It’s bright and clear and super dynamic with a palpable sense of positional awareness as you can hear the sound envelope you and the waves of excitement washing over the audience in seemingly 360 degrees. Audience 8.7 - This slightly above average tape sounds like it has been re-mastered and life restored to it, but the mix favors percussion and keys. The rest of the band is a little behind them but thankfully Carlos’ solos rise up above much more in the mix. I did find it an interesting tape with an atmosphere that lets you kind of soak up the Italian vibe – between the chatter and the feel of the venue itself it is kind of strangely…renaissance. Let’s just say the recording captures a little more than just the rock band that evening and it adds a lot to the experience. That is why I can still recommend this to fans, and the fact that it is 1971 which is that interesting period with Neil Schon. Soundboard 9.4 - A nice, low gen board from what I consider the apex of this band. In fact I would say my favorite live Santana originates from the Lotus era. I will say this mix does highlight percussion in a way that you hear cymbals and other instruments in a different aural space, almost in stereo as they seem to phase across the speakers and sometimes may even give you the feeling you are hearing tape hiss but alas it is actually residual crash cymbal sounds and maracas. Interesting. Soundboard 8.8 - A less than perfect board tape as far as the overall timbre, and the mix itself. I found this tape to resemble maybe a really good AM broadcast, but perhaps that is too harsh! It’s not bad, I just personally found it to be lacking some “punch”, although it is clear, it’s a board tape so there will be a built in appreciation for the “closeness” of the sounds. Soundboard 9.4 - This is great, not only a very good, strong and clear board tape but also a superb performance by everyone. There is one small caveat here, starting at Bambele and extending through 5 more songs there is the presence of tape hiss (not too bad during the songs but very noticeable when quiet) which was probably the result of the engineer using a tape brand different to whatever he used for the rest of the show which has no tape hiss at all. All Soundboard 9.2 to 9.6 - This is a great collection for the Santana enthusiast, but also for the casual fan. The sound is consistently great across all discs, with only minor tonality differences (such as a slightly brighter tone on the New Orleans portion of disc 2). There is a enough track difference to keep things from being overly repetitious.

The set features outstanding quality soundboard recordings made between 1972 and 1980. The price has risen slightly to accommodate the upgrades that have been applied to not only this but the entire line of canisters. I think you will totally be blown away when you see the difference, and the previous ones were pretty impressive so this is going to really be something special. Soundboard 9.7 - All excellent, all must haves imho. What you get sound-wise is a rich, deep tone, the Berlin tape in particular which features emphasis on the bass which is massive but detailed. The music here is more progressive than Samba, and Carlos does sometimes resort to familiar guitar runs but he also flashes a lot of other tricks and convinces the listener that he’s not a one-trick pony at all. Best I can tell here is that Devadip Ochestra is a decent attempt to take what Mahavishnu Orchestra did and accent it in different ways. Well done Carlos!

Radio Broadcast 8.8 - One thing that I really appreciate about this recording is how you can hear a real separation between bass and guitars. This is not typical of a heavy metal concert recording unless recorded and mixed for a specific purpose, such as a broadcast. So, while the sound itself might tend to be on the "brassier" side - it's not a knock...it's a way of trying to describe how there's plenty of bass but not necessarily in the form of that typical metal low end boomy sludge sound. various sources SDBRD 9.8 and audience 8.7 - The first disc contains superior, professional recordings that were sourced from a vinyl album. This stuff is ridiculously good, in every sort of way. The second disc contains an audience tape that is not bad having been refreshed with a recent re-mastering that has lifted decades of dust off it to reveal a pretty cool document.
