Audience 8.7 - This slightly above average tape sounds like it has been re-mastered and life restored to it, but the mix favors percussion and keys. The rest of the band is a little behind them but thankfully Carlos’ solos rise up above much more in the mix. I did find it an interesting tape with an atmosphere that lets you kind of soak up the Italian vibe – between the chatter and the feel of the venue itself it is kind of strangely…renaissance. Let’s just say the recording captures a little more than just the rock band that evening and it adds a lot to the experience. That is why I can still recommend this to fans, and the fact that it is 1971 which is that interesting period with Neil Schon. Studio 9.0-9.4 - Varies as far as the overall sound and mix but does not stray much below a solid 9.0…but man what you are getting here is bona fide Aerosmith and NOT the dressed up, slicked out, packaged presentation of Aerosmith that the record company needed in order to make vast profits. This is down and dirty, raw, primal, and above all – fantastic! To hear unadulterated guitars, guttural, almost fuzz style bass, and howling, tortured Steven, and this is 1987 mind you! How can it be? I don’t know but this set rocks! Audience 9.1 - Small club vibe permeates this very intimate recording as Al sings his songs with a crack band behind him…often chatting it up with the audience who responds in kind. As I listened, I could not help but think this music really reminds me of Lou Reed, with less bratty New York attitude and more gay San Francisco. Studio Quality 9.8 - Almost as good as could be, a tiny amount of hum only noticeable at the beginning and end of songs…this is almost perfect but it is unmastered studio demos that to my ears sound very close to final mix. Audience 9.3 - Fantastic! Wow, I’d never heard this one previously and it’s a real revelation. Open, great stereo pan, and for once I actually heard the keyboards and I could not even believe some of the little quirky bits that it added to the music. Audience 8.7 - Do not be put off by the rating! This is a very strong 8.7 verging closer to 8.8. Why do I stress that? Because it has a lot going for it, the only black mark I hold against it is due to the lack of distinction between guitars and Paul being pushed back in the sound mix. That being said, it’s more the “mix” of the guitars that leads me to say that, not that you can’t pick each one up. I think I am just being picky though. Audience 9.1 - I love these in your face recordings that are well done. No distortion, max volume, hear every instrument – in fact great separation of the guitars that is so realistic and cool they seem to pan across the speakers! A very well done tape for this time period in that it does not sound like one of those heavily compressed Aiwa tape recordings, it has a lot of liveliness and decent headroom. Audience 8.6 - A tape that has gone through extensive rehabilitation and is now something I can recommend to fans. First off, you no longer have a low volume, crowded tape – this new re-master has the sound panned wider which allowed the muddier channel to be dealt with properly…all the work has paid off because, quite frankly, any 70’s-‘80’s Priest tape needs to be considered as historically valuable, right up to around 1986 IMHO. Effort was made to re-master this tape which ran too fast, so that is now fixed as well. This sounds much better than how it began I can tell you that! SDBRD 9.8 - Fantastic upgrade to what was already a super good tape. Why is it so much better? Transferring off a newly discovered pre-broadcast master, you really can get all the ambience, the background, the crisper highs and deeper lows…all of this adds up to something really special. Even if you already have this, I recommend getting this upgrade version if nothing else just to compare the two. I think this ups the ante significantly. Adrian 1969 & Detroit 1970 Audience 9.1 - Surprisingly good and clear! I was very tempted to call this a board tape but there’s too many artifacts that suggest otherwise…but it’s an amazing find being now the earliest known Amboy Dukes tape. Detroit 1970 Audience 8.6 - The audio is clear but the live mix drowns out vocals. Drums are perhaps the strongest here, followed by the guitar/bass in tandem but I can also hear keys in the mix…so the verdict is that this tape is most welcome and delivers where it is needed even though it is a little rough around the edges.
