Audience 8.6 - Surprisingly decent, it’s got some “rattle and bones” but overall it is highly listenable with a good timbre to it. Anything from this period is welcome, and this old tape has not only survived the decades intact but delivers on the enjoyment meter considerably. The bonus tracks vary but are generally pretty good quality with the tell-tale sound of vinyl ever present throughout. No attempt was made to clean it up, this is due to the sensitive nature of the high end on these recordings, it would seem any real noise reduction or cleaning would compromise that. Audience 9.1 - This show is divided into two sets, with both sounding similar but the 1st set is just a touch rougher in the sense that I hear a tiny bit of channel overload (not distorted!) and less clarity (but not harmfully so) than the 2nd set. Overall, both are very well recorded and I would imagine set 2 was broadcast as this was typical around this time and other Rosyln, NY. “My Father’s Place” shows were indeed broadcast on local FM radio. So, while it seems Set 2 is the better audio (fractionally), I would say it was recorded for broadcast and this is the pre-broadcast tape recorded from the audience with open mics…yes? No? Maybe so? I have no idea…it’s really good but not radio station broadcast good so maybe this show was never recorded for broadcast at all. Radio Broadcast 9.5 - Sparkling! This is THE one to have in my opinion – the sound is really good and very vibrant. This one does not disappoint in the quality dept. despite being pretty friggin’ loud and close to taper…almost crosses over the line pegging the meters into distortion but it doesn’t…it would have been a total loss if it had. Record Plant 1974 Studio Quality 9.6 - Great way to listen to the artistry of Steely Dan – a great band live and in the studio. It will sound much worse than it is if you listen to disc one first (normal operating procedure) but I have to say this recording is still worth having for fans of Steely Dan as they did not tour much and so there's only so much from 1974. Audience 8.5 - At first it’s a little over-driven and very harsh but it all smoothes out and becomes an astonishing document…still rather crude but powerful and all instruments are heard. I was transfixed by this, by the band’s tightness and such excellent guitar! Wow, to have been there… Disc two is a very rare document of the John Kay Band opening for Steppenwolf in 1972 and is also very good…and very Steppenwolfy as you could imagine. Central Park 1971 Audience 8.6 - The limitations of this tape are mainly the over-riding level of tape his present, although it’s been re-mastered to the degree that much was removed without sacrificing highs. The actual recording is not bad, and even with some hiss, the tape does not sound like it is multiple gens down. Highs are good, lows are present, mix is not terrible (guitars are somewhat low, but this is a live mix situation and not the taping). Copenhagen 1972 Audience 8.8 - A very clear tape with an emphasis on high end crispness (not brittle or irritating, just very clear in the high end), mix favors vocals, drums, then keys and guitars in the same range. An enjoyable tape! Audience 8.6 - In contrast to the Finland show, this one doesn't have the boominess but it is thinner sounding, however it is very clear and Kay is much more audible. Guitar, drums, and vocals very clear albeit thin. I found the bass to be lovely, round, very cool to hear such detail! This is NOT a muddy recording, and being 1970 that means you get the classic songs performed close to the records. Fillmore East 1970 Soundboard 8.8 - Clear although not bristling with perfection is a very good early period SMB recording Honolulu 1970 Soundboard 8.8 - A tape that needs one song to dial in the live mix but then gets much better. Still, it’s very good but not sparkling and bright…just good enough to rank pretty high in the category of the formative Steve Miller anthology of concert tapes. San Rafael 1970 Soundboard 9.1 - This is a really nice recording that exemplifies why it is so cool to hear tapes of an artists’ earlier career works before they made it to the big time. This certainly shows the vulnerability and the possibility at the same time. An artist who is still not 100% convincing but clearly has the tool set necessary to advance…and advance he did!
