• Audience 8.8 One of the better sounding tapes from this period, and what’s notable about this show is the live debut of six songs from Aladdin Sane (predating the actual release of the album). About the sound – the live mix does not favor the vocals much, although audible and not murky they are not front and center – but guitar most certainly is and hurrah for that! • Studio 10 - Well, this is a rarity! Not only has this flown completely below most collectors radars, but it also qualifies as being a perfect recording…and it doesn’t necessarily begin as such (although I’d still rate it a 9.8), it becomes one. Why is that? Because it has all the elements of greatness and not just the audio quality. Eric is heard here in a more jazzy setting, with players who are well versed in music theory and are top shelf players in their own right – maybe it pushes Clapton to explore more deeply, and he does…although he still manages to make it more bluesy which to me is really cool because it gives these sessions the swing that can be sometimes absent in technical jazz. This obviously was let out on purpose, the recordings are too clean and if indeed they are rehearsals, they are very dialed in and sounding more like an album is being recorded. But if you listen super closely, there are moments where you can just hear the faintest of mic bleed through and it seems to be the kind of talk, or “shouts” that you might hear during a soundcheck or rehearsal.  This is a highly recommended listen to anyone who wants to hear Eric Clapton at his tastiest best. • Audience 9.6 - A beautiful, lush and atmospheric document. I love the stereo separation here, it’s a sound field that envelopes you in a way that makes you feel you are sitting in the first row staring up at the band.  This is a must have without question! • Soundboard 9.8 - A soundboard that captures lightning in a bottle! So it’s near perfect in balance, and nicely widen open in dynamics while at the same time leaving intact some of the open stadium atmospherics (most notable in between songs or during announcements). Either way you slice it this is a truly great recording and performance that every collector would want in the collection. • Los Angeles 1984 Soundboard 9.7 - A great one here! Crisp sounding and a beautiful mix especially how the drums sound and all the vocals even backing vocals are clearly audible. Worcester 1984 Audience 8.8 - This is not a bad tape, but it is not recorded close to the mains so it does sound somewhat distant. The music is clear and not muddy but lacks that depth your ears crave. What it does highlight is the vocals which really project, keyboards sound comparatively good too, and the recording does improve somewhat throughout the performance sounding a little fuller as it goes along. Again, not a bad one and worthy of your time but on this 2 show set (From One End To The Other) the LA show is the better by far. • Delaware 1985 Soundboard 9.3 Nice to hear this period of Trower with a good, punchy board tape that does present a minimal amount of hiss (evident between songs) but other than that not much to complain about. W. Hollywood 1990 Soundboard 9.2 Technically speaking this would rate much higher as it is what one would call a “pristine” board tape. Yes it sounds crystal clear and Robin is literally singing in your ear (a bit much perhaps), but the rating reflects what I personally consider to be a downside of board tapes…the lack of atmosphere and reliance on perfect mix. This was probably mixed for the benefit of what was coming from the stage and not for the sake of the recording being made. It’s a reference tape is what it is. Contrast this to the next show in the set and you’ll begin to understand why I always say a great audience tape beats a board tape. Karlsruhe 2009 Audience 9.5 This show gets a stellar rating because while it is not technically a superior recording (mainly due to the very slight amount of overdrive) it represents most of what I love about great audience recordings. This recording captures the lightning into a bottle so to speak. The fact that there is just a slight bit of overdriven energy (for lack of a more technical term) or lets call it “saturation” for the sake of the audiophiles out there – either way the point is that this recording will get more repeat plays than the board tapes in this set. • Audience 8.7/8.8 - A little fluctuation but not much, mainly due to at times where the recording sounds a little further away probably due to taper hiding his gear. • Audience 9.3 - This is a rock and roll show the way it used to be..and I mean WAY used to be!  So the experience is well worth checking out especially because this tape captured lightning in a bottle in a very good way.  Atmosphere combined with great sound you cannot go wrong here. • Audience 9.2 - This merits quite a bit of adoration for hardcore fans and collectors because it is a beloved show that fell through the cracks of time due to it being so incomprehensibly cut up. We don’t know why it was that way, and therefore an otherwise excellent tape was relegated to the proverbial dustbin…until today. The composite was done by an adoring fan with an ear, by taking bits here and there from other recordings only days apart from the Chicago date, was able to manage a very compelling final product. There is no excuse because you have the best P.A.’s, the best digital recorders, and great microphones. So I want something that gives me a sense of being there and this tape does that. • Audience 8.1 - Yes this is ranked pretty low on the sound quality scale, but it’s not a disaster because this is actually a full point or more better than the previous version of this legendary gig. It’s not unlistenable, and the proof is that you can hear every word Gabriel says during his stories. Extensive work in repairing and remastering this from a 1st generation tape made all the difference. • Audience 9.5 - Many of you will be surprised by my rare high rating for an audience tape…but man, I gotta tell you, this is 100% justified. Yes, it’s sonically really nice, but it delivers that magical quality that real fans know about and is kind of hard to explain the uninitiated. Let me try: you feel like you are seated there at the show, you feel the anticipation, you know what is about to happen yet can’t quite believe how actually incredible it truly is. Enough hyperbole, you get it, I love this one. But to be fair, the recording quality is more like a 9.2, still great, but it’s the atmosphere, the spaciousness, the rolling drums that seem to pan across the speakers, the great sound mix, all of it equals pure magic and a legitimate 9.5.
