Everything in this canister sounds very good to great (sdbrd) but I would say disc 1 (the early 1980 show) is the worst sounding, but consequently one of extreme importance. These early Blizzard gigs are the REAL band, and I mean they were a band and not a concoction and not that I have anything against the second iteration, I think this first line-up was badass. This entire set is a joy to listen to, as I stated most of it is very good to excellent quality and going through these important years is a hell of a lot of fun and quite fitting now that Ozzy has performed his final show. The package and art is simply stunning, and befitting of an "unauthorized" tribute to him and his career during the 80's. The set features mostly soundboard tapes but for a few discs that are included for historical reasons (but are not bad, just not soundboards). The first set that will be special to Trower fans is the previously uncirculated Madison Square Garden 1976 show. Wishbone Ash opened, and for both bands it was the first and last time they ever played MSG. Robin Trower performs the song Sailing which to my knowledge is the only time it has ever appeared on tape. The Winterland 1975 show is legendary because Bill Graham Productions preserved the event for posterity on in-house camera systems. The audio is a board feed, but gets off to a rough start with video tape tracking issues (on the master) but thankfully only during the first song. As a bonus, the video itself is included in this set. The show started with an unusual psychedelic "thunderstorm" intro, somewhat reminiscent of the Purple Rain tour interlude. For "Musicology", special guest Will.i.am came on stage and added some freestyle raps. Mr. Dynamite proceeded to give his purple fans a great hot concert and ended the show with a highly-explosive late encore: This was the only main show lasting *past* the 23:00h curfew! One really nice thing about collecting Frank Zappa recordings is the overwhelming majority of them sound very nice. Perhaps that is a testament to Frank's demanding nature, that everything sounds tuned and balanced, I am sure he would not have been indifferent to the stage sound and what exactly his audience was hearing out front. This is why I am confident that you will enjoy every one of the shows in this collection, all recorded from the audience and some even rivaling soundboards in terms of overall enjoyment. A really great recording should transport you to the event, and most of these do just that. I really enjoyed hearing this excellent band Frank put together for this tour, a band that included one Steve Vai, and the chemistry between the two guitarists frequently meant you were in for some real fireworks. 14 CD's worth of fireworks, to be precise. An absolute beast of a canister! Loaded down with 14 discs, it's quite the experience as you follow the Who on tour in the States in 1980. For the most part, all of the recordings reside in the mid to upper 8's on the 1-10 scale, with a couple coming in at over 9.0 (Essen, for instance). I found it to be very satisfying as all of the songs I enjoy hearing them play are represented, without the overindulgence into Tommy...finally!
