Studio Quality 9.7 - A lot of collectors may think they are getting the same stuff over and over again in a different package but with the Prince studio collections you really are getting something different, but that might just mean alternate takes, mixes, or a different session with different players. Prince did like to experiment a lot and might want to try a song a hundred different ways before he was satisfied, similar maybe to Jimi Hendrix. I always find something to enjoy and always end up admiring Prince more and more after each listen…which is why I keep offering these titles because it lets me listen to even more Prince! Studio Quality 9.7 - Another fantastic collection of stuff Prince did in his studio and on air with disc 2 being the unreleased Milk and Honey album with Tamar.. What struck me about this particular set is right off the bat, the first track on disc one just blew me away. It’s an extended remix of Computer Blue with the sickest guitar, a real grinding, psychedelic and metallic tone that he squeezes to maximum effect and doesn’t want it to end. Neither did I!! Soundboard 9.6 - A great sound happening here, but what I really love most about it is the brassy, killer bass. Obviously it’s everything, it’s all great, but Prince, even being mainly onto a funky, keyboard, drum, bass approach on this tour (guitar is present in places just not emphasized) which might not be everyone’s cup of tea, still is able to engage this old rock and roller. Audience 8.7 - There is something very special in these amateur audio documents. While you could be overly critical of them for failing to live up to modern sonic standards, the truth is that not only is the audio acceptable as it is, but as a moment captured forever on tape that not only manages to document the entire evening (opening act included) but does so with few blemishes. It's decent quality too, although does not offer extremely dynamic low end or crisp high end, it's a recording that stays mainly in the middle with better definition on guitars which is fine. Audience 8.8 - Another amazing historical document that gives us the entire picture of what it was like to attend a rock concert in Boston in the early 70's. It's one evening out of 365 other evenings in the calendar year but it is a year that I did not get to experience anything like this, being that I was still in elementary school. It's a glaring example of what I was missing! Taper was not only prescient in capturing all the acts but he manages to do so with minimal problems and in very decent quality. Original tape transfers received recent treatment and have never sounded better, it makes me wonder why this material never got picked up by any of the boot labels in Japan or Europe for production. Audience 8.7 - OK, so I totally understand why someone might pass this up- but I think you would be missing something special. It’s an audience recording, very very deep into the crowd, it’s noisy, it’s not fantastic but it is great – now here’s the rub: If you are reading this review, this can be considered a spoiler alert. It took me a complete song before I realized the audience was not a part of the show. The people near the mic sound like they are a part of the stage show, or at least they did to me. I felt like I was in New Orleans but its New York City. I liked this performance, and I tolerate the recording, I came away after listening to this feeling I understood Prince just a little better. After this review I think it’s only fair to warn you – on a few songs the drummer’s high hat sounds like a missile shooting through your speakers – it’s unnerving and I don’t think there’s much you can do but wait for the next song. Audience 9.3 - The second this begins you know it’s gonna be great, and it’s better than great. I’ve heard radio broadcasts that don’t sound as nice as this. I need atmosphere, I want to feel the space around me, the venue itself is a part of the event. Audience tapes of high quality can sometimes deliver more atmosphere than the best soundboard, and sometimes it’s necessary if you want to relive an event to have that atmosphere included in the recording. Audience 8.8 - This is a real surprise, for this early vintage you do not expect anything really good especially out of the Music Hall but I have news for you – this is a good, good tape. Of course it is going to have that almost cavernous kind of quality but regardless it’s a really clear sound and one that shows off each member of the band and offers at the same time a feeling of time and place. Audience 8.8 - I am very thankful this recording exists, so few tapes from around this time that are clean and audible. Now, it gets off to a bumpy start but smoothes out and remains consistent for the duration. It’s taken from I would say the middle of the venue but does not suffer from typical distance recordings. The main P.A. system is strong, so you get a good signal here, all instruments present and accounted for. Vocals remain very much up front in the mix, guitars follow. All in all this is really outstanding and the time period is optimal. Audience 9.5 - This may be a pro audience recording because it has some of the hallmarks of it being managed by someone other than a concert goer. Not saying 100% certain, but it’s just too good and clean, and free of interference but who knows maybe it’s just a really astute taper? All I know is that this material and this quality make for a real revelation for people like me who glossed over the albums. Damn good stuff, with a stellar cast of characters. Same with the San Francisco 1977 tape which I include in this rating but is a soundboard…similar stellar sound quality maybe 9.6 but has a little more hiss present. Still, it is EXCELLENT! Soundboard 9.2 - I think this right here is as good as it will get to a complete Tommy Bolin Purple gig in soundboard quality and, here’s the important thing, reasonably cohesive playing. To be honest, after listening to this, it’s kind of apparent that Deep Purple was probably not the best vehicle for Tommy’s talents. Not that he can’t play, but that Deep Purple’s music was too one dimensional. That being said it is still pretty good despite the erratic mix – sometimes guitar is up front and sometimes it is buried. Audience 9.4 -A fierce sounding tape with major emphasis on Tony, and man, you can hear every nuance of the guitar and it is literally spine-tingling…but at the expense of Ronnie’s vocals. Not to worry too much, I mean, it’s just a badass recording you tend to overlook that. This is well worth listening to I highly recommend it. Austin 2007 Audience 9.6 - Excellent dynamics, strong recording signal that sounds like you are sitting right in front of the band. You can almost make out her diction of lyrics…almost ha ha! A lovely recording. Toronto 2007 Audience 9.1 - A good recording that features nice instrument separation and clarity, it isn’t as round and tight as the Austin show on disc 1 but it’s very strong in its own right. With a recording like this where taper is using high quality equipment, the end result is only as good as the PA sound since that is what your mics capture. In the case of Dio, I am sure they have a multi-million dollar PA system and expert sound engineers at the desk. The live sound is well mixed and powerful. Audience 8.8 - This is NOT the Monsters of Rock show, it’s actually the last DLR (classic era) show and it’s pretty good! It’s not super close up or terribly far from stage, seems to be in a nice spot and everything is clear with decent dynamics. Now, it’s a recording from a rowdy crowd but even with that I felt they did not ruin this or intrude unnecessarily – in fact it seemed they wanted to listen to the band and not hold conversations or stupid hooting and whistling during songs. Audience 8.4 - Unfortunately this is not the best recording. It’s a big stadium, but the flaws are not the typical big stadium flaws of too far away and echoey, rather a preponderance of bass. At times it lets up though, I mean, the rest of the band comes through (vocals being most audible) and you can hear what is going on but you have to round down some of that bass. A mastering job was done, and a lot of the boom was mitigated, and that is nice because this is the one tour that seems to be lacking in decent recordings (Jazz Tour). I’m thinking this one is for Queen completists, but with such nice artwork accompanying this title it’s worth grabbing if there is a discount going on. Audience 9.1 - A good, clean and bright recording that is clear and detailed. Maybe I would say it could use more bottom end but I am nitpicking, it’s got all the essential things a listener needs to be able to “relax” when listening. You don’t have to strain to hear everyone on stage but mix-wise I would place bass and drums more to the back, relatively speaking, on this tape. It's highlighted by a respectful crowd that rarely intrudes while the band is performing but very enthusiastic between songs. Wish I was there.
