  • Lakeland 1980 Soundboard 9.3 - So it’s the early 1980’s and I have to be honest but I would not have given Prince a chance. But, listening to these recordings today I hear real drums, crunchy guitars with an almost psychedelic tone, and confident rhythm section all belting out some decent funk and pop (although I don’t quite hear the precedent to superstardom).   • Audience 8.4 - The quality of the audio is very good, being taped on what sounds like something better than a realistic recorder, but it is somewhat distant from the stage, and consequently a lack of sharpness. So, sound is good on your ears, but maybe sounds like what you would have heard if you were sitting in the upper deck at the Garden.   • Audience 8.4 - So, first the good news. This recording is much better than the Dublin ’83 show. Why is that significant?  Because there are precious few live recordings of any kind of quality highlighting this short lived period with Gillan. I don’t know about you, but I think this material and the sound of the band during this time period is just awesome. I really would have loved more of this…but alas it was not meant to be. The downside is that the recording is mainly from Geezer’s side of the stage, so you are going to get an earful of Geezer, and that is not a deal breaker but what sucks is that Tony sounds weak in comparison. Another upside?  You can hear Ian Gillan over the wall of sound, and therein lies the main reason why this tape deserves a listen. Will it get repeated plays?  Probably not…but I was happy to be able to get another chance to hear Ian Gillan live with Black Sabbath and I am better for it.   • Soundboard 9.3 - OK, let me explain why the high rating here. Technically speaking, the actual audio quality is more like 8.8 to be honest…but this tape is so MUCH more than that and deserves a super high rating because of it. Let me explain: First of all, the audio is good enough to get excellent separation of instruments, that allows you to hear the detail of the guitar and drums, with a driving keyboard and clear vocals…and that is important because a certain new vocalist is hoping to impress in front of a London audience – and he does, they ALL do in a major way especially Blackmore. See, Richie is one of those guitarists that really goes for it, and sometimes it works and sometimes he is probably not inspired as much so it falls a little flat…not here! He’s simply brilliant and when I hear him like this I remember to include him on my all time greatest guitarists list ha ha!  This rating is for the spectacular event this gig is, and how happy we should be to hear it clearly.   • Central Park 1971 Audience 8.6 - The limitations of this tape are mainly the over-riding level of tape his present, although it’s been re-mastered to the degree that much was removed without sacrificing highs. The actual recording is not bad, and even with some hiss, the tape does not sound like it is multiple gens down. Highs are good, lows are present, mix is not terrible (guitars are somewhat low, but this is a live mix situation and not the taping). Copenhagen 1972 Audience 8.8 - A very clear tape with an emphasis on high end crispness (not brittle or irritating, just very clear in the high end), mix favors vocals, drums, then keys and guitars in the same range.   • Audience 9.5 - Astounding! This, this is beyond devastating. Personally, I have to put this right up there with hearing Museo Rosenbach for the first time. How do I arrive at this?  Because, in 2021 you sort of don’t expect this old 70’s era Italian prog band to move the needle other than just reliving past glories. Oh how wrong that is…for starters, their SOUND is massive, powerful, dynamic, energetic, and TIGHT. Their material is amazing, complex, unpredictable, moving, and absolutely just devastating. I challenge anyone to find a modern band that can pull something like this off with such panache. Heavy is more than just distortion folks…it’s a lot of stuff and these guys just know what heaviness is from decades of experience.   • Audience 8.8 - It’s hard to express exactly what makes a particular recording or gig special, mainly because it is all very subjective. But, I have been collecting music since 1982, so I feel I have earned some credibility ha ha! So let me tell you why this one is special. Placed right in front of the main P.A. speakers, this sound is brutal. Sure, the first 45 seconds are a mess, but it gets better, and man, is this a rocking good time!  The sound is ferocious, threatening at any moment to destroy the tape completely, but it doesn’t. It’s hot, it’s loud, but it’s also very real, as if happening at the very moment you are hearing it. The Who in 1970, in Detroit (Rock City!), playing Tommy (and other great tracks) in front of an appreciative audience (without incident!).  Everyone sounds great here, and you have a front row seat. The song selection here is dominated by soul covers picked by Roger, who was still the undisputed leader of the group. Recorded on this day were five jingles, 'My Way' (not broadcast) and alternate versions of 'Pictures Of Lily' & 'A Quick One While He's Away'. Also readied for the broadcast were early mixes of 'I Can See For Miles'*, 'Relax', 'Our Love Was', 'I Can't Reach You', 'Summertime Blues' & 'Someone's Coming'. These songs were already recorded on an earlier date and would eventually appear on official Who product with a slightly different mix (although it took more than 30 years for 'Summertime Blues'). This is the first Who BBC session that has at least partially survived on tape on the BBC archives, as the jingles and 'A Quick One' do not appear on copies of "Top of the Tops" transcription disc #157 & #160, yet appear in crystal clear quality on the official release. Strangely enough, the two TOTP discs seem to have been the source for the other tracks on the official CD, all of which are marred by a voiceover. The versions here are uninterrupted from start to finish (with the exception of the ending of 'Our Love Was'), for the first time ever. As a bonus, I have added a clean mono mix of 'Lily' with better fidelity than the BBC source which has not circulated before. * The 45RPM & BBC versions both contain a heavy bass dub that was imposed on the mono album master.   • Audience 9.3 - It never ceases to amaze me that after all these years tapes like this still keep surfacing. This is really clear and bright, I am having a tough time finding things to complain about here. There’s plenty of headroom to flavor the sound to your liking, if you want to add more bass, yeah, this is just a perfect palate to do so. Anything you do will only make it even better because the core audio is uniquely suited for attenuating without negative consequence.   • Audience 9.4 - Before you write off the late 80’s Eric Clapton, you REALLY need to look deeper for a minute. This performance, and this recording, clearly demonstrates the reason why one should examine the totality of an artist’s career, particularly if said artist was as prolific and talented as Mr. Clapton. The edgy, electrified sound of Clapton’s Cream days is gone and that is ok so long as you still get the TALENT, and many of Clapton’s performances (at least on tape) sometimes lacked the elements that you would have hoped for, despite his undeniable songwriting prowess…it was the PLAYING of the guitar, and the sound of said guitar, that we craved. Here, along with his pal Mark Knopfler, all of that is delivered and the audio quality does the whole thing justice because it is excellent. I think playing with Mark elevated Eric’s game. Hearing them do “Money For Nothing” together was cool, and Mark decided to sing in his own “bluesy” way in deference to Eric. Sweet! Eric Clapton feat. If you listen to this music without preconditions you realize it’s pretty good and if the man’s name was not Eric Clapton, you’d be thinking this guy should be much bigger.   • Audience 9.2 - Amazing atmosphere that the band completely catches and performs up to. The crowd is very responsive but does not intrude on the recording – even during clap-alongs which I normally hate but here is actually enhances the song!  Fantastic all the way around, and there’s plenty of headroom left in the recording so if you increase frequency (if you have an EQ) or volume you won’t destroy the integrity of the sound.   • Audience 8.4 - Not a high fidelity recording, sounding almost like an AM radio broadcast, but it gets a good sound review because it’s got clear guitar and bass (some tape hiss) and vocals are very clear. When a new tape pops up from such an early vintage you always immediately suspect it will be muddy crap so it’s a pleasant surprise to hear that it is decent. I like this show too, it’s a regular tour stop but the band is out to prove a point – and that point is that Led Zeppelin is not the only great English heavy rock band touring the States. I mean, this sounds like it could be officially released…not 100% perfect but I would not be as thrilled about it if it was perfect. I don’t need perfection, I need a good blend of excellent audio and nice atmosphere and this tape has that.   • Audience 8.5 - While some may say this recording is not technically that great, I beg to differ. Now, it is not super clear, but it is not muddy…it is not distant, it is not super dynamic but it still has guts and balls. I actually REALLY grooved to this, and the band is ferocious sounding. Hearing the fresh faced Vinnie Appice on drums for the first time with Sabbath and he’s really driving the beat, a different style to Bill Ward.  This one is a must have for anyone that calls themselves a Sabbath fan. It’s THAT important.   • Soundboard 8.8 - A less than perfect board tape as far as the overall timbre, and the mix itself. I found this tape to resemble maybe a really good AM broadcast, but perhaps that is too harsh!  It’s not bad, I just personally found it to be lacking some “punch”, although it is clear, it’s a board tape so there will be a built in appreciation for the “closeness” of the sounds.   • Audience 8.6-8.8 - A tape that begins inauspiciously as a pretty good but distant tape. Slowly, it begins to blossom into something much more intriguing. Taper smuggled very good equipment into the venue, that much is obvious, and he worked at getting into a better position during the show until what you end up with is a very tasty audience recording. Kudos to the taper!   • Audience 9.2 - What immediately strikes you about this recording is that Rick Wright’s synth sounds and effects are NOT window dressing! In fact, they are almost overwhelmingly loud at times during the concert. Now, what I like most about old recordings is when they reveal something to me I never knew – in this case I did not know or appreciate how much Rick’s work, however consequential during the song, was not mixed out or down by any stretch but you might think that judging on the myriad hundreds of tapes that exist that do not give you a true appreciation of the volume.  This tape is insistent, relentless, and thankfully clear and dynamic. The middle and upper midrange is sometimes almost too much but never does it distort. Get ready for a front row earschplittenloudenboomer! I get fine separation of instruments as well, hearing back up vocals, all guitars and drums in a good position and bass is there, not super defined and not boomy but there.   • Audience 8.9 - It’s amazing how tapes still pop up after so many years and sound like they were recorded yesterday. This is one such tape. The music also holds up, and since I never saw Elton John live I am still impressed with how much the guitar factors in to this show.  I enjoyed this performance and I felt the excitement of the crowd and felt totally transported which is the hallmark of a well-done recording. The sound envelopes you, it’s a completely immersive type of recording and will suck you in immediately. What a great find this is!
