Audience 9.0 -A lovely, intimate sounding show. Now, don't get me wrong, there seems to be a large audience but the quality of the capture feels smaller, closer, warmer than your average midsize venue. -

OK City - Soundboard 9.6 - Excellent from the start, with a great tonal quality that brings out tremendous detail in the guitar. This board tape manages to not sound like a "bored" tape! New York - Soundboard 9.4 - A more toned down, warmer sound than the OKC, this board tape focuses on the band as a whole. The sound is full, rich, and inviting which presents the listener a choice: do you like the more "live" sound or do you prefer an almost "studio" like quality in a live recording? I would opt for a healthy combination of both I suppose.

Audience 8.7 - Almost every recording from this venue sounds like a large, cavernous venue no matter where the taper is sitting. Thankfully this one is not as much, and the music is just that much more immediate and clear, so for this venue I would say this tape shines. Audience 9.1 - A very well done audience tape is the source, and the atmospherics are nice and immersive. Sound quality is right in the pocket! Show was unfortunately cut short due to severe weather, but there’s enough music here to satisfy regardless. Soundboard 9.0 - The unmistakable emphasis in this mix is the percussion (and to a lesser extent keyboards) but that makes for an interesting take on this one…you are forced to reckon with the powerhouse engine room for once, and with no regrets either. It’s still a good recording, and everyone else is there but you will know who’s taking the stage in the mix here. Audience 9.0 - A little bit further away from the stage than the typical Mike “The Mic” recording, nonetheless it’s solid and worthy of the collection. Soundboard 9.4 - Clear and bold (especially percussion) capturing a very fine creative period of the band (the dual guitar with Neal Schon being especially notable). I did notice a slight amount of distortion in the lower frequencies but it's barely noticeable. The mix does change towards the end of No One To Depend On and a lot of the boominess and excessive volume is dialed back so it mitigates any distortion present. SANTANA Denver Coliseum Denver, CO. Soundboard 9.1 - A somewhat dated sounding tape (a touch of hiss, and a very slight amount of distortion on the cymbals during at least the first 20 minutes as the soundman dials it in) but it is a treat to hear these songs in such good quality. My review is subjective, I think it's a fine recording but I have to nitpick seeing as there's a very steady supply of Santana soundboards. Audience 9.6 - Stunning! It’s bright and clear and super dynamic with a palpable sense of positional awareness as you can hear the sound envelope you and the waves of excitement washing over the audience in seemingly 360 degrees. I take this over any soundboard tape any day of the week. Audience 8.7 - This slightly above average tape sounds like it has been re-mastered and life restored to it, but the mix favors percussion and keys. The rest of the band is a little behind them but thankfully Carlos’ solos rise up above much more in the mix. I did find it an interesting tape with an atmosphere that lets you kind of soak up the Italian vibe – between the chatter and the feel of the venue itself it is kind of strangely…renaissance. Let’s just say the recording captures a little more than just the rock band that evening and it adds a lot to the experience. That is why I can still recommend this to fans, and the fact that it is 1971 which is that interesting period with Neil Schon. Soundboard 9.4 - A nice, low gen board from what I consider the apex of this band. In fact I would say my favorite live Santana originates from the Lotus era. I will say this mix does highlight percussion in a way that you hear cymbals and other instruments in a different aural space, almost in stereo as they seem to phase across the speakers and sometimes may even give you the feeling you are hearing tape hiss but alas it is actually residual crash cymbal sounds and maracas. Interesting. Soundboard 8.8 - A less than perfect board tape as far as the overall timbre, and the mix itself. I found this tape to resemble maybe a really good AM broadcast, but perhaps that is too harsh! It’s not bad, I just personally found it to be lacking some “punch”, although it is clear, it’s a board tape so there will be a built in appreciation for the “closeness” of the sounds.
