• Soundboard 9.3 - Listen to the beginnings of something happening, you can feel it about to take off. It’s a bunch of free-thinking kids who’ve smoked a little something, maybe popped a few little somethings…and then whaddya know the blues and folk and country and all kinds of music you grew up with sounds a whole lot better if you amp it up and throw some wild licks here and there…maybe let the sound feedback some…the birth of the San Francisco sound of the 60’s. Some minor bumps and bruises with the old tape but it also sounds like it’s right in your living room so the minor hiccups don’t even phase you. • Audience 9.5 - A lot of audience periphery (shouting and bustling) but nonetheless it’s a crystal clean and very dynamic recording. The energy is palpable and comes right out pretty much all the way through as the audience is very responsive and Prince most definitely fed off it. Guitar tone is perfection – vocals very nicely placed in the mix as is everything really. Great, great stuff!

Audience 9.3 - The ’92 Aftershow is equally excellent with just slight differences in tone and distance to come second place to the Bataclan show.

Pro 9.3 – The radio broadcasts here are great and as you would expect, since they are professionally recorded, but honestly I still prefer the Bataclan audience tape which says an awful lot about what a good job taper did on that.

Audience 8.8 - The final disc contains London ’99 audience tape which is the weakest of this set but still decent enough to enjoy. Sounds somewhat distant (not in the stadium sense but small venue distant).

  • Soundboard 9.3 - There are moments in this recording that you swear it has to be one of Prince’s best ever – what got him so pumped up for this gig?  Maybe he was pumped for every gig but slightly more at certain gigs. I don’t know but this one got me pumped as well!  Love the energy and fluid playing.

  • Denver 1983 Soundboard 9.3 - Typical of the sharp and detailed board tapes from this tour.

Detroit 1983 Video source 8.6 - Possibly grabbed off a VHS or some other video source. I cannot confirm this 100% but my ears tell me that is the case here. It is a professional recording with a lot of issues concerning compression and noise – I say it is pro because of the location this is being recorded from which seems definite it is not from the audience.

  • Audience 9.4 - A tape that is almost TOO good…and by that I mean it has captured with sonic clarity the exact sound coming from the P.A. – which in this case was a P.A. that had some really pumping upper mid’s and high range frequencies!  No wonder people often leave home from a concert with a ringing in their ears…for weeks!  This show would have had me moving farther back to be honest. That being said it is just my own preference for sound – but the casual listener will find this recording damagingly good. • Soundboard 9.4 - This is not a pure board and by that I mean it sounds like some of the instruments are not direct patches through the board onto the tape. It sounds like a hybrid where some of it is a direct feed and some of it is mic’d up. You can tell it is something like that when listening to the difference between the keyboards and vocals, and drums (especially the kick).  Either way it’s great. • Audience 9.1 - This is a very cool old tape, first I have to issue a disclaimer: If you don’t like deep, round, brassy bass you won’t like this recording. Bass is the star of this show, and I don’t mean it’s a low end muddy mess either – it’s a beautiful bass sound that pretty much drowns out most of the keyboards (not entirely) and at least vocals area able to hold their own in the mix.  That all being said – this ROCKS!  I love it, I love hearing the tone and detail of the solid bass work of Greg Lake. Put this up there with your other favorite ELP boots because this surely will become one. Emerson, Lake & Palmer The Hollywood Bowl Los Angeles, CA, USA July 19, 1971 01. Bill Graham Intro 02. • Detroit 1973 Audience 8.4 - A somewhat average but clear enough tape that has some sort of wobbling effect during at least the beginning portion but evens out thereafter. I think this may not be complete when compared to any other performance during the tour – including the one that is paired in this set. San Bernadino 1974 - Audience 8.6 Keith Emerson and vocals clearly stand out in this recording, while drums and bass seem to not be as distinct. There is a small amount of tape hiss indicating the age of this tape, but I won’t slag this one off because it isn’t that bad at all. I think some top notch remastering work would really help this one out because the sounds are there – in fact they are pretty well and truly “in your face” as it Emerson, Lake & Palmer Live 1973/74 Disc 1 Cobo Hall Detroit, MI. 1973-12-04 01. • Audience 8.8 - This recording features tons of atmosphere and sometimes struggles over a loud audience. It is, however, very clear, with the majority of the sound mix favoring drums and bass but most prominently, Geddy’s vocals – which is fine – but Alex needs to be LOUDER man!  He’s there, he’s just not up as front here as I would prefer. In my quest to obtain every 2015 recording, I do not decide a preference for which ones I offer as most of them are very good to excellent and this here is no exception. • Audience 8.9 - Very clear recording, the kind where you know you are hearing exactly what your ears would be hearing at this place and time. The highs are nice here too, the crystalline “tink” of the ride cymbals even coming through with clarity. The mid range is well represented, the guitar and bass though do sound indistinct for all practical purposes so don’t expect detail on the bass notes. It’s a stadium after all. But this is very decent. • Audience 8.7 - This is a very strong, clear tape that captures almost too much atmosphere (crowd) and leans towards the upper-mid band frequencies a little much. • Soundboard 8.7 - The only flaw with this tape is that it features a typical video compression type sound but the mastering job mitigated a lot of that so that the sound does breathe a bit more. • Audience 9.5 - A sparkling, vivid recollection of a moment in time when an evening of progressive rock music was being performed by masters of the craft, and it was sublime. A recording that has wonderful atmosphere, solid and deep, showcasing both guitar and bass in a manner so that each are distinct yet blended perfectly. • Soundboard 9.3  - A very clean and mellow sounding board tape, and it suits the music well because everything is pinpoint accurate, which you really want as the playing is so well executed you need to hear it all as well as possible.   Grateful Dead May 19, 1974 Portland Coliseum Portland, OR Disc 1 Set 1 101 - Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo 102 - Mexicali Blues 103 - Big Railroad Blues 104 - Black Throated Wind 105 - Scarlet Begonias 106 - Beat It On Down The Line 107 - Tennessee Jed 108 - Me And Bobby McGee 109 - Sugaree 110 - Jack Straw 111 - It Must Have Been The Roses 112 - El Paso Disc 2 Set 1 cont'd 113 - Loose Lucy 114 - Money Money 115 - China Cat Sunflower 116 - I Know You Rider Set 2 117 - Tuning 118 - Promised Land 119 - Bertha 120 - Greatest Story Ever Told 121 - Ship Of Fools 122 - Weather Report Suite Disc 3 Set 2 cont'd 207 - Wharf Rat 208 - Big River 209 - Peggy-O 210 - Tico Tico 211 - Truckin' 212 - Mind Left Body Jam 213 - Not Fade Away 214 - Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad 215 - One More Saturday Night 216 - U.S. Blues 217 - Johnny B. • Grand Funk Railroad Hawaii 1971 - Soundboard 9.1 A scarcity of prime era  recordings mandate that anyone remotely interested in this band pursue any and all recordings that are A. Soundboard and/or B. decent audience for the simple reason that this band kicked ass. This is a true rarity – a soundboard and, yes, it kicks major ass. Grand Funk Railroad Boston 1971 Audience 8.7 - A very good tape surfaces and you can actually hear everything pretty clearly. This band played very loud (as did any self-respecting heavy rock band of the early 70’s) and consequently unless you smuggled in superior quality machinery you weren’t likely to be able to capture this sound with any clarity. This taper had better than average gear it seems, and even though it’s still somewhat distant from the stage, it is a tape that allows the listener to experience an entire show without struggling too hard to make out what is going on. • Audience 8.8 - A really good tape with a loud and phat bottom end that is probably not that unlike what the actual sound would have been at the show. If the vocals were a little bit louder I would have mistaken this for a radio broadcast. This is, without a doubt, one absolute must-have for anyone with even a remote interest in Judas Priest…but I’ll take it even further and say ANYONE who loves hard rock should get this one. • Audience 9.4 - If the house itself sounds great, and your taping with high quality equipment (most likely a small digital unit with a good, dynamic mic and level control), then your result will be something like this. A lot of detail comes through, as does, from time to time, a rowdy audience – that adds to the atmosphere and thankfully never wrecks the audio recording. • Audience 9.3 - A very good tape, with less of the perfect instrumental separation but more of the live power that can be delivered through good house P.A.’s, and as long as taper is not a complete moron and/or using radio shack circa 1985 gear, chances are you’ll end up with a nice recording…as this one is. • Audience 9.1 - Atmospheric, where even if it may be recorded from somewhere in the middle, the immersive experience has been well captured. Vocals sound lush and full, and percussion is crisp and well defined with a nice, rounded bottom end holding it all down. This is a decent recording that allows the listener to imagine where they are sitting and how the event sounded, the actual P.A. sound. • Audience 9.4 - Superb capture! There’s nothing I would change about this tape, it’s got a wonderful electric vibe and strong depth that leaves you wanting more. A great testament to the song craft of Gary Wright. • Audience 8.7 - It’s not necessarily a keeper but it is still a very good sounding tape that has maybe a touch more “atmosphere” than your used to. I could hear everything fine, although it isn’t the best in terms of instrument separation – it’s part and parcel sometimes when listening to audience recordings. I still can recommend this one, because it’s good enough that you won’t abandon it and it will sit nicely in your collection. • Audience 9.4 - If you can’t get into this rollicking, electric southern fried punk and roll then you aren’t alive. This kicks total ass!  Great sound quality and great atmosphere combined with a band that was unfairly ignored by the media at a time when new music and new attitudes were flourishing. I can listen to this all day…Fantastic! • Audience 8.6/Pro 9.1 - This recording was not done on great equipment but it’s not a load of crap. The high frequency range is well represented but at times when the horns hit higher notes it gets a little screechy. The atmosphere is a touch bouncy and live, mid and low frequencies are present but not powerful. Overall it’s not bad, but it isn’t going to set the world on fire.
