• CD 1&2 SDBRD/AUD Matrix 9.3 CD 2&3 Soundboard 9.5 - A great overview of John’s music contained herein. I admit I wasn’t too knowledgeable of his stuff, I knew his name (he is from Houston, he was just one of our locals) and had numerous chances to see him live…but sadly never did. I should have. This music is pretty basic, but will remind you a bit of Bob Dylan, and will entertain you endlessly with the lyrical wit and story-telling nature of the songs. A bright star, really, a shame that we lost him recently. John Prine 2/22/79 Rainbow Theatre Denver, CO Disc I:

  • Studio Quality 9.6 - When you look at these multi-disc sets, you have to wonder if you are just getting the same old stuff recycled over and over again…well, to be sure, there is some song duplication – no way around that. On the other hand, there’s also a lot of stuff that might be new to you, and therein lays the attraction. You have to sometimes just go for it, and in the end you end up with a more complete assemblage of materials. I found this particular set rich with alternate versions and other uncommon outtakes, and well worth the effort. • Audience 9.5 - This recording is special, each instrument occupies its own space and has great depth and tone, especially bass which is woody and precise. This recording showcases one really intrinsically valuable characteristic lacking in soundboards – and that is the sense of time and place, distance and depth. In order to get a good feel of a live concert, you sometimes need to have those elements and this tape has them all. • Soundboard 9.3 - This is an average of the rating that I confidently can say spans the entire set. There is some minor variance in the first disc being that is taken from four different sources, but consistently good. The exact date of the last disc (the rehearsals) is unknown but believed to be ’93 although people say it can be as early as 1989 also. I’ll let the experts decide but I have gone with the general wisdom of it being from ’93. • Audience 8.8 & 8.7  - Same taper for both nights, and thankfully this is someone who knew what they were doing as you can tell they diligently set their levels and position to maximize the end results, and man, what end results these are!  More probably for the outstanding performance and great house mix, but the tapes have held up well with just maybe a touch of overload in very loud parts that do not annoy, just you may notice it on occasion. Great performances by the band especially Craig who just rips on the guitar on practically every song and even Grace is in excellent form. A must!
  • Soundboard 9.7 - A pure unadulterated masterpiece of classic Prince music that ANYONE can appreciate. Rediscover this amazing talent, this is a packed set and well worth exploring.
  • Soundboard 9.7 - Sparkling, and I mean all facets – the sound quality, the performances, the musicianship, everything! Get it now, you won’t regret it.
  • CD 1 - Audience 8.4 - A lively, jumping tape that is a fun listen but the limitations include some minor over-saturation which surprisingly does not ruin anything, but keeps the rating in the mid 80’s technically speaking. I like this recording personally, I find it exhilarating!  CD CD 2 - Audience 8.8 - A very well made recording with a great balance to it, a warmth and tone that is pleasing to the ears. Lovely! CD 3 - Audience 8.2 - A tape with a preponderance of low end, to the point where you can’t ignore it, not that it is particularly muddy, just that it is bass heavy. I do get the other instruments thankfully, but like I said…bass. CD 4 - Same as disc 3, but I will say this much, on songs where the bass work is minimized, it sounds excellent.
  • Soundboard 9.4 - (Early and Late Show) - Both sets are predominately 9.4 Soundboards with occasional audience sources patched in for completeness. Both shows are highly enjoyable too. Good guitar tone, and good mix!
  • Early Show - Audience 8.4 - Not a tape that delivers a lot of dynamic range but is clear and everything on stage is heard. Also, some slight tape hiss present. A good recording maybe slightly above average. Late Show - Audience 8.8 - A lot more dynamic and brighter than the early set, this is a well recorded show.
  • Early Show - Audience 8.8 - Superb for an audience tape really, the only real flaws are some lack of low end depth and instrument separation but it’s not a deal breaker at all. Late Show - Soundboard 9.7 - So good, I mean it is as if they recorded it for official release. Great mix, great fidelity.
  • Early show - Audience 8.3  /  Late Show -  Audience 8.5
  • This set contains both shows recorded on Halloween night at the Felt Forum in NYC back in 1974. Early Show - Audience 8.5 - Right in the middle of the road, its good, not great. Late Show - Audience 8.9 - The only way I can explain this tape is that it starts off similar to the early show and at some point the taper moves to a hotter spot and the tape explodes with Frank’s amazing guitar right in your face. Even Frank himself makes a comment about his incendiary guitar work, I won’t spoil it though.
