This collection has been remastered and despite that, there are still one or two tracks that show the ravages of time. One can only assume some of it was not saved, as was the BBC’s policy of not giving a shit, therefore it was up to fans to record from a radio broadcast themselves. The next afternoon they performed: 'Leaving Here', 'Please Please Please' and 'Just You and Me, Darling'. The sessions tapes were wiped and the selections here are all that has survived on copies of "Top of the Tops" transcription discs #31 & #34. The song selection here is dominated by soul covers picked by Roger, who was still the undisputed leader of the group. The balance engineer on the session did not bother correcting this and as a result the sound turns into a muddy mess from that point on (with the mixdown compressor working on overload). Recorded on this day were five jingles, 'My Way' (not broadcast) and alternate versions of 'Pictures Of Lily' & 'A Quick One While He's Away'. Also readied for the broadcast were early mixes of 'I Can See For Miles'*, 'Relax', 'Our Love Was', 'I Can't Reach You', 'Summertime Blues' & 'Someone's Coming'. These songs were already recorded on an earlier date and would eventually appear on official Who product with a slightly different mix (although it took more than 30 years for 'Summertime Blues'). This is the first Who BBC session that has at least partially survived on tape on the BBC archives, as the jingles and 'A Quick One' do not appear on copies of "Top of the Tops" transcription disc #157 & #160, yet appear in crystal clear quality on the official release. Strangely enough, the two TOTP discs seem to have been the source for the other tracks on the official CD, all of which are marred by a voiceover. The versions here are uninterrupted from start to finish (with the exception of the ending of 'Our Love Was'), for the first time ever. As a bonus, I have added a clean mono mix of 'Lily' with better fidelity than the BBC source which has not circulated before. * The 45RPM & BBC versions both contain a heavy bass dub that was imposed on the mono album master. Audience 8.8 - A very decent recording for the vintage. Small club atmosphere permeates which gives this recording the legendary status it deserves. Audience 9.3 - It never ceases to amaze me that after all these years tapes like this still keep surfacing. This is really clear and bright, I am having a tough time finding things to complain about here. There’s plenty of headroom to flavor the sound to your liking, if you want to add more bass, yeah, this is just a perfect palate to do so. Anything you do will only make it even better because the core audio is uniquely suited for attenuating without negative consequence. Audience 9.4 - Before you write off the late 80’s Eric Clapton, you REALLY need to look deeper for a minute. This performance, and this recording, clearly demonstrates the reason why one should examine the totality of an artist’s career, particularly if said artist was as prolific and talented as Mr. Clapton. The edgy, electrified sound of Clapton’s Cream days is gone and that is ok so long as you still get the TALENT, and many of Clapton’s performances (at least on tape) sometimes lacked the elements that you would have hoped for, despite his undeniable songwriting prowess…it was the PLAYING of the guitar, and the sound of said guitar, that we craved. Here, along with his pal Mark Knopfler, all of that is delivered and the audio quality does the whole thing justice because it is excellent. I think playing with Mark elevated Eric’s game. Hearing them do “Money For Nothing” together was cool, and Mark decided to sing in his own “bluesy” way in deference to Eric. Sweet! Eric Clapton feat. Studio Quality 9.5 - I am thankful for this because it has further taught me to appreciate and respect Clapton’s musicality, and his desire to remain true to himself first and foremost. If you listen to this music without preconditions you realize it’s pretty good and if the man’s name was not Eric Clapton, you’d be thinking this guy should be much bigger. Audience 9.2 - Amazing atmosphere that the band completely catches and performs up to. The crowd is very responsive but does not intrude on the recording – even during clap-alongs which I normally hate but here is actually enhances the song! Fantastic all the way around, and there’s plenty of headroom left in the recording so if you increase frequency (if you have an EQ) or volume you won’t destroy the integrity of the sound. Audience 8.4 - Not a high fidelity recording, sounding almost like an AM radio broadcast, but it gets a good sound review because it’s got clear guitar and bass (some tape hiss) and vocals are very clear. When a new tape pops up from such an early vintage you always immediately suspect it will be muddy crap so it’s a pleasant surprise to hear that it is decent. I like this show too, it’s a regular tour stop but the band is out to prove a point – and that point is that Led Zeppelin is not the only great English heavy rock band touring the States. Audience 9.3 - A brilliant, dynamic, and exciting recording that anyone could enjoy. I mean, this sounds like it could be officially released…not 100% perfect but I would not be as thrilled about it if it was perfect. Audience 8.5 - While some may say this recording is not technically that great, I beg to differ. Now, it is not super clear, but it is not muddy…it is not distant, it is not super dynamic but it still has guts and balls. I actually REALLY grooved to this, and the band is ferocious sounding. Hearing the fresh faced Vinnie Appice on drums for the first time with Sabbath and he’s really driving the beat, a different style to Bill Ward. This one is a must have for anyone that calls themselves a Sabbath fan. It’s THAT important. Soundboard 8.8 - A less than perfect board tape as far as the overall timbre, and the mix itself. I found this tape to resemble maybe a really good AM broadcast, but perhaps that is too harsh! Audience 8.6-8.8 - A tape that begins inauspiciously as a pretty good but distant tape. Slowly, it begins to blossom into something much more intriguing. Taper smuggled very good equipment into the venue, that much is obvious, and he worked at getting into a better position during the show until what you end up with is a very tasty audience recording. Audience 9.2 - What immediately strikes you about this recording is that Rick Wright’s synth sounds and effects are NOT window dressing! In fact, they are almost overwhelmingly loud at times during the concert. Now, what I like most about old recordings is when they reveal something to me I never knew – in this case I did not know or appreciate how much Rick’s work, however consequential during the song, was not mixed out or down by any stretch but you might think that judging on the myriad hundreds of tapes that exist that do not give you a true appreciation of the volume. This tape is insistent, relentless, and thankfully clear and dynamic. The middle and upper midrange is sometimes almost too much but never does it distort. Minden 1973 Audience 8.8 - One of the earliest concert recordings ever sourced! It sounds very good, decent equipment used, and maybe placed a little back in the club but otherwise it’s a lot better than it has a right to be. The band certainly evolved quite a bit from these early club days, but the character of the band never did. Fascinating document! Minden 1974 Audience 9.4 - What a difference a year makes, as the band return to the same club a year later and wreck the place! Audience 8.9 - By ’73 audiences had realized King Crimson was not a typical “rock” band and this recording captures the experience of a group of people seeing and hearing something entirely unlike your basic rock concert. The taper was well positioned and used very good gear, and this source sounds very much like either 1st gen or master it is quiet (although just the faintest bit of tape noise) and has captured the ambience and mood of the gig which is nice. Audience 8.8 - This recording is nice and clear, and on the “bright” side of the audio spectrum which is actually very good for those who wish to season the sound with EQ. You can add some low end here and it would make a world of difference because the sound is already good, so anything that can help it is only going to make it even better rather than overdone. Sometimes loud rock concerts in large venues have a low end rumble that makes adding anything to it a risky proposition – this one screams “please add some low end to me”! Soundboard 8.8 - The audio is excellent soundboard but the mix leaves out most bottom end, although the bassist is there I can hear him sometimes! Is the recording trebly and thin? Nope. It’s a good recording, with everything you really came to hear which is guitar…and of that there is plenty. Ducking, diving, turning around on a dime, vibrating, electric and fun. Audience 8.7 - A surprisingly decent tape surfaces from Italy where Genesis found initial acceptance in the early part of their career. Sound is clear for the most part, and the timbre is pleasing to the ear…if I can knock it I would say maybe it is a bit compressed in the middle, so no crispness in the highs nor definition in the low end but it’s not the kind of compression that you get from, say, a video tape. It’s quite good like I said so feel secure if you get it knowing it will be worthwhile. Audience 8.5 - At first it’s a little over-driven and very harsh but it all smoothes out and becomes an astonishing document…still rather crude but powerful and all instruments are heard. I was transfixed by this, by the band’s tightness and such excellent guitar! Wow, to have been there… Disc two is a very rare document of the John Kay Band opening for Steppenwolf in 1972 and is also very good…and very Steppenwolfy as you could imagine.
