  • Soundboard 9.7 - I give this a stellar and glowing review and consider it an absolute must have for any self-respecting ACDC….no, wait, any self-respecting rock music fan. Why?  Because, even though the old tape has an occasional drop out (rarely), it is so fucking electrifying, exciting, and pure that you can’t help but bang your head to it…the entire show!  The combination of the superb live mix that maintains 100% live energy, there’s no mixing the life out of this bad boy, and the amazing performance all contribute to must have status. I love how I can hear Malcolm so distinctly, and even the bass notes come through…but the drums, that insistent rat a tat snare just makes this tape a winner bar-none. The bonus concert on disc two is also a board tape, and it has a different feel to it but it is also amazing. Get it man!

  • Soundboard 8.8 - OK, so yeah this board tape is extremely clear but it suffers from the sterility of most board tapes, and when the band is ACDC, you really need that electric atmosphere a rowdy audience provides. I also found this tape kind of missing some “guts”, but, if you want to hear everything, all guitars and drums, vocals (including backing vocals), then you can’t miss with a clean board tape that allows everything to be present.   • Audience 8.8 - At first my thought was that this was a recording for a broadcast because even though it sounds like an audience recording, that may just mean that the station used room mics to capture the concert. What tipped me off to the fact that this is indeed just a really good audience tape is the clapping near the mic after the songs.   • Soundboard 9.9 - This nearly brought me to tears. I always knew this band could reach the highest level of quality, in performance, in tone, in showmanship, and here it is. Yeah, sure, I know what you are thinking: “it’s mid 80’s Aerosmith, it’s the doldrums of rock, it’s a washed up bunch of druggies” but I have to tell you that if this marks a “comeback” then it’s the most amazing comeback I have ever heard. I’ve heard tons of live Aerosmith and I take this show over ALL of them.   • Audience 8.4 - They should call this tape “Noise In The Attic” ha ha! Actually, I am being very tough here, it’s a bright tape, it favors high end but is not too screechy…I just need more low end personally. That being said – vocals are in the front here, followed by Joe Perry, so that is crucial to this being a worthwhile listen. Taper has to hide his gear once or twice, so you occasionally hear the inside of his coat. Not too many 1975 period tapes out there, I am thankful for this one…you will be too, especially when the coast is clear and taper brings the mic back out (makes for a really refreshing audio moment!).   • Audience 8.7 - It’s difficult to express sometimes to people who maybe did not start collecting until the digital age what it is like for us old cats to be listening again to a recording we first heard on cassette…and could barely listen to they were so awful, muddy, gen’d down, etc. – and now they show up like maidens to the prom. This old recording sounds like years of mud and grime were wiped away, still not great but man what a difference! The bonus tracks from Anaheim got the same treatment but the original tape was recorded from further back so is not as good as the Detroit, but historically seems more important being that it is with Jeff Beck.   • Audience 8.4 - What saves the recording is the fact that it is clear, like virtually no muddiness, although the sound mix itself lacks definition except for Steven and Joe who are like rays of light peering through your window. The drums are good too, all in all it is hard to say this is not a necessity, it may not be but it’s very interesting and certainly of good enough quality to keep you engaged.   • Audience 8.6 - This is just fascinating. They could have easily billed this show as “The Aerosmith Blues Band” or something because they really were all about playing gritty blues and rock. The guitar work is cleaner and very articulate, it’s quite a revelation to hear them when they were really so conscience of the music, the notes, and not the glam.  I was impressed with the sound quality too, this is a certain keeper!   • Audience 8.5 - A really fine document of a superb time for the band…young, hungry, full of spit and vinegar and quite frankly at the top of their game. The playing is transcendental, a band completely in sync with each other. The tape is noise free, and while most of the time it sounds a touch on the dull side, it does brighten up and you know it’s probably because the taper got bold and moved closer to the stage.   • Philadelphia 1983 Audience 8.8 - This tape is very “live” sounding, especially the drums which seem to cascade around your head with Tyler being just slightly above the fray although the enunciation is not that great. Guitars are somewhat in back of things, so really on this tape it’s Tyler and Kramer leading the way in the mix. The good thing about this tape is that it is sharp and clear, the separation of instruments is not so much but at least it’s not muddy. I think Tyler is performing as well as he was capable…take it for what it’s worth but he’s good on this night. Ventura 1983 Audience 9.0 - A really good tape that captures quite the disaster of a gig…poor o’l Steven Tyler – lost his stage mate and now has to carry the weight on his own and man…slow motion train wreck on this night. I think this show is the musical equivalent of rubbernecking ‘cause you just can’t turn away you are drawn like a moth to the flame to hear Tyler royally butcher a rock and roll show.   • Audience 8.2 - A scrappy document, immersed in the audience, band playing a large hall…but thankfully I can hear everything. Not much clarity when they are at full swing but I would say this tape still has its charms and collectors, if they don’t have it, may want to add it to the collection. Incidentally the band returned again to play Philly later the same year, and that show exists and is pretty decent sounding. Ah the old days! Band debuts "Get It Up" here, a whip-cracker of a tune...In fact that whole Draw The Line album rocks. People slag on it, but that "first side" is pure rock and roll genius, just has a flow and the rest is good too. If that LP came out today, people would shit their pants in joy. But I digress...this show is from the taper and solid quality. This is the show where Tyler and Perry got hit with an M-80 as they returned for the encore, so alas, there is no encore. But we also do not hear any fireworks blast as the tape simply shuts off after the Train Kept A Rollin'/Get The Lead Out jam. The band would return to the same venue just weeks later.

Quite frankly, Yngwie era Alcatrazz blows away the Vai period by miles, and I am not an Yngwie geek either. It’s just he’s that good here.

  • Audience 8.6 -A sonic blast not held back by some of the typical limitations such as the actual venue itself which is notorious for sounding more like a gymnasium than a concert hall. Tape cannot be faulted for being muddy, it’s not very clean, but that is due to proximity to PA and unprofessional gear. That being said, the tape scores high in terms of sheer electricity and fun…once your ears adjust, yeah, but what a ride!  Band did not know they were being taped by someone so I guess this is a pretty honest performance. They sound very primitive, underground, gritty…and I guess that is why Cooper made changes because perhaps that style and sound was getting outdated on such a large caliber tour. Personally, I much prefer this honest, maybe if a bit more crude, band sound.   • Studio Quality 8.9 - The quality is great but you have to get past the first song and a half as there is some static present. Once you move past those tracks you get some very interesting studio rehearsals and outtakes. I love the rawness here, it’s very visceral and powerful.   • Audience 8.8 - This rates highly as a new audio tape discovery from decades ago you might have low expectations but it’s a good, clear (but for Alice being a little low in the mix) and I would say powerful show in sound and performance.   • FM Broadcast 8.8 - A tape that sounds…1978. That doesn’t mean it’s bad at all, it’s just a rather dated sounding broadcast to my ears. That means it kind of captures the time period rather well, and the quality itself is pretty good, but not exhibiting the usual dynamic of an FM broadcast. Not enough 1978 era tapes of excellent quality though, so grab this one.   • Soundboard 8.8 - A very old sounding tape that received a recent “facelift” giving it some more punch while reducing tape noise (without compromising any high end). What you end up with is another very good early performance (whilst the band was still doing some Pretties For You numbers) in very good quality. I never get tired of the early Alice Cooper stuff, even if I still don’t understand “Sun Arise” ha ha!   • Soundboard 9.2 - A lot of free form jamming here, what they call Mountain Jam is really made up of some improvisation before the band goes off into this more structured jam, and the show is a little condensed but sounds like it is much longer than it actually is.   • Soundboard 9.3 - This is a rough and tumble sort of board tape. Obviously never meant to be used in any official release, but it does certainly get the job done regardless. Very definitive instrument separation so you can concentrate on any instrument you want and you will get maximum information out of it – until you choose another one and then you will get stuck on that one.   • Chicago 1971 FM Radio broadcast 8.9 - Some generation loss and general passing of time has degraded the sound slightly but this version received a “freshening” which helps a lot. So, it’s a bona fide solid addition to anyone’s collection. Memphis 1971 Audience 8.3 - I had the luxury of being able to hear this tape before it was remastered and that would be the only way you can really appreciate how that simply removed what sounded like a layer of muck and grime, and revealed a shimmering sound that leapt out of the speakers… I am talking of course about Duane’s guitar. So, if you want to appreciate again what the guitar playing of Duane Allman was really all about then this recording will still cause shivers down your spine. Is it a great recording?  Not really, but there’s something here that still pulls you in (mainly it’s Duane). Austin 1971 Soundboard 9.0 - A tape that, while incomplete (some songs fade in and fade out, mainly the first and last) still has to be carefully considered when examining the few remaining live recordings featuring Duane.   • Soundboard 9.1 - Fantastic! I’ve always known there was something recorded at the famous Whiskey-A-Go-Go by the band but had never run across it until now. It’s a nice and relaxed show with great guitar interplay (as usual) and tight backing (listen to Berry’s bass solo it’s on point).
