Audience 8.3 - A fun and rowdy crowd who seem to really appreciate the band and their music…a lot! Recording is decent, not particularly detailed but it’s a lot like being thrown into the crowd so you get plenty of enthusiasm near the tapers. I found it to be kind of amusing and not a one and done. A limited edition offering from Houston based ShroomAngel Records. This band was one of the "inner loop" bands that began pushing boundaries in the local scene with their hybrid style, born out of two worlds - the growing "grunge" sound pioneered by Janes Addiction (which you can hear in their sound especially vocals) and Mudhoney among others, but also in old guard punk and hard rock, which you also get reminiscences of in their sound. The music even crosses into some psychedelic territory, it's pretty much an amalgamation of several styles that sometimes adds a sort of exotic feel, but with an anxious, almost paranoid underpinning. -

Soundboard 9.0 - A slightly uneven, but kind of a fun sound mix. You get pretty up front drums, very crisp and focused, and then guitar which is also pretty loud, but vocals are a little behind the music (not completely drowned out) and bass hovers underneath like a viper ready to strike. Audience 8.4 Audience 9.6 Audience 8.6 - I found the ’68 show to be surprisingly strong for the early vintage, a definite surprise even with some hiss present which could theoretically be mitigated with a re-master but you don’t want to sacrifice any highs as they are just hanging on at the upper end. The ’69 is the famous Texas Pop Festival and of course is the best sounding one, and finally the ’70 show which really surprised me, a tad distant from the stage but clear, and I rather enjoyed the live atmosphere. Audience 9.7 - The question you might ask is “do I really need another version of this?” and the short answer is “Hell Yes”. Why? Because technology has advanced to the point where you can take multiple sound sources (in this case four) and merge or “matrix” them together seamlessly to create a sonic tapestry so good it takes your breath away. Soundboard 9.1 - I am kind of doubting whether it is truly a board tape because it doesn’t have that sort of dry and immediate sound, it’s got too much atmosphere. That being said, it is definitely pro, and could be open mics placed strategically around the stage. Sounds great! -

Audience 8.3 - On this tape, you will hear all instruments (guitar out front) pretty clearly, not much crispness but decent bottom end and midrange intact. Slightly muddy in the middle with occasional brighter spots (definite improvement by the beginning of disc 2) throughout as the taper moves into better position. A touch of hiss is present. Not bad, not stellar, I would get it though if you like Rory’s set list during this time (Shadow Play, etc.). Rory Gallagher .... Pro Radio broadcasts 9.0 to 8.8 - Ok, so let me put this into some context: These recordings are incredible and an absolute joy to listen to no matter what vintage they are. These are so historically significant, and the quality is surprisingly good when you consider what had to be absolute mayhem at the shows.
