Audience 8.6 - I don’t quite know what to make of this tape – it is very clear but with some kind of slight crispness in the middle to high band that suggests the microphone being used was not up to the task. That being said, it’s still a pretty good recording, and with a class mic it would have been a 9.0 or better. Well worth getting, that is my final assessment. Audience 7.8 - Recorded on what sounds like a realistic cassette deck, it’s limited in dynamic range and clarity. It is not, however, a pile of muck and murk, you can hear pretty much every instrument, and guitar cuts through during solos but rhythm-wise it’s behind the sound a bit. Vocals are clear, I get drums pretty well, so it’s not a waste of time and it’s a great tour with 25 or 6 to 4 being their latest blockbuster smash hit. I would get this if you appreciated the band during their initial rise to stardom, as the joy in their playing does come through on this tape. This tape has been given a little facelift to reveal better dynamics, less hiss, and more depth in the bottom end, and high mids attenuated to make for a smooth, comfortable listening experience. Audience 8.6 - This is an untouched, raw transfer straight from the reels, and as such it will sound like it could be MUCH better sonically with some professional sound re-mastering. Many people will no doubt want to hear it as it was recorded, and it is good, it’s really pretty good, but what I would prefer is a sonic facelift because I think this one really deserves it. It’s still a great show. Hard to hear any detail in the guitars, it’s on the bassy side, so it’s bass and Jagger, and some locomotive sound which could be Keith and Ronnie. I mean, it is clear enough, it’s not a “bad” tape at all – in fact listening closely I am tempted to say this was pulled from a video source. Audience 8.6 This is a pretty common Who boot, and, well, it’s fine but to me I thought guitar was too low in the mix. It’s a rollicking good show, bass, vocals sound strong followed by Moon, and to be fair, during quieter parts Townshend’s guitar is clearer. It’s during the heavy parts where guitar loses force (it’s there, it’s not completely gone!) and probably it saves the tape deck from overloading so I’d rather it a little behind in the mix than completely distorting the tape. (Can't Seem To) Get A Line On You [4:24] The Sotheby’s Reel are Glyn John’s working tapes when he was the Stones' studio producer during Let it Bleed through the Sticky Fingers sessions, the Stones classic rock period. The tape reel was auctioned some years ago at the famous Sotheby's London auction house and featured some different versions of great songs. Something to point out; "Gimme Shelter" recorded here on 15th March 1969 and featuring Nicky Hopkins on piano, a version of "You Got The Silver" sung by Jagger from 16th February and an early take of “Sister Morphine” almost without piano. But remarkable is also "Loving Cup" that starts with a striking different piano intro and lasts more than 6:30 minutes. Minimal are the differences in the mix for songs like "You Gotta Move", "Dead Flowers" and "Sister Morphine" second version that all resemble the finished "Sticky Fingers" release. On the other side of the coin we have to put the many opening riffs of both "Brown Sugar" and "Bitch" that are tirelessly repeated by an engineer that rolls back and forth the tape looking for a better echo effect, it seems. When the Stones recorded "Brown Sugar" in Muscle Shoals Studios it is said that they tried the song the whole night to get it right, we can feel how they felt while listening to all these false starts. Anyway when the tracks are completed like version number 11 of "Brown Sugar", here comes an early take with Stu on piano and no sax or takes 19 and 20 of "Bitch" where you can hear Jagger ad-libbing over Keith Richards' guitar solo. Last track offered is a primitive version of "Shine A Light" called "(Can’t Seem To) Get A Line On You" that stems from Leon Russell’s session at Olympic Studios in early October 1969 with Jagger on vocals (different words) but this take was officially released in January 1994 on a Leon Russell CD. -

I hear a little bit of distortion in a very specific place in the middle band, not anything to ruin the experience but it is present and sounds like someone made an effort to clean it up in remastering. But, you know, I listen to these and I still enjoy them a lot. It’s the event that I hear, I really don’t care if I don’t get every detailed note I mean it’s the sloppy Stones isn’t it? Audience 8.8 - What this tape shows is that Vanilla Fudge were loud as hell on stage. That Hammond organ, it filled every square molecule of space with massive sound. No other bands at the time were using an organ quite like this! But, it’s fun to hear, if a little dated perhaps. It’s got good presence and clarity, with an ample amount of kick where it needs it. Audience 8.7 - Here is a good argument for why we should be open minded towards audience tapes. You NEED some atmosphere! I want to re-experience the show, that means I want to hear it as it happened, not sterilized and filtered. I like board tapes too, but we need a balance. This recording allows me to participate with the audience and be there with them in the moment, and hear the band from out front of the stage. It’s clean, and I hear all the instruments well placed, and reasonably dynamic with just the right amount of headroom so we don’t go pegging the meters. I really like this tape, you will too. Audience 8.8 - Some people list this as a soundboard, and if you heard the music right off you might think that too, but the audience applause gives it away as an audience tape, albeit a damn fine one. Plenty of atmosphere, and pretty solid dynamics (lush and deep bass, clear guitar, present vocals). Great version of Astronomy Domine (still performed live during the early part of 1970). Audience 8.7 - This recording has an overall decent quality to it but somewhere in the mid frequency band there is a small amount of clutter that seems to be more noticeable when heavy bass is played. Otherwise the audio can be remarkably clear, but I don’t think this slight flaw (probably in the mic that was used) ruins the recording; it’s not “glaring”, just there. Re-mastering the audio helped to notch out the offending frequency making it a lot better, so go for it, it’s pretty good. Audience 8.3 - This recording is balancing very finely on the borderline but thankfully falls onto the “acceptable” side. I would call it slightly above average maybe, as the tape shows some typical age limitations, but still manages to present the evening in a listenable quality. Audience 8.0 - In this particular case, the rating doesn’t say anything about how amazing this tape is. Sure, it’s not glorious hi-fi with ultra-wide dynamic range, but it is actually much more than that. It’s just, pure magic. Short, yes, it’s not complete by a long shot and I am a little sad we don’t have the rest, but what we do have is proof of why Zeppelin took off after touring the States in ’69. I can’t imagine what people were thinking at this show. They could not have ever gotten anything as monumental as this from any local artist or 2nd tier touring act. This is indescribable; I can’t even find the right words. Page and Plant are killing it, in perfect unison, playing the best live versions of these tunes I think I have ever heard, approaching the majesty of the Fillmore West 4-27-69 but not as clear (obviously). The guitar tone is similar, with that funky echoplex delay sound especially on You Shook Me which launches into another dimension. The sound, at first, you might be dismayed, but stick with it. By the time you get a couple minutes in, you will be mesmerized. It’s an 8.0 that you’ll listen to a few more times for the lesson Page and Plant give in how to hypnotize an audience. Audience 8.7 - You are a little deeper in the audience for this show, but it’s a fun ride because the audience at this show is so into it, they know what they are seeing and hearing and the band responds to it by giving one hell of a performance. A touch thin in the bandwidth but it is clearly captured enough to where you will get drawn into it completely. Guitar sounds cool, the atmosphere lends itself well to Frank’s sound here. CD1 FM Broadcast 8.8 A little hiss present, and a little “compression” but a good tight sound nonetheless. The Miami 78 is Audience 8.3 With some big hall boom in the kick drum. CD 2 Audience 8.5 Thin in some places, but opens wider as it goes along. Taper possibly moves closer, and sound improves. CD 3 Audience 8.6 A loud, boisterous, beer soaked rock and roll affair with sound quality that I would describe as clear but missing some mid-band punch. It’s nice to have a chronological history sometimes, you get to hear a band just gain more and more confidence (not as if this band ever lacked any). This band’s sound and style really was custom made for these years but after that it dropped off the map. Too bad really, it’s a good time rock and roll music and transcends time. Audience 8.8 - Back in the cassette tape trading days, many tapes would be passed around containing the Mick Taylor period and those were the ones I most gravitated towards. A lot of those shows I have never listened to again since the cassette days for fear they would still sound so weak…but this one has blown me away, literally. It is not the old multi-gen, hissy and muddy clusterphuck like so many of those audience recordings were, this one is really pretty friggin’ good. Not perfect, but VERY damn good. Audience 8.7 - Every audience tape has a certain unique “timbre” to it, a quality hard to define – it encompasses distance from source, surrounding ambience, equalization, harmonics, and more. So, this recording is what I would call “very good” but different than other 88 Euro Zappa tapes in timbre. I find this one leaning too far in upper mid band and treble, not irritatingly, but wanted more bottom end. My ears were telling me that is what it wanted…yours may not it is all very subjective.
