(Can't Seem To) Get A Line On You [4:24] The Sotheby’s Reel are Glyn John’s working tapes when he was the Stones' studio producer during Let it Bleed through the Sticky Fingers sessions, the Stones classic rock period. The tape reel was auctioned some years ago at the famous Sotheby's London auction house and featured some different versions of great songs. Something to point out; "Gimme Shelter" recorded here on 15th March 1969 and featuring Nicky Hopkins on piano, a version of "You Got The Silver" sung by Jagger from 16th February and an early take of “Sister Morphine” almost without piano. But remarkable is also "Loving Cup" that starts with a striking different piano intro and lasts more than 6:30 minutes. Minimal are the differences in the mix for songs like "You Gotta Move", "Dead Flowers" and "Sister Morphine" second version that all resemble the finished "Sticky Fingers" release. On the other side of the coin we have to put the many opening riffs of both "Brown Sugar" and "Bitch" that are tirelessly repeated by an engineer that rolls back and forth the tape looking for a better echo effect, it seems. When the Stones recorded "Brown Sugar" in Muscle Shoals Studios it is said that they tried the song the whole night to get it right, we can feel how they felt while listening to all these false starts. Anyway when the tracks are completed like version number 11 of "Brown Sugar", here comes an early take with Stu on piano and no sax or takes 19 and 20 of "Bitch" where you can hear Jagger ad-libbing over Keith Richards' guitar solo. Last track offered is a primitive version of "Shine A Light" called "(Can’t Seem To) Get A Line On You" that stems from Leon Russell’s session at Olympic Studios in early October 1969 with Jagger on vocals (different words) but this take was officially released in January 1994 on a Leon Russell CD. -
Soundboard 9.4 When you listen critically, you will discover that this was a great tour. Most of the time the band was on point, fiery, gritty, dirty, sort of like they were in 1978 maybe, which is what you want The Stones to be like. The playing in particular on this show is fantastic, and the mix allows you to get everything in great detail. Certainly this is one to have in the collection. Studio Quality 9.7 - This is by far the best comp covering this crucial period. All tracks taken from the best possible master sources. It’s going to be very hard to top this one. Private recording 8.7 - This is a cool piece of history, and the sound quality does not play that big of a role even though it is decent. It’s kind of loud, a little overloaded in spots, but just because it is raw, it doesn’t mean it ain’t great. I had this on vinyl decades ago and it was one of my favorite boots. Soundboard 9.7 - Terrific in every way this one will melt your brain. The engineer mixes this on the fly and works it out during Brown Sugar but there are some cool moments while he figures it out – like some stereo panning, and you’ll hear him juggle the bass a bit, but he gets the mix right and off we go! Studio Quality 8.8 - Some tape hiss present, but the quality is there, makes for an interesting listen to hear a pre-final production version of these songs. When the gloss is removed it sounds like it could have been recorded in the mid ‘70’s. Studio Quality 9.6 - When you look at these multi-disc sets, you have to wonder if you are just getting the same old stuff recycled over and over again…well, to be sure, there is some song duplication – no way around that. On the other hand, there’s also a lot of stuff that might be new to you, and therein lays the attraction. You have to sometimes just go for it, and in the end you end up with a more complete assemblage of materials. I found this particular set rich with alternate versions and other uncommon outtakes, and well worth the effort. Audience 9.5 - Brilliant! After sound adjustments the PA system just cranks out the best, clearest sound you could hope for. Almost everything is clear and balanced in the mix, I mean it ain’t perfect (for instance we don’t get the best balance between Keith and Ron) but it’s darn good. The sound mix has nothing to do with how well the audio capture is but it factors slightly in the rating. Audience 9.3 - A sweet recording that is so comfortable to listen to, so easy on the ears with a nice rolling bass and present but not obtrusive drums. Mick is above the fray where he should be and guitars swirl and hum beneath him…excellent! Audience 9.1 - A great sounding capture that is just a little further back than the previous night…still it’s really good because the dynamic range is wide and warm. The sound mix itself is not heavy on the guitars here, it’s really Mick and drums followed by the low rumble of the bass. Guitars are here just not the spotlight instrument which in my opinion I prefer them front and center. Alas, I found myself able to appreciate the contributions of everyone else for once. Pro Studio and Pro Live All four volumes are excellent start to finish and even though songs do appear on other releases, there are inevitably always some gems that turn up on these well produced comps that you don’t find elsewhere. I think this one is well worth the effort, and you can cherry pick the volumes or go all in, save some money, and by getting the complete set you get the cool track sheet that does not come with each volume separately. Audience 8.8 - I really love this recording, it has great atmosphere, and a lively, raw intensity that gets you completely sucked into the concert. Audience 8.4 - A fine document albeit not without limitations. Sound is generally clear, the mix is heavily in favor of Keith’s rhythm guitar, although Mick Taylor is not absent. Mick Jagger is audible, not clearly, but he is audible. Bass sounds pretty good, Charlie is there too but not distinctly. It’s not muddy, really, it’s not close, it’s not far – this is a very good “average” tape if that makes any sense. The Seattle portion (included in this set) is maybe in the 8.7 range, this source being a bit better than the other version we offer here. BTW I think the Midnight Rambler version here is one of the best of the tour. Audience 8.6 - What is great about this tape is that again you have a situation where the highs are completely intact, in some parts maybe too much, but it lends itself perfectly to EQ’ing since you have no worry about losing highs. Great live energy, a great performance (when does he not?) also. -
Audience 8.3 - Somewhat thin and rather raucus, with an outdoor venue quality and perhaps taper somewhere right in the middle – not close up and not too far – but even so, I find the guitar almost too overwhelming and can imagine what it was for the concert-goers that day. So, if you like your guitar really loud, here is your tape. Audience 8.3 - I find these early club dates fascinating. It sounds closer to Taste than anything he was doing on subsequent tours. The guitar work is more off the cuff, edgier maybe. This recording features a pretty clear and up-front guitar, with vocals next and kick drum following. It’s good, a little hiss present, but to have tapes like this to hear the early period Rory post-Taste is most welcome. Audience 9.4 - I love recordings like this! Super loud but not distorted, and right in your face like your sitting on Rory’s side of the PA.
