Audience 8.8 - This show finally comes to light after decades and it’s surprisingly good. It’s extremely insistent and powerful sounding with guitars really up front and vocals thankfully pretty nicely mixed in as well. Radio Broadcasts 9.4/9.1 - Overall quality is excellent with a couple of these sounding a little dated but nevertheless the quality of the content combined with broadcast over the air quality (never mind how many decades ago) I think this holds up quite well. Various Sources 8.5/10 - So this is, as the title suggests, a collection of recordings made during this tour but the kicker is that the songs are all ones that were one-off’s (with a couple of exceptions). I found that even the worst track (the final track in the set) was not as bad as they made it seem in the liner notes. Still, when compared to some of the truly outstanding ones in the set, yes maybe it really paled in comparison but there’s only two “marginal” tracks here and they aren’t totally abhorrent. This was a very interesting listen for me personally. Audience 8.8 - This came as a total surprise as I never knew it existed…and man, I gotta tell ya this is f’kin AWESOME! This is a band that is crucial to the burgeoning British punk movement but they owe more to the MC5 than the Sex Pistols. This one off show features the band going under the moniker The Doomed because they have a certain Lemmy Kilmister on bass. What a high energy, totally wild and crazy fun gig too! Good sound quality, thankfully! Great setlist with a nice handful of covers that highlight their influences (they even do Silver Machine from Hawkwind!). Audience 8.7 - A rare tape of the 1974 tour, you gotta grab these whenever they appear because unfortunately there are precious few. This one does not disappoint in the quality dept. despite being pretty friggin’ loud and close to taper…almost crosses over the line pegging the meters into distortion but it doesn’t…it would have been a total loss if it had. Audience 8.5 - I would designate this recording as a reference recording – what was going on in 1973? That’s what this tape is, an old newspaper featuring a back story on this local band. Very dated…sound quality is marginal but not in a miserable, muddy, dogshit kind of way. It’s listenable and fun, like I said it is a good reference and may guide you towards other NYD tapes out there. I know I was certainly intrigued enough to seek out other recordings. Audience 8.2/Studio 9.5 - OK, what we have here is both a blessing and a curse. How to begin? It’s not the best sounding tape, but, it’s perhaps one of the most important and illuminating tapes to have surfaced in a long time. I’d been collecting Motley Crue for some time (because they have a special place in my early teenage years) and had always thought 1982 was the earliest known recordings. Should this even be in anyone’s collection? Considering the revelation it was to me, hearing them sound so confident and amazing as early as this, yes I think it belongs in every collection. It sounds pretty rough, but not rough enough to dismiss. A LOT of work went into the re-mastering to deliver something that started off unlistenable and now can be considered a “good” audience tape. Small club, loud AF band, sub-par taping gear. Why were tapers there recording at all? Who was Motley Crue in 1981? By the sound of it, they were already hot stuff on the scene. Radio Broadcast 8.8 - This is most definitely a broadcast although when it starts you may confuse it for a very good audience tape. The tape itself that was made from the broadcast is a little aged it seems but holds up pretty well. It’s a solid old tape, just could use a little brightening up. Audience 8.4 - Buried in a closet for decades this important document has finally surfaced. It’s, to my ears, slightly better than the next oldest live document which I believe is the Music Machine gig. The tape itself is not as bad as you’d imagine and that could be due to the diligent re-mastering that was done. The sound is not as murky and indecipherable as a lot of the other 1980 tapes. This can be appreciated, I mean, this is May of 1980 the band had yet to break open and even though they had a hardcore following, was not known outside of UK in any substantive sense. If you were a fan of Iron Maiden in these times, it’s akin to investing money in Google stock when it was first offered. Why would you? …maybe because you liked what they were doing and had a hunch. Audience 9.4 - A fantastic, close, precise recording that really drives that funk right through the speakers. A crackling, red hot energy that taper captures admirably, I mean, it sounds like he is sitting right directly in front of the band with microphones up and the band is only too happy to oblige.
