Audience 9.4 - Beautiful and well balanced, this taper was well known to have produced consistently high quality work in the area taping a variety of concerts big and small. Band was opening for Badfinger, and this is the earlier of the two performances that day. This is one of the only extant live recordings of Big Star playing in the ‘70s that has not been officially released. Boston 1981 FM Broadcast 9.0 This is not bad, I detected maybe a little trace of signal interference but not enough to destroy this audio. It may be kind of like a background “fuzziness” or something but I find this to be a very good representation especially being a crowd that knows the music and the band very well. I think the band responds and delivers an exceptional performance. San Francisco 1981 FM Broadcast 9.4 Very strong in every category, a recording with depth and a band that delivers the goods. London 1981 Audience 8.8 A decent tape with maybe a little “crunchiness” to it but overall it rates well and can be thoroughly enjoyed. FM Broadcast 9.7- Brilliant sound, and so nice to have this because you get the full on experience with a great band and the great back up vocals of Ruby Starr (I honestly would not have minded at all for her to be the singer and Jim the washboard player and back up singer!). Audience 9.3 - This is what I would call a definitive release in that I think if you wanted to know what Sabbath was in ’87 you can use this as a reference. For one thing, it sounds great – and another reason is because it sounds like the band is doing what it had in mind with the line-up and sound. A new direction maybe, but in the same way that maybe Technical Ecstasy was also a new direction. It’s still Sabbath, the bone structure is all there, but the smile has changed…and it has a place in the discography. Audience 8.8 - Easily one of the best audience recordings of the tour. Very close to the main P.A. system on Tony’s side of the stage, this puts Ozzy a little in the background but not so much he cannot be heard reasonably well. It’s just, well, it’s the sheer POWER on display by the band that makes this one so special and that the recording manages to deliver that without glaring problems (and in 1973, wow!) is a miracle. Reading 1983 FM Broadcast 9.3 - I can’t say for sure if this was broadcast or not but it does sound like one of those recordings that ended up over the air. Why? I don’t know it just has that kind of feel to it, and for that reason this should get repeated plays because it’s simply excellent. Black Sabbath U.I.C. Chicago 1975 Audience 8.7 A strong tape showcasing Tony for sure as he comes through loud and clear. Ozzy is next in the sound mix followed by somewhat indistinct bass and drums in that they are not detailed, but they are still present as the power of the band is transferred to the tape – this is not a “transistor” radio recording by any means. Very enjoyable! Baltimore 1975 Audience 8.8 This tape is great although it is slightly subdued, but the live sound mix is extremely brutal, you really get a good feel for how powerful this band’s sound was at the time. I wish it was a little bit clearer maybe, but as this show plays you are so sucked into it you really don’t feel critical because it’s a devastating and great ’75 performance. San Bernardino 1975 Audience 9.2 A very open and bright recording that, even with some limitations of the analog tape being used, rates very high for the sheer excitement and power being displayed and thankfully captured so well. I also love the visceral audience reactions (especially when War Pigs gets going), seriously it gave me goose bumps! Love this! Audience 8.7 - A somewhat subdued tape that begs for increased volume, which actually may be fine if you have a nice pre-amp…or just turn this up and get down because it isn’t bad. One thing I do appreciate about this tape is that Tony Martin is probably the clearest out of everything, then maybe Iommi and especially his lead work which really rings out. All instruments are present, I think this tape is a keeper. Audience 8.4 - A middle of the road stadium recording that is quite clear but not very close. That being said, I found much to appreciate from this one – namely the curious line-up at this time. Tony Martin singing, ok, he is decent enough and certainly professional caliber but to me, this just is not Black Sabbath. It’s a really badass metal band with Tony Iommi on guitar. This recording does allow you to really hear both Tony’s pretty loud and clear. Audience 8.4 - So, first the good news. This recording is much better than the Dublin ’83 show. Why is that significant? Because there are precious few live recordings of any kind of quality highlighting this short lived period with Gillan. I don’t know about you, but I think this material and the sound of the band during this time period is just awesome. I really would have loved more of this…but alas it was not meant to be. The downside is that the recording is mainly from Geezer’s side of the stage, so you are going to get an earful of Geezer, and that is not a deal breaker but what sucks is that Tony sounds weak in comparison. Another upside? You can hear Ian Gillan over the wall of sound, and therein lies the main reason why this tape deserves a listen. Will it get repeated plays? Probably not…but I was happy to be able to get another chance to hear Ian Gillan live with Black Sabbath and I am better for it.
