Studio quality 9.6 - production on this is outstanding and flows nicely. Well thought out, and as comprehensive as it needs to be so it has a wider appeal and includes casual fans as well as seasoned collectors. The DVD is a nice touch!

Soundboard 8.9 - Man, this is just amazing. It sounds a little dated, maybe a little faded, but definitely NOT jaded! The live sound mix isn't perfect here, I think guitars should be louder (but at least in this board I can hear every note of the bass) but in defense of the guitars I can hear both of them somewhat distinctly. Vocals do suffer, they are pushed well back of the mix, at times they get closer to the right spot, but it's all good they are there but just not at the center of the mix. Illinois 2002 - Audience 9.5 - Superb recording considering how hard it is to properly capture live heavy metal. Normally what you get, even if on good gear, is a well captured loud sound without much separation of instruments...but here you can really wrap your ears around it all pretty distinctly. Columbus 1990 - Audience 9.0 - This is a good recording with a little less fullness and bottom end definition compared to the Illinois set. Montreal - Audience 8.7 - You can tell the tapers gear was of good quality, the capture is actually very clear but in capturing the actual sound at the show you gotta accept whatever is coming out of the PA system, and however the sound guy has mixed it. That being said, I can tolerate this one much more than 90% of all the other Metallica audience tapes which suffer greatly from sheer volume overload most of the time. Missouri - Soundboard 9.1 - Great drums sound believe it or not, and both guitars are distinguishable from one another which makes it very well worth hearing. These two guys can really play, maybe not quite Dave Mustaine level (ok so I am partial to Megadeth) but they can do what they do in very convincing fashion especially when you can actually hear it. Audience 8.8 - This is better than I give it credit for, mainly because it has all the elements needed to be very enjoyable - namely: clarity, separation of instruments, and atmosphere. Where it lacks the necessary qualifications to enter into 9.0 and above rating status is more in the dynamics range (is low end low, is high end high, are mids clear and punchy?) which here are expressed mostly with the lovely, brassy and defined bass sound. This is good! But perhaps we are spoiled now with all the audio riches we have at our disposal. SDBRD 8.9 - I would have rated this higher but I am not thrilled with the way it is mixed – to my ears too dry and thin. It is perfectly clear, very bright and slamming though, but I need more “atmosphere” and this recording is a PURE board feed. I mean, it’s awesome don’t get me wrong. -
