Audience 8.3 - This recording is balancing very finely on the borderline but thankfully falls onto the “acceptable” side. I would call it slightly above average maybe, as the tape shows some typical age limitations, but still manages to present the evening in a listenable quality. Audience 8.0 - In this particular case, the rating doesn’t say anything about how amazing this tape is. Sure, it’s not glorious hi-fi with ultra-wide dynamic range, but it is actually much more than that. It’s just, pure magic. Short, yes, it’s not complete by a long shot and I am a little sad we don’t have the rest, but what we do have is proof of why Zeppelin took off after touring the States in ’69. I can’t imagine what people were thinking at this show. They could not have ever gotten anything as monumental as this from any local artist or 2nd tier touring act. This is indescribable; I can’t even find the right words. Page and Plant are killing it, in perfect unison, playing the best live versions of these tunes I think I have ever heard, approaching the majesty of the Fillmore West 4-27-69 but not as clear (obviously). The guitar tone is similar, with that funky echoplex delay sound especially on You Shook Me which launches into another dimension. The sound, at first, you might be dismayed, but stick with it. By the time you get a couple minutes in, you will be mesmerized. It’s an 8.0 that you’ll listen to a few more times for the lesson Page and Plant give in how to hypnotize an audience. Soundboard 9.0 - This recording, to me, sounds like it was in a television studio for a live audience. I can’t tell for sure, but it is the way the audience reacts and the type of reverb going on. Either way, it’s a good recording, first couple of tracks a little hissy but it clears up considerably. Audience 8.7 - This recording sounds like what I always imagined a Stones concert from 1975 would sound like…raw, dirty, and dangerous. How can anyone not like this kind of stuff? It’s just the coolest, really, sitting here and reliving these times. The Stones captured the times in their sound, and their energy is so damn cool, so funky, bluesy, the Stones are rock and roll. Audience 8.8 - A nice surprise this one – I was much more familiar with a tape from a later show during this run, but this one sounds lively and clear as a bell. It has a great live atmosphere which for me is a huge plus, so long as it is not boomy or has too much big hall “verb” and this one has the perfect amount of everything good. Lovely! Audience 8.7 - You are a little deeper in the audience for this show, but it’s a fun ride because the audience at this show is so into it, they know what they are seeing and hearing and the band responds to it by giving one hell of a performance. A touch thin in the bandwidth but it is clearly captured enough to where you will get drawn into it completely. Guitar sounds cool, the atmosphere lends itself well to Frank’s sound here. Soundboard 8.6 - This is a tape of contraries – on the one hand it is very forceful, with a wall of intense guitar/vocal energy with a driving bass pushing the sound through your brain – but it comes at a cost…which is dynamic range. The music is all there, you will even hear piano in the mix, and it’s just kind of lacking overall clarity and dynamics. All that being taken into consideration, what you have here is still a very good piece of history, a fun listen and one that does slightly improve (after the beginning where the sound is still finding its level/mix. Audience 8.8 - This sounds like what the gig probably sounded like, which is why I refer to this as a “capture” as opposed to a “recording”, and I hope you understand what makes the two different. A soundboard is a recording, and to be honest it doesn’t actually “capture” the event, it is what you would have heard if you were running the live sound for the band. Make sense? The only audience recording on this set actually is not that bad, but compared to immaculate soundboard tapes, your ears will need to adjust but you will notice that it is a very good capture with some occasional irregularities with the sound mix where the music gets “further” away (not literally, just something to do with the recording), but overall I think it is ok and worthwhile to enjoy. Soundboard 8.8 - A little bit thin, but it’s clear and of course the guitar is really captured well. Vocals are sometimes in the background here, not that it matters because the all important guitar work is so present you will be more focused on it instead. It is a pretty good performance, it was a good night. I can’t complain about this one, I think it will be appreciated by people even those with only a passing interest in Clapton. It’s a workable board tape nonetheless and it does feature the antics of Pete Townshend and Keith Moon so there is that.
