Audience 8.7 - This slightly above average tape sounds like it has been re-mastered and life restored to it, but the mix favors percussion and keys. The rest of the band is a little behind them but thankfully Carlos’ solos rise up above much more in the mix. I did find it an interesting tape with an atmosphere that lets you kind of soak up the Italian vibe – between the chatter and the feel of the venue itself it is kind of strangely…renaissance. Let’s just say the recording captures a little more than just the rock band that evening and it adds a lot to the experience. That is why I can still recommend this to fans, and the fact that it is 1971 which is that interesting period with Neil Schon. Soundboard 9.4 - A nice, low gen board from what I consider the apex of this band. In fact I would say my favorite live Santana originates from the Lotus era. I will say this mix does highlight percussion in a way that you hear cymbals and other instruments in a different aural space, almost in stereo as they seem to phase across the speakers and sometimes may even give you the feeling you are hearing tape hiss but alas it is actually residual crash cymbal sounds and maracas. Interesting. Soundboard 8.8 - A less than perfect board tape as far as the overall timbre, and the mix itself. I found this tape to resemble maybe a really good AM broadcast, but perhaps that is too harsh! It’s not bad, I just personally found it to be lacking some “punch”, although it is clear, it’s a board tape so there will be a built in appreciation for the “closeness” of the sounds. Soundboard 9.6 - This tour was well documented with a plethora of expertly recorded board tapes. This is no exception, the quality, both in terms of sound and mix, is worthy of official release. Soundboard 9.4 - This is great, not only a very good, strong and clear board tape but also a superb performance by everyone. There is one small caveat here, starting at Bambele and extending through 5 more songs there is the presence of tape hiss (not too bad during the songs but very noticeable when quiet) which was probably the result of the engineer using a tape brand different to whatever he used for the rest of the show which has no tape hiss at all. Soundboard 9.0 - A good, strong board tape, and a typically high quality Santana performance. This tape has been given a little facelift to reveal better dynamics, less hiss, and more depth in the bottom end, and high mids attenuated to make for a smooth, comfortable listening experience. Soundboard 9.7 - All excellent, all must haves imho. What you get sound-wise is a rich, deep tone, the Berlin tape in particular which features emphasis on the bass which is massive but detailed. The music here is more progressive than Samba, and Carlos does sometimes resort to familiar guitar runs but he also flashes a lot of other tricks and convinces the listener that he’s not a one-trick pony at all. Best I can tell here is that Devadip Ochestra is a decent attempt to take what Mahavishnu Orchestra did and accent it in different ways. Well done Carlos!

Radio Broadcast 8.8 - One thing that I really appreciate about this recording is how you can hear a real separation between bass and guitars. This is not typical of a heavy metal concert recording unless recorded and mixed for a specific purpose, such as a broadcast. So, while the sound itself might tend to be on the "brassier" side - it's not a knock...it's a way of trying to describe how there's plenty of bass but not necessarily in the form of that typical metal low end boomy sludge sound. Audience 8.7 - A VERY powerful recorded sound coming out at you like a hurricane. Thankfully this tape holds together, although it sounds like it’s going to tear apart any second – it’s quite a frantic recording if I can describe it that way. You are like placed in front of the mains, and surprisingly you can hear everybody, especially Klaus who sounds BRILLIANT as does the entire band. Minden 1973 Audience 8.8 - One of the earliest concert recordings ever sourced! It sounds very good, decent equipment used, and maybe placed a little back in the club but otherwise it’s a lot better than it has a right to be. The band certainly evolved quite a bit from these early club days, but the character of the band never did. Fascinating document! Minden 1974 Audience 9.4 - What a difference a year makes, as the band return to the same club a year later and wreck the place! Extremely tasty, the recording does the band justice as it literally just leaps out of the speakers with maximum ferocity while retaining enough detail and depth to let you sit and listen in total awe. Fucking hell this is good!
