Audience 8.7 - The tape is new to circulation and it’s a good one. The rating reflects only that there is a lack of dynamics in the bandwidth of the tape but the clarity is decent and it is a comfortable listen – not harsh, not muddy, not brittle…it’s a good tape and I am glad it was discovered. Audience 8.8 - A very good effort by taper to manage not only a good sounding capture but largely complete from start to finish with only occasional crowd interference (and usually limited to between songs). Audience 8.4 - A tape that I am sure has slipped through the cracks and has been forgotten by collectors when I don’t think it ought to be. It’s surely not the greatest recording, and it’s also not nearly the worst – but it’s from a really great period and tour, some of the best moments for Rush seemed to occur on the European leg of the 1979 tour. You can listen to the infamous Offenbach or Pink Pop tapes as proof, but this forgotten old tape, having been dusted off and given a fresh re-mastering, is ready to be added to your collection. Audience 8.4-8.6 - This gets a double rating because I found that it seemed to become better as it went, and really had its best moments during songs or parts that were not full on max volume. Now that being said, the mic that taper used (probably a condenser mic built into his deck) could not accurately reproduce the sound it was picking up in the hall to the tape itself – but because there was level adjust (I am guessing auto level), it never distorted. So what you get is a crowded sounding tape during most of the performance when the music is at full tilt (it’s Black Sabbath so yeah, it’s mostly full tilt), but during parts where the music is more sparse (like during Black Sabbath, or the solos, especially the drum solo) you can hear what the recorder was capable of because it is way much better. In fact I praise the drum sounds, super massive and that’s why I loved Black Sabbath on this tape in particular because it’s frighteningly dense and scary sounding here. This show can be appreciated for the inclusion of songs like Gypsy, All Moving Parts, and Rock and Roll Doctor which are audible enough that you can thank this taper. I’d not heard of this tape before so I assume it’s new to circulation, and personally speaking I am glad it exists and I feel it offers something worthwhile. Soundboard 9.8 -I really cannot recommend this strongly enough. It’s a monster recording in every aspect – especially how direct and clear Jeff comes through. Just place your face directly in front of his amp and there you have it. Audience 9.0 - This is a very good recording that delivers most of what you need, but for someone who perhaps understands the nuances of sound they may have wished for hearing this from a little bit closer with more clarity. That is nitpicking though – I think this sounds very very decent. The main attraction is Jeff Beck’s guitar playing and Johnny Depp’s accompaniment and you get that all very nicely. Audience 8.8 - This show, while not the soundboard you expect since there’s so many from this tour, is a real charmer regardless. I am not trying to sell you on this, this just captivated me and by the end of the show I felt like I somehow knew Eric personally a little tiny bit. Soundboard 9.8 - This is a close to perfect KBFH broadcast and I say that because I love the sound mix here. For me, it was important to hear the bass so nice, round, present, defined, and pumping! Of course that is not to denigrate anything else but for me I just loved the way that shone through. The band is really at the highest of heights for a band, I remember growing up in the mid 70’s and this music permeated everything. The Doobie Brothers were the house band for the United States in 1976. Audience 8.9 - This recording is super duper realistic, meaning it’s probably exactly as your ears would have heard had you been in tapers seats…a but far back but because taper used exceptional quality gear you get a crystal clear sound. It’s the main PA mix that you hear which is not an ideal mix to be honest. Guitar and vocals are not pronounced but horns are prominent which kind of gives a unique way to hear the band. Is that bad? Well, I am not saying instruments are buried, I am saying the mix does not favor them and overall this is a unique recording that provides realism of atmosphere and amazingly clear and clean sound. Worth exploring for sure. This version of the Chick Corea 1978 tour does not feature a full band ensemble but rather a more natural, non electrified direction which allows the players to really showcase their talents without much competition for the sound space. Audience 8.8 - This tape is fascinating! Really gives the listener exactly what they might have experienced attending this concert, a sort of audio time capsule in very good quality but more than that it is LOADED with electric atmosphere. You get a very good sense of time and space. Fantastic! There is one caveat…a microphone drop out does occur towards the end of the show that kind of spoils the flow but it was not something that seemed like taper error so all is forgiven. Audience 8.8 - Excellent recording for the time period when it seemed most audience tapes sounded very flat and tinny. This one is pretty dynamic but for one fault (not tapers fault). The PA system, while good, did not give vocals enough clarity. During quieter passages, yes, but in louder parts (most of the gig) it’s sort of indistinct, but audible and not buried (just not real distinct). I mean, he’s totally audible is what I am getting at, but for some reason I can’t make out anything he’s singing about (is this par for the course with Marillion?). BTW the Genesis comparisons are accurate!
