Audience 9.5 - You can relax into this show, it's occupying a very pleasant space when the soundwaves wash over you and you begin to have a sense of the size of the venue, the space around you, and the distance from the stage. That's what I like about smaller venue recordings, and modern taping gear is getting so much better with the mic technology and level adjust that it's really hard to screw it up. SDBRD 8.8 - A rollicking good time is what you are going to get here, maybe not the ideal sound mix (although it gets better), but this is a band that despite all outward appearance is quite talented musically (and seem to be quite natural performing live on stage). You will love the music and even the on stage banter…perhaps this band was the role model for Steel Panther? Ha ha! Audience 8.9 - This tape gets the nod for being a well-captured piece of music at a time when music was seeing significant change. One of those change bands, beginning in the 2nd half of the 70's, was Talking Heads and they remained at the forefront for quite a few years. This tape shows why...it's got a very realistic feel to it and the band sounds confident. Soundboard 9.2 - Strong and clear as a board should be, but probably not mixed for a live album release, more for front of house sound which explains the interesting way the two guitars are panned…I rather like it. This allows you to really get the musicality of the performance and that is where this tape literally takes off. The playing is top shelf and worthy of paying serious attention to. On a side note, every now and then there will be a tape problem that resolves itself right away and I think this is present on the master. It is not a deal breaker at all, it happens few and far between. Audience 8.8 - This is one of those tapes that requires high volume to really bring out the flavor. It’s good, in fact the louder you go the better it is, which is in itself quite nice. Soundboard 8.9 - Mixed for television broadcast, the sound is a little better than your average videotape source audio in that it is not nearly as compressed sounding. Vocals are mixed hotter than normal but not too bad, some occasional channel disturbances that last seconds and are resolved and are few and far between so overall this is a real good one. Soundboard 9.3 - What you would expect from a direct to tape from the mixing console recording. It's super clear and clean and every instrument in a place where it's easily distinguishable, but don't assume it's just a dry, lifeless thing 'cause it ain't. It's not mixed for a release of any kind, but as a reference, so there's nothing to tame the Wildman when he's on the microphone - and that's the life of the party right there. Pro Audience 9.1 - More than likely this was recorded for broadcast, but it's not a soundboard, or, perhaps it is a close/distance mic'd job because it is definitely not from the audience. It's probably a stage mic placement, that is about all I can decipher because while it is not quite up to prime time for a pristine radio broadcast, it is the next best thing in that you get more atmospherics than a straight board recording. Soundboard 9.8 - It's been a blast hearing all these killer Nuge board tapes that have surfaced recently. This one is a rip-roaring beast, within the first three minutes you know your going to just get annihilated. Upper Darby 1975 Audience 8.7 - This is not an easy one to pull off – you have to give a lot of credit to this taper as he’s trying to capture an excessively loud and aggressive rock band in a smallish club. That means you’d better be in a good spot with a tape machine that can prevent distortion due to high volume. Taper got those two essentials right. What is the flaw then? I would say unless you are super picky, you really will understand the value of this tape. Good sound quality, you hear everything (both guitars clear!), drums, bass even! So it isn’t board tape perfect, but I think this rare 1975 audience tape belongs in every fan’s collection. It is that good. Central Park 1975 Soundboard 9.8 - What a thrill this is!
