Audience 8.8 - This old tape is fascinating, and frustrating. The “DJ” is a guy who seems to work for a local radio station who somehow got to broadcast this show – but my spidey sense says it’s not actually what went down. This is a ruse to get the tape machine into the venue, I am willing to bet money on it. So, he’s in the venue but to keep up appearances he does station ID’s periodically (almost every song) and because of his cheap recorder, the station id he does just sounds like a loud sonic swoosh (thankfully they are real short). Zep are in good form but fight constantly against poor PA which makes for a very interesting evening and a unique tape. One thing I want to point out is that because of the weird PA problems, it seems Page is getting much more feedback than normal and it causes him to sound much more psychedelic and I actually enjoyed that very much. Audience 8.5 - We all are aware that this tape is not spectacular quality, it does what it needs to do and that is present a document of a great evening for Led Zeppelin. It’s quite magical in many respects, and really I think the quality is not disappointing considering some re-mastering of the tape has been done and it helps. Still this is worth having for history and for how good the band is playing. Audience 8.0 - In this particular case, the rating doesn’t say anything about how amazing this tape is. Sure, it’s not glorious hi-fi with ultra-wide dynamic range, but it is actually much more than that. It’s just, pure magic. Short, yes, it’s not complete by a long shot and I am a little sad we don’t have the rest, but what we do have is proof of why Zeppelin took off after touring the States in ’69. I can’t imagine what people were thinking at this show. They could not have ever gotten anything as monumental as this from any local artist or 2nd tier touring act. This is indescribable; I can’t even find the right words. Page and Plant are killing it, in perfect unison, playing the best live versions of these tunes I think I have ever heard, approaching the majesty of the Fillmore West 4-27-69 but not as clear (obviously). The guitar tone is similar, with that funky echoplex delay sound especially on You Shook Me which launches into another dimension. The sound, at first, you might be dismayed, but stick with it. By the time you get a couple minutes in, you will be mesmerized. It’s an 8.0 that you’ll listen to a few more times for the lesson Page and Plant give in how to hypnotize an audience. Soundboard 9.1 -Always nice to hear these 1980 shows in this quality. There is something I really like about the later era Zep – a maturity maybe? I don’t know but I think the band really smokes here. Audience 8.4 – 8.7 - A tape that has its share of strengths and flaws. The strengths are that at times it is pretty good, maybe comparable to the Raleigh 70 tape, but other times (such as during Dazed and Confused) the tape shows it has flaws due to age and although these aren’t egregious, they are clear and present and do effect the flow of the concert. For example the audio during Dazed has a speed fluctuation problem that is annoying. The problem stays through the next track but clears up after that and the sound improves dramatically. It is here that the tape shows it has considerable value! Yes, a great find after all. Two versions of the show are represented with both being similar, the different being in how each was re-mastered so it is up to the listener really. I liked the first re-master (CD1) personally. Audience 9.8 - It’s hard to find anything that is quite as marvelous as this…seriously. You can take all your pristine board tapes and none of them come close to capturing the essence of Led Zeppelin on stage in front of an audience. This is simply a MUST HAVE no matter how many shows you have in the collection (certainly you already have this anyway) but get this one again because it’s been recently transferred from the original cassette masters and given the treatment. This could easily come out officially. BRILLIANT!!! Audience 9.7 - The question you might ask is “do I really need another version of this?” and the short answer is “Hell Yes”. Why? Because technology has advanced to the point where you can take multiple sound sources (in this case four) and merge or “matrix” them together seamlessly to create a sonic tapestry so good it takes your breath away. Audience 8.4 - An incredibly loud tape, bordering on catastrophe but not quite going over the red line of doom. What I mean is, the tape is just way overloaded, but it hangs together miraculously just enough to be able go ahead and listen through…although at times it’s so intense you just have to turn the volume down a bit. Now, when you get to, say, The Rain Song – yeah, the tape shines…it’s just that kind of tape. NOTE: After the tape flip in Rain Song, the taper seems to have been able to dial down the recording level a little bit, it seems to get a little more manageable. Audience 8.6 - A new tape to circulation and a most welcomed one. It’s certainly quite different and for Zep collectors will be analyzed incessantly and be shown as a “keeper” for many reasons. Sound quality is a little hissy but surprisingly clear and without mud. Dynamically it’s not going to shatter any records but let me tell you for what this is, it offers a fascinating window into a hard-working touring band making yet another tour stop in some out of the way, random Scandinavian town nobody has ever heard of. Audience 8.7 - A show I remember listening to as a teenager having bought the 3LP bootleg which was referred to as Offenbach. This sounds pretty close to that boot, maybe a touch better coming from a tape source, which means it’s pretty decent. Audience 8.6 - A very decent recording that may be slightly distant but is real clear and not boomy, rather there is a pretty inviting bottom end and sharp highs – it’s the middle frequency that is not as present which is not generally the case. The taper is in the brawling midst of the action on the floor and you really do feel a part of their excitement during the concert. I would say this is kind of immersive in that sense, and not annoyingly so either. A fun tape, I was sucked into it at times and could not extract myself. Audience 8.5 - Do not judge this show by the first song, just skip past it in fact. Tape gets MUCH better and is rather enjoyable, good presence on the guitar and Plant doesn’t even need a P.A. but show does end prematurely as Robert has a little issue with staying conscience. Audience 7.7 - Distant and hissy, but Plant somehow can still be the loudest instrument in the building. Should you get this?
