Soundboard 8.8 - A dated sounding board tape, yes it is good but I can see how there are limitations with board tapes just as there are with audience tapes. If I was a fan I would still love this show, I mean, it’s clear and clean and it’s finely performed so there’s no real downside here. Soundboard 8.7 - The only flaw with this tape is that it features a typical video compression type sound but the mastering job mitigated a lot of that so that the sound does breathe a bit more. It’s still very good, a little rough maybe but I take it and I am happy with it especially if nothing else because all instruments are present, the bass work is surprisingly defined in this mix…I can actually hear individual notes being played and my goodness Michael Anthony was a boss! Audience 8.7 - This is a very strong, clear tape that captures almost too much atmosphere (crowd) and leans towards the upper-mid band frequencies a little much. That being said, I still recommend this one because the sound is good enough to be very responsive to EQ, so if you season it to taste you will end up with a very nice experience. Audience 8.8 - This is the sound of the 80’s, it wasn’t exactly what you remembered! I completely missed these guys. I instantly assumed any 80’s band was shite…I was so stuck in my own world of Pink Floyd, Steppenwolf, Hendrix, Van Halen, Sabbath, Zeppelin….but I should have been more open minded. Audience 9.1 - This is a very cool old tape, first I have to issue a disclaimer: If you don’t like deep, round, brassy bass you won’t like this recording. Bass is the star of this show, and I don’t mean it’s a low end muddy mess either – it’s a beautiful bass sound that pretty much drowns out most of the keyboards (not entirely) and at least vocals area able to hold their own in the mix. That all being said – this ROCKS! I love it, I love hearing the tone and detail of the solid bass work of Greg Lake. Soundboard 9.3 - Listen to the beginnings of something happening, you can feel it about to take off. It’s a bunch of free-thinking kids who’ve smoked a little something, maybe popped a few little somethings…and then whaddya know the blues and folk and country and all kinds of music you grew up with sounds a whole lot better if you amp it up and throw some wild licks here and there…maybe let the sound feedback some…the birth of the San Francisco sound of the 60’s. Some minor bumps and bruises with the old tape but it also sounds like it’s right in your living room so the minor hiccups don’t even phase you. Audience 9.1 - A very well done audience tape is the source, and the atmospherics are nice and immersive. Sound quality is right in the pocket! Show was unfortunately cut short due to severe weather, but there’s enough music here to satisfy regardless. They were not exactly shiny and perfect here, getting ready for a tour, so yeah I understand the nature of the tapes and I still like it. Studio 9.2/9.6 - Not a lot to complain about here except maybe just the little bit of tape hiss (unremarkable). I found it interesting to hear the early takes because on some of the tracks it really shows less of the Southern influence and more of the psychedelic influence (listen to their cover of Evil Ways).
