you’ve been tossed into the mosh pit (in 1973 I guess the entire venue resembled a mosh pit full of people too stoned to mosh!), but it’s actually not bad. I imagine by this time the band must realize that glitter and costumes aren’t enough to carry the show when your competition is Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and other bands of that stature. Even if Bowie had anticipated all that by the time of this performance (undoubtedly he did), still the Ziggy Stardust premise seemed to be working well with the audiences as this tape can attest. AM Radio Broadcast 8.7 - This recording is most definitely from AM radio but it is clear and the dual guitar activities are on full display. You won’t get the depth of bass here, and sometimes you realize how dated a recording has to be if it originates off AM radio…but you listen anyway because it’s still good, and it’s still Wishbone Ash. Soundboard 9.1 - This is not a complete show, but WHO cares? It’s a vintage 1969 soundboard of the Who and man, it smokes! I’ll take it whoever which way I can get it (see what I did there?). BTW the complete show does exist, but the audio quality of the audience recording that makes up the difference is of significantly less fidelity that it was decided not to even include it for release. Audience 8.8 - This show finally comes to light after decades and it’s surprisingly good. It’s extremely insistent and powerful sounding with guitars really up front and vocals thankfully pretty nicely mixed in as well. Radio Broadcasts 9.4/9.1 - Overall quality is excellent with a couple of these sounding a little dated but nevertheless the quality of the content combined with broadcast over the air quality (never mind how many decades ago) I think this holds up quite well.
