Audience 8.4 - A middle of the road stadium recording that is quite clear but not very close. That being said, I found much to appreciate from this one – namely the curious line-up at this time. Tony Martin singing, ok, he is decent enough and certainly professional caliber but to me, this just is not Black Sabbath. It’s a really badass metal band with Tony Iommi on guitar. This recording does allow you to really hear both Tony’s pretty loud and clear. Audience 8.8 - This is a tape that does improve as it goes ultimately coming to a comfortable place, and one might say it is warm and well balanced. When I hear this I can better appreciate this period of the band, when they were experimenting with their music trying to find a place in the changing world of FM radio and top 40. Does that make it bad? I used to shake my head, but now I understand it, and I find that what they were doing was NEEDED in order to prevent ALL music from that time period sucking so much. Audience - 9.5, 8.5, 8.8 We start with a real cracker of a tape, recorded close up with excellent gear…hard to put this down it is extremely captivating. Then we have a first – the first gig in Europe by the band, and it is a very good tape but we are going to feel the difference between this and the first disc. It’s not got the dynamics of the ’77, but it is considered a very good tape nonetheless. The final disc contains a very good recording with plenty of atmosphere and some dynamics, maybe a touch of clutter in a very specific mid band frequency but it is minor to my ears. It’s a real enjoyable tape! Audience 9.0 - Before I first heard this I assumed it would be a tough listen based on other recordings from this venue. Well, I am very happy to report that my assumption was dead wrong! This is just a great, great recording for the time period. It does seem to be about midway back but this is not a liability in this situation because it seems to give an aura, a sense of time and place, with the ambience and natural echo (just a touch). Soundboard 8.8 - Not too bad for a 48 year old tape. Does have some lack of clarity (minor) being old analog but for the most part I say dive right in because with this band…well the water is rather deep, and colorful. Audience 8.6 - A little age shows in this tape, but it’s nicely mid-rangey and kind of phat too, meaning it’s got some balls to it even though it may be a little compressed and aged. I would recommend this one though, because one key quality of this tape is that the two guitars are really nicely separated, almost a wide pan effect if you can believe it. Sounds pretty cool. Soundboard 9.1 - This mix favors Mick Jagger, but I like the very lifelike feel of it overall. It’s not super well separated but everything can be heard well enough and that includes the piano (although horns are pushed back), and Mick Taylor is especially present when he solos (an added bonus!). There is no doubt that this recording must be present in every Rolling Stones fan’s collection. Audience 8.6 - A recording that is very clear but dangerously close to being too crisp on the highs…but thankfully it doesn’t sizzle and ruin anything. It’s still very good – might could use more thickness, but you will probably be able to enjoy this show and certainly are welcome to boost the low end which will help. Audience 8.3 - Not recorded from the best vantage point on the best gear, but taper made the best of it, and it gets incrementally better from the time where he moves to a better spot (closer). Tape has all the hallmarks of a large stadium, loud rock concert, the regular deal…not going to blow anyone away. Now that I’ve said that, there’s some good news! Yup – Pete is playing great and he is the clearest sounding, followed by Roger, and the bass has a good, deep, rumbling growl that comes through (NOT boomy!). If this tape had been boomy, I would have rated it in the upper 7’s. First song, first row behind the stage looking at Keiths Moon’s back. Track two starts and I’m looking for a better recording position. The stage has typical left and right arrays but there was also an extra array on the right side facing the stage. Strangely not one to the left side. I parked myself in front of it which was basically just above me. On minor movement towards the center of the arena on the right side to avoid two chicks with whistles and the remaining show was recorded in that position. -
Audience 8.8 - I can’t fault this too much even though it is not a tape without a certain sonic limitation – but it’s not enough of a fault to be critical of what is a fantastic performance paired with a warm, energy filled tape. It’s a great capture that barely holds the intensity before it begins to break-up, albeit only slightly, as the volume overwhelms the microphone. Is that bad? Normally it spells disaster if the recording equipment is, say, a realistic or some no-name generic piece of crap but this taper is obviously using high end stuff. The point at which volume and intensity causes normal gear to fail only slightly bother this set-up. So, I recommend it as one of the better 1976 tapes out there. It’s simply great and you’ll love it. Audience 8.7 - This show features the return to the Spectrum, a venue they had recently played and for some reason decided that they needed to schedule another show there (perhaps they felt the last show there was below par?). Anyway, by all accounts it’s a better gig, and the audio quality is also better with clearer sound and better separation of instruments. The recording levels are a touch low, so you will have to turn up the volume (trust me it won’t distort or break up, it will get even better). A weird start to a show! The band cranks through its classics at this point, an entertaining show to these ears. Good quality for a 1977 gig, straight from the taper. Enjoy! -
Audience 8.6 - This recording does not possess great dynamic range, but it is nice and clear and features some biting guitar and thankfully present vocals. It’s a good ’76 tape and worthy of the collection for sure. Audience 8.5 - Interesting tape, it’s very clear concerning Mr. Jagger! I kind of like this kind of tape, because it’s a realistic sound, like probably what your own ears would have picked up had you been there. I really get a sense of the venue, and the mood of the day. The band sound really hyped, it feels they are playing with a sense of urgency and anger. The sound does sometimes slightly fade out but it comes right back and it is not very frequent. Overall it’s a really fun show to hear! Audience 8.7 - A very well recorded show by all accounts. The sound is round, and has nice timbre. I hear everything clearly, bass sounds warm, guitars are raw and jangly…basically this sounds like the Stones in a club and it’s anything but a club! Audience 8.4 - A fine document albeit not without limitations. Sound is generally clear, the mix is heavily in favor of Keith’s rhythm guitar, although Mick Taylor is not absent. Mick Jagger is audible, not clearly, but he is audible. Bass sounds pretty good, Charlie is there too but not distinctly. It’s not muddy, really, it’s not close, it’s not far – this is a very good “average” tape if that makes any sense. The Seattle portion (included in this set) is maybe in the 8.7 range, this source being a bit better than the other version we offer here. BTW I think the Midnight Rambler version here is one of the best of the tour. Audience 8.2 - A scrappy document, immersed in the audience, band playing a large hall…but thankfully I can hear everything. Not much clarity when they are at full swing but I would say this tape still has its charms and collectors, if they don’t have it, may want to add it to the collection. Incidentally the band returned again to play Philly later the same year, and that show exists and is pretty decent sounding. People slag on it, but that "first side" is pure rock and roll genius, just has a flow and the rest is good too. If that LP came out today, people would shit their pants in joy. But I digress...this show is from the taper and solid quality. This is the show where Tyler and Perry got hit with an M-80 as they returned for the encore, so alas, there is no encore. But we also do not hear any fireworks blast as the tape simply shuts off after the Train Kept A Rollin'/Get The Lead Out jam. The band would return to the same venue just weeks later. -
Audience 8.5 - A really fine document of a superb time for the band…young, hungry, full of spit and vinegar and quite frankly at the top of their game. The playing is transcendental, a band completely in sync with each other. The tape is noise free, and while most of the time it sounds a touch on the dull side, it does brighten up and you know it’s probably because the taper got bold and moved closer to the stage. Audience 8.4 - A lo-fi but pretty decent and clear recording. I would not expect there to be many high-end live tapes floating around due to the fact that most people probably did not know who this guy was. Collectors will appreciate having this, a very uncommon thing and worthy of investigation. Audience 8.6 - I don’t quite know what to make of this tape – it is very clear but with some kind of slight crispness in the middle to high band that suggests the microphone being used was not up to the task. That being said, it’s still a pretty good recording, and with a class mic it would have been a 9.0 or better. Well worth getting, that is my final assessment. Audience 7.8 - Recorded on what sounds like a realistic cassette deck, it’s limited in dynamic range and clarity. It is not, however, a pile of muck and murk, you can hear pretty much every instrument, and guitar cuts through during solos but rhythm-wise it’s behind the sound a bit. Vocals are clear, I get drums pretty well, so it’s not a waste of time and it’s a great tour with 25 or 6 to 4 being their latest blockbuster smash hit. I would get this if you appreciated the band during their initial rise to stardom, as the joy in their playing does come through on this tape. Audience 8.6 - This is an untouched, raw transfer straight from the reels, and as such it will sound like it could be MUCH better sonically with some professional sound re-mastering. Many people will no doubt want to hear it as it was recorded, and it is good, it’s really pretty good, but what I would prefer is a sonic facelift because I think this one really deserves it. It’s still a great show. Hard to hear any detail in the guitars, it’s on the bassy side, so it’s bass and Jagger, and some locomotive sound which could be Keith and Ronnie. I mean, it is clear enough, it’s not a “bad” tape at all – in fact listening closely I am tempted to say this was pulled from a video source. Audience 8.6 This is a pretty common Who boot, and, well, it’s fine but to me I thought guitar was too low in the mix. It’s a rollicking good show, bass, vocals sound strong followed by Moon, and to be fair, during quieter parts Townshend’s guitar is clearer. It’s during the heavy parts where guitar loses force (it’s there, it’s not completely gone!) and probably it saves the tape deck from overloading so I’d rather it a little behind in the mix than completely distorting the tape. (Can't Seem To) Get A Line On You [4:24] The Sotheby’s Reel are Glyn John’s working tapes when he was the Stones' studio producer during Let it Bleed through the Sticky Fingers sessions, the Stones classic rock period. The tape reel was auctioned some years ago at the famous Sotheby's London auction house and featured some different versions of great songs. Something to point out; "Gimme Shelter" recorded here on 15th March 1969 and featuring Nicky Hopkins on piano, a version of "You Got The Silver" sung by Jagger from 16th February and an early take of “Sister Morphine” almost without piano. But remarkable is also "Loving Cup" that starts with a striking different piano intro and lasts more than 6:30 minutes. Minimal are the differences in the mix for songs like "You Gotta Move", "Dead Flowers" and "Sister Morphine" second version that all resemble the finished "Sticky Fingers" release. On the other side of the coin we have to put the many opening riffs of both "Brown Sugar" and "Bitch" that are tirelessly repeated by an engineer that rolls back and forth the tape looking for a better echo effect, it seems. When the Stones recorded "Brown Sugar" in Muscle Shoals Studios it is said that they tried the song the whole night to get it right, we can feel how they felt while listening to all these false starts. Anyway when the tracks are completed like version number 11 of "Brown Sugar", here comes an early take with Stu on piano and no sax or takes 19 and 20 of "Bitch" where you can hear Jagger ad-libbing over Keith Richards' guitar solo. Last track offered is a primitive version of "Shine A Light" called "(Can’t Seem To) Get A Line On You" that stems from Leon Russell’s session at Olympic Studios in early October 1969 with Jagger on vocals (different words) but this take was officially released in January 1994 on a Leon Russell CD. -

I hear a little bit of distortion in a very specific place in the middle band, not anything to ruin the experience but it is present and sounds like someone made an effort to clean it up in remastering. Audience 8.8 - What this tape shows is that Vanilla Fudge were loud as hell on stage. That Hammond organ, it filled every square molecule of space with massive sound. No other bands at the time were using an organ quite like this! But, it’s fun to hear, if a little dated perhaps. A loud tape that barely stays together at full volume but miraculously manages to capture the event in good form. Vanilla Fudge .... Studio quality 8.8 - A somewhat dated sound here, but clear and clean and straightforward. CCR were very song based as a band but man, they can also free-form jam with the best of them. Audience 8.8 - Aside from a rough beginning, this tape comes pretty darn close to the excellence of the Toronto ’75 show. It’s got good presence and clarity, with an ample amount of kick where it needs it. I also find the performance very strong, Keith is firing on all eight and the band is really in sync with each other. A keeper! Audience 8.7 - Here is a good argument for why we should be open minded towards audience tapes. You NEED some atmosphere! I want to re-experience the show, that means I want to hear it as it happened, not sterilized and filtered. I like board tapes too, but we need a balance. This recording allows me to participate with the audience and be there with them in the moment, and hear the band from out front of the stage. It’s clean, and I hear all the instruments well placed, and reasonably dynamic with just the right amount of headroom so we don’t go pegging the meters. I really like this tape, you will too. Audience 8.8 - Some people list this as a soundboard, and if you heard the music right off you might think that too, but the audience applause gives it away as an audience tape, albeit a damn fine one. Plenty of atmosphere, and pretty solid dynamics (lush and deep bass, clear guitar, present vocals). Great version of Astronomy Domine (still performed live during the early part of 1970).
