Audience 9.7 - It takes the soundman a little while to dial it in, I mean, there's a lot going on so give him a break! Once he gets his mix right, it's off to the raises and one heck of a winning ticket. This is one of the best, Alan White has never been as fluid, even with the extended and complex jamming he's on every beat like a beastmaster. Steve Howe is in excellent form, in fact they all are...amazing! Audience 9.4 - This is a killer! First, it’s new to circulation and second, it’s fantastic sounding. Taper was right in the sweet spot with excellent gear, got the whole show…and yup, it’s a wonderful performance so this one checks all the boxes. Yes Long Beach Arena Long Beach, CA. Audience 9.5 - Outstanding, dynamic, and super clear recording that takes you right back to this night, in fact this tape probably sounds better than what you would have heard in your seats at the gig. Yes Long Beach Arena Long Beach, CA May 26, 1979 Disc 1 01 Siberian Khatru 02 Heart Of The Sunrise 03 Future Times - Rejoice 04 Circus Of Heaven THE BIG MEDLEY 05 Time And A Word 06 Long Distance Runaround 07 Survival 08 The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus) 09 Perpetual Change 10 Soon 11 The Clap Disc 2 12 And You And I 13 Starship Trooper 14 Rick Wakeman Solo 15 Awaken 16 Tour Song (Long Beach) 17 I've Seen All Good People 18 Roundabout -
Audience 9.5 - Brilliant recording in every respect, and one that I dare say rivals a lot of board tapes in dynamics and presence (definitely beats most boards in the presence dept.). Is that heresy? I don’t care if it is, I would take a tape like this over a board tape every time. Audience 8.8 - This is a very good audience tape. It is very clear, with great separation of instruments. It is not terribly dynamic though, but it's also not sluggish there either - it sort of sits in the midrange of things but in a way that is not too bad on the ears. I enjoyed this performance, I liked the atmosphere of the gig, and the respectful audience. Audience 8.7 - A recording that, while it does not open up to reveal a heck of a lot of depth, it is clear and present, with thump and some big arena bombast. The vocals do not appear up front in the mix, and low end is not highly defined although very present in a "feel" sense, the entirety of the sound can be roundly enjoyed though, as the relative clarity and presence of the band give this old tape credibility in the collector world. New York - Audience 8.8 - This is a good tape for the vintage, even if the tapers are sometimes talkative they are at least not shouters and nor are those around them. San Bernadino - Audience 9.2 - A surprisingly clear tape, you can tell right away it is a master tape source. The quality of this capture is appreciated very much, it really gives one a sense of what was beginning to happen in the States for Yes. I sometimes just can't believe there was a time when this kind of adventurous, demanding music was so well received and consumed by the American public. FM Broadcast 8.9 - This recording was done from the radio broadcast even though most people think it is from the reels (it is from a reel to reel, but a recording made from the broadcast). However, once the live over the air sound mix is sorted out, it becomes pretty darn good and even if the tape has some signs of age, it’s a great document and well worth getting. Radio and TV Broadcast 8.7-9.7 - Thankfully most of this material falls into the high 9’s in terms of audio quality but the compilation wins high points for presenting a chronological look into the bands broadcasts on TV in 1969. Audience 8.8 - This is a tape that does improve as it goes ultimately coming to a comfortable place, and one might say it is warm and well balanced. When I hear this I can better appreciate this period of the band, when they were experimenting with their music trying to find a place in the changing world of FM radio and top 40. Does that make it bad? I used to shake my head, but now I understand it, and I find that what they were doing was NEEDED in order to prevent ALL music from that time period sucking so much. Audience 9.2 - All three shows are recorded with high end gear, with a respectful audience – and the results are decidedly excellent. Pro Recording 9.1 - The engineers for this live recording opted to not close mic so you have a live recording with lots of atmosphere and probably sounding truer to the actual event than a pure soundboard. The bass is well recorded here, normally you’d expect the sound mix to favor only guitar as that is what the fans are wanting most – but here the mix is rather democratic. Good job!
