FM Broadcast 9.1 - A board tape that seems to have a more ambient quality to it, meaning it sounds like close mic’ing rather than direct into board. That means you do not hear the audience as is typical of a board tape, but you do get a “room” sound like the quality of an audience tape, albeit a very good one. This is a real good tape but it does sound somewhat dated and thankfully the remastered version (this one) brings more clarity and punch than before. Audience 8.7 - A somewhat crude tape that manages to still present some meat you can savor. The slightly overloaded tape can still allow everything to be heard although drums are not very distinct (cymbal washes do clear the mix because they sit in the high band range) and neither are the vocals - but here's the saving grace: The guitar is present and accounted for and you really NEED that with this band because this guy is phenomenal. Radio Broadcast 9.1 - A rare find, this is a band that can be best defined as an eclectic, world music progressive band that features some ethnic style music that occasionally fuses in some nice, tasty jazzy electric guitar rock stylings. Atlanta 1977 Audience 8.6 - At times the tape shines (quieter sections) but for the louder parts (most of the concert) the bass overtakes guitar, and the bass is not boomy so it is not an annoying thing it’s more of a live mix thing. Clarity is very good but not great, frequencies are all intact here, the sound can breathe a little, it’s not a bad tape and it is not a great tape…and I think the consensus is that you would benefit from having it in the collection. Louisville 1977 Audience 8.7 - The sound here borders on distortion but manages to stay within a sane level of tolerance due to exceptional re-mastering (which is so difficult, to keep highs and mids but lose clipping, it’s a task I would not want myself). If taper was able to manage his levels, this would have been one of the best audience tapes of all time…you can hear the quality, but yeah, some problems there with the upper level distortion keep it as a very good tape as opposed to extremely great. Still, I have to say this is well worth having. Milwaukee 1977 Audience 8.2 - This is the kind of tape that is hard to get through without needing some major adjusting. I can tell you only that even after careful re-mastering, it is still an average tape with some decent moments but mostly difficult on the ears. It’s saving grace? It’s a brand new discovery, and is only popping up for the first time since it was first recorded. I enjoyed the quieter parts (such as Wish You Were Here, and the acoustic portions of the Pigs suites). Audience 8.8 - A recording where the audience does get some attention but not in an obnoxious way, just in an enthusiastic way which sometimes adds to the excitement...but for some it might be a distraction. I didn't mind it, there really wasn't a particular audience member who yelled stupidly right into the mic. Thankfully the band is pretty reasonably clear, most of the time. I think there is room in your collection for this one, which won't be the best Animals show, but it certainly won't be the worst. Audience 8.7 - This is a very good recording that only needs more definition in the highs, but I still think this has to rank high in the pantheon of 1971 audience tapes. It’s a show that seems to invoke an almost reverential vibe in the audience, as they are quiet and respectful throughout but show bursts of appreciate at song endings. A good one, in many respects. Audience 9.5 - a legendary recording that has been carefully treated by sensitive ears not wanting to revise history but to bring out every possible nuance, and succeeding. One to have for sure. The second show is also great, ranking a solid 9.2 but also well worth diving into.

Audience 8.9 - This sounds WAY much better than I remember it sounding, but then I first heard this show about 25 years ago so I guess it’s quite possibly a new source or an amazing remastering. Either way, this is certainly VERY worthy of appearing in your collection as it captures that open air festival vibe, and the band…Gilmour is inspired as his solos pierce the air with ferocity and guile. Bass sounds right on point here, and drums are perfectly balanced and placed in the mix just behind the others so to give those sounds center stage. Keys are much more present during the quieter passages, but they have a nice feel to them. All in all, this is great great great stuff. Audience 8.6 - This is an untouched, raw transfer straight from the reels, and as such it will sound like it could be MUCH better sonically with some professional sound re-mastering. Many people will no doubt want to hear it as it was recorded, and it is good, it’s really pretty good, but what I would prefer is a sonic facelift because I think this one really deserves it. It’s still a great show. Audience 7.8 - The venue had a pool in front of the stage, so it stands to reason audience taping had to be midway back making for a not so great sound quality although listenable (not distorted, not horribly muddled) and historic (a unique venue that played host to top tier artists in their prime). The tapers sound like a couple of English gents speaking throughout the show in their proper English which makes for a fun commentary of the show…I mean, it’s half the fun of this recording! A neat little piece of rock history here. Not essential, but kinda neat. Audience 8.7 - Here is a good argument for why we should be open minded towards audience tapes. You NEED some atmosphere! I want to re-experience the show, that means I want to hear it as it happened, not sterilized and filtered. I like board tapes too, but we need a balance. This recording allows me to participate with the audience and be there with them in the moment, and hear the band from out front of the stage. It’s clean, and I hear all the instruments well placed, and reasonably dynamic with just the right amount of headroom so we don’t go pegging the meters. I really like this tape, you will too. Audience 8.8 - Some people list this as a soundboard, and if you heard the music right off you might think that too, but the audience applause gives it away as an audience tape, albeit a damn fine one. Plenty of atmosphere, and pretty solid dynamics (lush and deep bass, clear guitar, present vocals). Great version of Astronomy Domine (still performed live during the early part of 1970).
