Listen to how Mick sounds especially on Shattered – it’s perfect end of story but wait a minute Bill Wyman is actually present and accounted for in a way you never hear. Audience 8.8 - Very clear and leaning towards the mid and upper frequency bands but not in any kind of detrimental way. Supposedly the original source used is a very rare Japanese bootleg LP and that, with a little work done, presents a fine document we can all enjoy. The Reseda 87 material is soundboard with Mick Jagger fronting, and even though the original source features much more material, that is not technically the “live” gig but rather some studio rehearsals which are not present here. Audience 8.5-8.7 - So why the dual rating? Because it is the limitation of the recording equipment that prevents this from earning the solid 8,7 which is a great rating for a long forgotten Ziggy show. So my take on this is that during loud sections, the guitar takes a back seat in the mix while Ziggy is very prominent – which is kind of cool – but during mellower songs (of which there are a few) the mix is much better all around. All in all, this is a pretty good old tape and I don’t think it will disappoint you. Radio Broadcast 8.7 - This is one of the toughest tapes to review because I don’t know what it is, literally I don’t know how they captured this to tape. To my ears it sounds like it was broadcast over the air and someone placed a microphone in front of their stereo speaker and recorded it. Either that or maybe it was broadcast over AM, I just can’t tell you but for sure it’s not as good as a radio broadcast should be, not is it as bad as an amateur audience recording, this one hovers somewhere in between but I still thought it was decent. Someone definitely re-mastered this, and I am 100% sure it was a major benefit. Philadelphia 1983 Audience 8.8 - This tape is very “live” sounding, especially the drums which seem to cascade around your head with Tyler being just slightly above the fray although the enunciation is not that great. Guitars are somewhat in back of things, so really on this tape it’s Tyler and Kramer leading the way in the mix. The good thing about this tape is that it is sharp and clear, the separation of instruments is not so much but at least it’s not muddy. I think Tyler is performing as well as he was capable…take it for what it’s worth but he’s good on this night. Ventura 1983 Audience 9.0 - A really good tape that captures quite the disaster of a gig…poor o’l Steven Tyler – lost his stage mate and now has to carry the weight on his own and man…slow motion train wreck on this night. I think this show is the musical equivalent of rubbernecking ‘cause you just can’t turn away you are drawn like a moth to the flame to hear Tyler royally butcher a rock and roll show. Broadcasts 8.8/9.4 - A little variation depending on the source of the recording in question (all fully annotated in the notes), what you get here is a collection of broadcasts over the air during 1969 and 1970 when music was in full change mode and experimentation and blending of genres was all the rage. Blodwyn Pig certainly has to be included in that product description with their jazz-tinged hard rock akin to Jethro Tull without flute (substitute sax instead). Makes sense, since Mick Abrahams helped define Tull’s sound in the beginning days. This is great stuff though and is HIGHLY recommended. Audience 8.9 - A recording that seems to be, if I had to guess, somewhere mid crowd but manages to bring you closer to the action. Great separation of instruments and a clear capture with zero tape noise so you can almost hear the pot smoke swirling above your head ha ha! But, this is quite good, and mesmerizing, so have a great trip as you put your time machine headphones on and set it to Seattle in ’76. Audience 9.1 - God bless the tapers for this one! What a great show it is, and really I can’t recommend it highly enough because it’s TOTALLY immersive, I mean, sure it’s not 100% perfect but in a way it’s as good as you would hope. It’s a fun experience to hear this man just at the top of his game like this with a band that doesn’t miss a thing, ever. Audience 9.4 - A wonderful, warm, full bodied recording that beckons you in from the first note. Say what you will about Rod Stewart but his voice works with this stuff, and even here in 1982 as long as you can’t see him you can appreciate the rock and roll pedigree he brings to the stage. Yeah, I was rather turned off by his image for quite some time, but hearing him live you just find a way to look past that. Audience 8.7 - I had a hard time determining whether it was the recording or the PA that caused this tape to fall below the usually excellent quality recordings coming out of the Inglewood Forum around this same time. It’s not terrible; the main issue was an overcrowding of the middle bandwidth. So you get plenty of bottom end and soaring high end (where most guitar leads and vocals, and yes, cymbals are clear) but a lack of separation in that crucial middle. That leaves us with a tape clearly made on decent gear, somewhere in the middle of the venue it sounds like, and likely a master source (zero tape noise), but just not delivering the kind of clarity you would want when you are trying to hear the magical guitar interplay, especially Joe Walsh who just has his own musicality that perks your ears up. Still, a good tape that is worthy of exploration and much appreciated being from that wonderful line-up that featured perennial fave Joe Walsh. Audience 8.7 - Not too bad for 1972, this tape has some nice energy, and not to say it doesn’t have limitations, but it seems to deliver a lot more than the expectation. You have to accept that the hall is a touch echoey, or at least the guitar seems to bounce off the wall to give a very short reverb effect. It’s not a distraction at all, in fact it is exactly how it sounded at the show – the recording is very accurate. Audience 9.1 - This show is divided into two sets, with both sounding similar but the 1st set is just a touch rougher in the sense that I hear a tiny bit of channel overload (not distorted!) and less clarity (but not harmfully so) than the 2nd set. Overall, both are very well recorded and I would imagine set 2 was broadcast as this was typical around this time and other Rosyln, NY. “My Father’s Place” shows were indeed broadcast on local FM radio. So, while it seems Set 2 is the better audio (fractionally), I would say it was recorded for broadcast and this is the pre-broadcast tape recorded from the audience with open mics…yes? No? Maybe so? I have no idea…it’s really good but not radio station broadcast good so maybe this show was never recorded for broadcast at all.
