Audience 9.4 - A killer tape with clear and direct sound as if you are right in front of the mains but no distortion or overload. Good balance too. Nice to hear this band live because the few other boots I've heard of them were really bad sounding. Audience 9.7 - This recording is a sonic treat for your ears. The band performs a percussive style of music that is picked up by tapers equipment in a most dynamic way, with beautiful tonal quality, separation of instruments, and atmosphere. A winner! This is the CD only follow up release to the first album by Hooker. These tracks were culled from the bands personal archives and were transferred from the original reels. The time frame spans a period of several years, from around 1978 to approx. 1986. Some of the tracks do feature on the first album, but are going to be alternate versions, mixes, etc. There are also a few live tracks, we concluded those would have been from around 1974 making them some of the oldest surviving recordings of the band.

Soundboard 9.8 - Superb is how I would define this recording. If you have any interest in any of the musicians from Jefferson Starship and Jefferson Airplane than I highly recommend this one. This gig eventually led to the members deciding to go tour. Audience 8.8 - A tape that sounds like it has been extensively worked on to try to bring out the tones and reduce noise. It’s a very old recording that has been preserved as well as could be expected although I feel like it has more life in it. Either way, it’s clean enough, in almost a soundboard way as you don’t hear any atmosphere except between songs where, quite honestly, it sounds like there’s nobody in the “crowd”. Strange. Audience 8.7 - This recording is better than it has a right to be, after all it is in a big stadium, early 70’s so the gear, if it doesn’t weigh 80 pounds, has to be cheap crap…but, dang it this sounds cool! Granted, instrument separation isn’t great (it is good enough), and it isn’t super close up, but all that still does not detract from how stompin’ this is. Great fun! Audience 8.7 - Small club atmosphere but big sound and a taper who thankfully was there to capture it all for posterity…and he did a great job of it. Audience 9.2 - This recording has a special quality to it, it’s not that it’s technically great – the instrument separation isn’t very good but the band does project well – the thing about this tape is it feels like you are sitting just above the audience, in the middle of the room, and you hear the space around you, you have a great sense of where you are and it’s weird but you can visualize this show. I give it a high rating because this recording captures the “essence” of this moment in time in an accurate manner that allows the listener to be transported. Paris 1971 Soundboard 9.6 - Excellent, well balanced mix seemingly made for some kind of professional use but if it was for broadcast than this is certainly a pre-broadcast master source. Frankfurt 1972 Audience 8.8 - A really good tape here, it seems it would have to have been on a reel to reel because it’s too good to be a portable unit with a cheap inboard mic. Soundboard 9.6 - Just like their masterpiece album “ys”, this recording has a sinister, haunting kind of vibe. They pretty much do the entire album, with a couple of non-LP songs included as well (and both are good). Il Balleto Di Bronzo Nearfest 2000 Zoellner Arts Center Bethlehem, PA.
