Audience 8.6 - Taped by the same person using the same gear so there is only minor differences between these shows which are related specifically to position, and it sounds like taper was in roughly the same general position for each show. Very consistent throughout, although just to be super detailed I have to prefer the second show which seems to be slightly closer to my ears. The quality is very clear, leans towards the upper end of the sound spectrum but not too harsh, only to the point I think you could add some bass and that would really allow these shows to satisfy. They are all very good, bass would put them into the great category. Audience 8.6 - Very low gen (no noise) recording that is leaning much more towards the bright side, perhaps even a little bit crispy but a recording like this can be tuned to your liking. What prevents a recording from having any chance at all is muddiness, and thankfully there is no muddy quality to this tape. All in all, I have to rate this as a show that one notices first the performance (from the opening notes you know it is going to be a good one), and the ears do adjust to the concert hall sound very soon, notwithstanding the EXTREMELY excited audience…like, throughout the entire show. Can’t blame ‘em I guess, but damn let the band play! Audience 8.3 - Do not let the low rating dissuade you from obtaining this show, because it is actually pretty clear and for this tour probably one of the better auds. It does lean toward low end, in a good way because it does not crowd everyone else out. Eddie is on fire and you hear him well, vocals and bass are solid (vox are a touch behind it all but still right there) so perhaps drums are the weakness but even then I can hear what he’s doing. Once your ears adjust, man this ain’t that bad. Audience 8.8 - Very clear and with enough dynamics present to really provide an authentic experience of virtually being there. These kinds of recordings, while technically not considered as excellent (unfairly) due to the measurable fidelity of the audio (in the objective sense) are actually excellent in their own right. This is a well done recording, with the sound “floating” above you and giving you a sense of time and place, of literally being there. Audience 8.6 - A clear tape, possibly a master source, that presents a very nice performance by the band with a tape that gives you a reasonable recollection of the evening. The tape leans towards a high end propensity while sacrificing any deep lows but I am 100% sure you will LOVE this one because it’s just one of those tapes that seems to get better, the ears adjust, and before you know it you are saying “damn this is pretty good”…because it actually is. As Pretty Woman ends (and there’s a moment in the song where Dave lets loose on some dingus that threw something at him) and it goes into Eddie’s solo, man, this tape TAKES OFF and becomes an easy 9.3 rating. Audience 8.5/8.7 - Both tapes are not well known, and are pre-Close To The Edge making them quite interesting to the fans of early period Yes. Both tapes sound pretty good, with the nod going to Tucson for just that little bit of clarity it has overall. There’s enough dynamics, atmosphere, and clarity to allow the listener to settle in to each show and appreciate the details (great ripping Hammond work by Wakeman throughout). Good to have these shows in the collection. Audience 8.7 - A very good tape for the time, and what a good time it is for the Stones. What I really enjoyed the most about this recording is how clear Mick Taylor is in the mix. It’s not a super bright sounding tape, and it is not muddy, it is better than average but it shines in atmosphere, performance, and vibe. The band is clearly enjoying the show as much as the audience is. A keeper! Audience 8.8 - This is a tape that does improve as it goes ultimately coming to a comfortable place, and one might say it is warm and well balanced. When I hear this I can better appreciate this period of the band, when they were experimenting with their music trying to find a place in the changing world of FM radio and top 40. Does that make it bad? I used to shake my head, but now I understand it, and I find that what they were doing was NEEDED in order to prevent ALL music from that time period sucking so much. FM Broadcast 8.9 - This recording was done from the radio broadcast even though most people think it is from the reels (it is from a reel to reel, but a recording made from the broadcast). However, once the live over the air sound mix is sorted out, it becomes pretty darn good and even if the tape has some signs of age, it’s a great document and well worth getting. Audience 9.2 - A recording that does more than merely capture a live concert on tape, it captures the dynamics and palpable vibe of the event. This is lovely stuff, with the band delivering stunning readings of majestic progressive rock numbers like Sound Chaser and Close To The Edge. To be honest, sometimes the overly jazzy keyboards of Moraz do conflict with the style and sound of the band but mostly he is able to provide the correct sounds during the key parts. Radio Broadcast & Audience 8.8/8.5 - The radio material sounds its age but is a fine document in good enough shape to give you a deeper appreciation for this hugely influential band. The audience material is from a small club, and therefore does not suffer stadium sound problems meaning you can hear everyone pretty solid especially the guitar which is great. I am happy to be able to hear these recordings knowing a little background on the band and how they forged their own path in the music industry. A bit of ancient historical importance on the 1974 show, Judas Priest opened and come on at the end to jam with Budgie making it the first recorded appearance of Judas Priest on tape!
