Audience 8.5-8.7 - So why the dual rating? Because it is the limitation of the recording equipment that prevents this from earning the solid 8,7 which is a great rating for a long forgotten Ziggy show. So my take on this is that during loud sections, the guitar takes a back seat in the mix while Ziggy is very prominent – which is kind of cool – but during mellower songs (of which there are a few) the mix is much better all around. All in all, this is a pretty good old tape and I don’t think it will disappoint you. Audience 8.7 - This is a fun recording to listen to, sure it’s a bit ramshackle being as if you’ve been tossed into the mosh pit (in 1973 I guess the entire venue resembled a mosh pit full of people too stoned to mosh!), but it’s actually not bad. I imagine by this time the band must realize that glitter and costumes aren’t enough to carry the show when your competition is Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and other bands of that stature. Even if Bowie had anticipated all that by the time of this performance (undoubtedly he did), still the Ziggy Stardust premise seemed to be working well with the audiences as this tape can attest. Audience 8.2 - What was once completely unlistenable has now revealed itself to be a tape that contains music and audible sounds…and sound that can be deciphered easily…although clearly not in any kind of high fidelity. Still what you get from this tape is a VERY obvious indication that Bowie knew where music was headed, and in real time is literally creating a new genre and the audience is in pure ecstasy. Audience 9.4 - This is what you want in a recording made from the audience. It has to be done on excellent equipment, and it has to be in a good spot. This is that, and more. Audience 8.8 - This tape is fascinating! Really gives the listener exactly what they might have experienced attending this concert, a sort of audio time capsule in very good quality but more than that it is LOADED with electric atmosphere. You get a very good sense of time and space. Fantastic! There is one caveat…a microphone drop out does occur towards the end of the show that kind of spoils the flow but it was not something that seemed like taper error so all is forgiven. Audience 8.4 - The quality of the audio is very good, being taped on what sounds like something better than a realistic recorder, but it is somewhat distant from the stage, and consequently a lack of sharpness. So, sound is good on your ears, but maybe sounds like what you would have heard if you were sitting in the upper deck at the Garden. About the sound – the live mix does not favor the vocals much, although audible and not murky they are not front and center – but guitar most certainly is and hurrah for that! Studio Quality 9.4 As expected, these are from studios sessions and having been remastered (to freshen the old tapes up), it sounds quite good. The material sounds a bit dated though, I mean I know it is Bowie but it’s probably not his best stuff in my opinion…some people like it though. David Bowie - Sigma Sound 1974 1. Audience 8.9 - A recording that seems to “rise above” the din because literally it sounds like the mic was over the crowd. It makes for a more immersive experience, and the fact that the dynamics are good and the sound is clear…well it just goes to prove once again that a well made audience tape is more than welcome in any real live music collection.

Audience 9.3 - Technically the sonic quality here is more likely an 8.9 but this tape gets a MAJOR boost because, quite simply, it’s one of the most incredible, insane, unbelievable things Deep Purple I have ever experienced. Audience 8.4 - I think the draw is, when you are dealing with these old audience tapes that don’t have very wide dynamic range, is that as long as you get a solid guitar, and reasonable vocals, it’s going to appeal to collectors because what they want is the performance mainly – and I tend to agree because this is after all the peak period for the band. You can hear guitar, vocals, and keys in pretty decent clarity and forceful too – I see the value in this recording, a little rough around the edges when band is at full flight due to limitations with the recorder, but let me tell you I hung around, listened to the whole thing, and came away satisfied.
