These recordings are going to probably melt your speakers, the levels are really pushed all the way up just to the breaking point. Still, to my ears I like what I am hearing. Audience 9.5 - Yes, this is all audience recordings but the quality is impeccable. The guitar is simply SUPREMELY badass, if you are on the fence about Prince, do yourself a favor and dive into this one because no matter what your bias might be about the man, you can’t deny the power and finesse that this music demonstrates. Audience 8.8 - Certainly a decent sounding tape, the band sounds a lot more grunge-like than glam pop here which is a good thing. The PA sound mix is off for a bit, with the Third Eye Girl guitar being buried in favor of Prince’s lead guitar role which hurts the interplay (as in the jam during Let’s Go Crazy) but as it goes they seem to get a little better with that. Prince recorded a lot of these tunes several times with different combinations and different mixes and that explains why you will see these tracks popping up on different collections. Radio/TV Broadcasts 9.4 - I have learned to trust most Prince titles now, generally speaking there is great care taken to preserve the fidelity, to obtain master sources, and to package appropriately. That seems only fitting when dealing with an artists’ of Prince’s caliber…and I mean that most sincere. The list of contents for this title is extremely long and extensive and I did not write it up. Audience 9.1 - Atmospheric, where even if it may be recorded from somewhere in the middle, the immersive experience has been well captured. Vocals sound lush and full, and percussion is crisp and well defined with a nice, rounded bottom end holding it all down. This is a decent recording that allows the listener to imagine where they are sitting and how the event sounded, the actual P.A. sound. Audience 9.0 - Recorded in the middle of a whole lot of fun but retains a nice focus on the music throughout. When you listen, you begin to fully kind of appreciate the aspects of an audience tape that soundboards simply don’t provide – there’s an immersive quality to it, as long as the audio fidelity is good you can relive the concert through the taper and his position in the audience. Then in spots, especially crowd (but some boards get bleed from stage mics) but certainly during hand claps it gives it away. It’s a really sweet recording for sure, and just sublime playing all over the place. It is a professional recording with a lot of issues concerning compression and noise – I say it is pro because of the location this is being recorded from which seems definite it is not from the audience.
