Audience 9.5 - Holy Moly this is RED HOT! The recording is right in your face but not distorted at all. It’s amazing how close this sounds, its super clear too. The only knock I have is that the bottom end is not as beefy as I would prefer. I really wanted more low end punch but if that is the only knock, then you probably should explore this one because not only is it great audio-wise but the playing is off the charts, and I mean seriously Jeff Beck and Stanley Clarke are at the absolute peak of Mount Everest here. Soundboard 9.3 - Very smooth, dynamic, elegant sounding tape here. Just a tiny bit of tape hiss when things are quieter, but this tape is a joy to listen to and the band is just firing on all cylinders. Audience 8.8 - Very clear and leaning towards the mid and upper frequency bands but not in any kind of detrimental way. Supposedly the original source used is a very rare Japanese bootleg LP and that, with a little work done, presents a fine document we can all enjoy. The Reseda 87 material is soundboard with Mick Jagger fronting, and even though the original source features much more material, that is not technically the “live” gig but rather some studio rehearsals which are not present here. Audience 8.8 - The one thing that all the Japanese 78 audience tapes share in common is that the taper is A. Usually recording on some decent gear B. Usually sitting somewhere at least in the middle of the venue and not in the corner against the back wall and C. usually benefitting from quiet, respectful audiences (when they aren’t clapping during the songs as they did for the rock and roll acts of the time, thankfully I guess they afforded Jeff Beck a mostly non-clapping show with a few exceptions). This recording is pretty decent sounding, and I am sure it is going to sound even better once you tweak it to your liking at home. New Haven 1975 Audience 9.0 - Nice one here, a lovely guitar tone that rings out clear and true, so close you can put yourself in tapers seats! Only heard one small drop out, there’s another somewhere else but I don’t recall. Only lasted a few seconds. Either way, this is truly an electrifying tape and I have to say I think it can be considered a must have. Tulsa 1975 Audience 8.6 -A recently re-mastered version has appeared, and thankfully so because this tape suffered serious hiss and muddiness before. Now, there’s some hiss remaining but not near as much, and layer after layer of muck has been removed revealing a fine tape, and a blistering performance. Detroit 1976 Audience 9.1 - Electric atmosphere, almost palpable as you settle into a great show by a guitar master. Band is hot, audience is responding…a great night for rock and roll! Audience 8.9 - One thing for certain, you can’t knock this recording for not having enough wide open and bright atmosphere! Holy crap it’s got that in spades, at maybe at a little expense of the lower register – although the bass is present in a sort of brassy and sassy kind of way. If you want to hear that guitar detail and don’t mind that the recording favors that sort of mid band/upper high range of sound and less emphasis on deep bottom end (most people would prefer not being overloaded with bass as it tends to muddy the sound) than you will like this a lot. I did not miss having phatness in the bottom end because I cranked up my bass on the EQ and lo-and-behold there was bass! Audience 9.2 - Both shows represented here are very similar and probably done by the same crew, in roughly the same vicinity because both are close to the P.A. (and not distorted!). In fact, both are exactly the kind of audience tapes I like the most – brutally powerful with just enough atmosphere to get the feel of the day. When I say powerful, I mean this stuff is comin’ at ya! Love it to death! Audience 8.6 - I don’t quite know what to make of this tape – it is very clear but with some kind of slight crispness in the middle to high band that suggests the microphone being used was not up to the task. That being said, it’s still a pretty good recording, and with a class mic it would have been a 9.0 or better. Well worth getting, that is my final assessment. Audience 8.7 - A solid recording, some flaws including tape noise that lurks in the background at all times but only really makes its presence known when music is very quiet. Middle frequencies get just a touch crowded, still it is pretty clear, this is a very good, but not great, recording. Audience 9.0 - This is a very good recording that delivers most of what you need, but for someone who perhaps understands the nuances of sound they may have wished for hearing this from a little bit closer with more clarity. That is nitpicking though – I think this sounds very very decent. The main attraction is Jeff Beck’s guitar playing and Johnny Depp’s accompaniment and you get that all very nicely. Audience 9.2 - This recording is very clean and very bright, it does not favor the bass but what you’ll find is that the guitar sounds like it’s right next to you (which for the taper maybe it was).
