Audience 8.8 - Every now and then a tape surfaces that really gets you excited as a collector. This one is just such a tape, because for one thing not only is the quality very good, but it’s super nice on the ears. What I mean is, the timbre of the recording is very comfortable, so it’s easy to listen to the entire show there is no fatigue on the ears at all. The icing on the cake is having both opening acts in the same kind of quality, in complete form. So, what more could you ask for? Radio Broadcast 9.2 A touch of hiss present, but other than that this is a pleasant and airy recording. Electronic music with an atmosphere that would convince you otherwise. Excellent! Audience 8.8-9.2 - All seem to be recorded with the same gear but the Marseille show seems maybe slightly upgraded due to either taper position or just better acoustics. Over all this is a highly rated set of shows for the quality of the recordings. The stage mix does vary just a bit as to who is more present, but you hear all the stuff going on as it was live-mixed for the performance (meaning I don’t think taper error caused any lack of presence of, say, synthesizer or guitar on any given performance). The taper used the first song, and in some cases part of the second song to dial in the levels (an indication of really good gear being used) and as such you may notice a volume change, albeit relatively smooth, and once he’s dialed in it is smooth sailing. The performances are sometimes a little hesitant but do gel during instrumental segments much more. I will say this: Mick Taylor is a fantastic player, but I would not call him “progressive” and this music wants to be more prog but it is constrained and maybe that is why it did not blossom much. Audience 9.3 - The great thing about this performer is that his sound and style is timeless – it might as well be 1976 because after listening to his shows from the 70’s, I can’t tell much difference between then and this 1990 show. Audience 9.5 - Thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. The only thing that prevents an even higher rating is some occasional conversation around the taper, not that it ever rises to an infuriating level or anything, but it sometimes calls to your attention. I still can’t figure out the concertgoer who simply cannot focus their attention on the performance they have spent good money on seeing and hearing. Soundboard 9.4 & Audience 8.6 - the first few discs are excellent soundboard which is cool because they are very early performances and there’s a lot to dive into there. The next couple of discs are good audience tapes, the first being a bit towards the back of a medium sized club, but it’s not bad. Overall it’s an interesting collection, really allows you to contemplate the artists changes over time, with band members, and compositions. Good stuff!
